This week the local news ran an article claiming cops were “stopping pro-active policing of illegal raves”. I thought this was too good to be true (particularly if the cops were prepared to let the press realise this) so thought I’d delve a bit deeper..
This is from an official Suffolk Police Authority document (its on the web if you can be bothered to look for it) which sets out the proposed efficiency savings..
but if you look at the actual planned budget cut (in the middle of that list) its a mere 18% of the actual anti-rave budget, which is over £160,000!
So the big question is – WTF happened in this county to make the cops feel justified in spending so much money on stopping unlicensed raves? (it looks like they have even prepared for such incidents such as “riots” at least in cash terms…)
but even a personal vendetta by one or more cops against the rave scene can’t usually get cold hard cash funding of that sort of level ; and no other place I’ve lived in has had cops that put that much money and effort into anti-rave ops…
not even Thames Valley which is supposed to be a harsh area.
have ravers in Suffolk now got such a bad name and image that the rest of the wider community feels justified in paying their council tax towards these clampdowns?
Don’t know really. Haven’t been for a while. Most people know not to do a party here anyway as they always get busted.
TBH for me its some of the other stuff they are axing from the budget which raises my eyebrows [vulnerable adults protection comm, insurance, youth offending team etc] Some of those cuts will really hurt the organisations relying on them
160,000 / 52 = 3077 per week [ probably less than 12 people per week working on it…likely in at least 2 shifts and this makes no allowance whatsoever for drafting in other officers…]
IMO they should divert the anti-rave budget to the Youth Offfending Team – especially as there is a big problem with disaffected youth committing crime (perhaps fuelled by a lack of more positive ways to spend their time such as a local music/arts culture?)
I don’t think they put that much resources into monitoring (as thats what they were planning to cut back), in summer there were instances of cops actually staking out likely rave venues at weekends (I think this is the “proactive” policing that is being cut)
I doubt that there are many as 12 people; probably a smaller team of constables and civilian intelligence-gatherers (to read the websites etc) headed by a Detective Sargeant – probably linked with the anti-social behaviour monitoring team.
Most raves here are or were only visited by cops due to locals’ complaints of noise or damage. Suffolk certainly manages to deploy large numbers of TSG units to shut down raves with “all necessary force” and there seems to be little murmur about how much this is all costing…
I suspect the large budget is to pay for these operations of large-ish raids involving 30 or 40 officers which has actually quite succesfully scared away crews from Suffolk.
OTOH I think the damage these incidents cause to community relations probably results in local youths losing any respect for the police and wider society they may have had – and a knock on effect of greater youth offending and anti-social behaviour…
wud think that money wud b beter spent on providin sutable party spots
true, but this areas got a reputation for everyone being fucking stubborn so no one wants to back down, neither police nor ravers..
yer tis a shame, oooooo well raaa :bounce_fl :groucho:
