  • this is painful to announce, but Generic (Devon crew) have decided to hold a party in a bumker that if full up with aspestos.

if you are thinking of going, DON’T

what the fuck are you thinking of?

    dust masks at the ready.

    oldskool………………….

it will take more than masks; you would need the full on Altern-8 style CBRN PPE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Personal Protective Equipment). Strangely enough I was reading an article on asbestos in the New Scientist at the weekend – the Canadians who produce the bulk of it claim the white stuff (most commonly found) is the “safest” – OTOH the quickest way to spread the particles is to smash the boards up, and knowing what happens in free parties someone is gonna try 🙁

Can’t people just think beyond the weekend though? I know it would be a wicked venue but there are lots of reasons not to use these places!

The Royal Observer Corps who used to use the bunkers got stood down in 1992 and disbanded in 1994; most of the facilities were decomissioned by then and have been empty ever since.

Yet only a handful have been partied over the years; and the locations are well known to the old bill and other blue light services! the bigger ones would have served as backup comms centres and control rooms in time of emergency and although the bulk are now in private hands, some are still earmarked for that use if need be.

Which ones? Well that info is usually classified at least “restricted” so you only may find out when you ecounter MOD-plod who may not be particularly friendly in the current climate!

There are lots of websites on these bunkers; on these sites they specifically warn against entering them witnout a guide due to danger from asbestos, other contamination, dangerous structures etc). There have been fatalities; and this is amongst relatively sober urban explorers rather than munted ravers.

the quickest way to spread the particles is to smash the boards up [/B]

the poltimore bunker has been so badly vandalsied that the asbestos is lying around in big dusty piles:( !

I went out last night just to warn some of the partty-goers and spoke to the crew as well. worryingly, they said that they had “swept up”. obviously, this would have just disturbed the fibres even more.

What makes me annoyed is that, at present, Devon and Cornwall OB are ok about parties. I’m sure that this in in part because crews generally use ‘safe’ sites. I know that we always have safety equipment (fire extinguishers etc) and a (homeopathic) first aider on hand in case there are problems…. although we are limited in the emergencies we could deal with, we make some effort.

I’m worried that this choice of site and the attitude behind it is what will cause a harsher attitude from the cops in the future.

Really stupidly, there are several parts of the bunker that would be safe and asbestos free to use!!! 😡

I’ve had a look on one of those “guide to bunkers” sites and you can clearly see the bits of plaster all over the place. Although asbestos isn’t specifically mentioned on the site, it was commonly added to plaster, used for building insulation and can be found in most UK buildings from the 1920s to the 1980s (when builders finally decided to stop using it.)

D’OH! – why did they not use the safe bits and barricade the rest?

I hope the building wasn’t trashed either, as there are a lot of people about who would call the old bill and complain about this as they wanted it to either become a cold war museum or for some stuff to be recovered from it to be transferred to other bunkers which have been preserved.

That said I wouldn’t mind in future years doing a (licensed?) party in a bunker which had been made safe – and even maybe re-using the comms infrastructure (like the antenna mast or any BT pairs available) to stream video and sound of the party to the net and “link up” with another bunker party somewhere in the ex-USSR – to me that would be a brilliant way of people moving on from their past mistrust and hostility..

1)It might not be on the site, but there are clear signs inside the building warning “past this point etc”

    2) it was trashed and burnt out years ago 🙁

    3) that is a most excellent idea… bringing us closer to our european cousins and the decendants of our decendants “enemies” 😎

I’ve just moved to Devon, must be some free parties down here, yeah? can anyone help me, i need to go out!

not a free party, but free-entry for the night in a decent little underground club. And we organise free parties. 😉

    see you there?

If it is this weekend i cant as i am going back up to london. I cant look at certain threads on this site from work so cant look up that link – it stops me for some reason. you organise parties as well then? anything big Christmas/NYE?

if you cannot access threads please if possible let us know what is happening..

i.e – what messages appear on the screen, are they

    – a standard “404” page not found message
    – a blank page (some filter software replaces adverts with blank spaces but also “false-triggers” on legit items) – a clue here is that an odd IP address on your internal network replaces the normal URL
    – or an explicit warning that the site is being blocked.

Bear in mind intermittent network problems can also cause this, there is even filtering software which does not always block sites but works out the “business need” to look at a site against available external bandwidth!

You might be able to see it earlier in the day but get a 404 error at peak times (often there is no indication given to the end user this has happened)

if possible please let us know what the filter software is. If you are uncomfortable with doing this from your work connection feel free to do it from home or a friends connection..

I am very unhappy though at the concept of selective threads of a message board being blocked out on content – particularly if no warning is given.

Its just a HOPROXY: ACCESS DENIED. from our company intranet police. it lets me into most areas but will actually prevent certain threads getting through. If I click on a link in my email saying i have a response to a posting it does not let me to it but i can get to it by going to the pv.com home page and find it from there.

Just a pain in the arse really.

a bit of investigation reveals that the filter used is the notorious “X-stop” software; which has been criticised since 1997 for abitrarily blocking perfectly innocent stuff!

And like most other filters it can also be customised by end users – for instance SJ wasn’t always blocked at work, nor dirtycircus, then one day it got blocked; this is IMO more worrying as it clearly shows that someone at the office has seen the site and taken exception to it…

It has prevented me even entering the site at all now but i have got in through contact international whcih seems to be working at the moment!

Notice you’re from Reading – I’m a Bracknell boy before i went travelling then moved to Devon.
