The DPA conference was by far the best drug policy conference I’ve attended, but the highlight for me was being reunited with my childhood best friend.
We grew up in a wealthy Southern suburb where drugs were a normal part of high school life, and she got addicted to meth shortly after attending college at a prestigious university. When I say addicted, I mean she couldn’t get out of bed without doing a line. For two years.
One day, for whatever reason, she stopped. She stopped on her own, without rehab, without prescription drugs – she stopped. She’s been clean for two years now, and I must say she looks fabulous.
My dear friend is an up-and-coming actress so I won’t say her name, but I am so proud of her. For everyone out there struggling, be it with nicotine, caffeine, sugar or cocaine, know that there is hope. And to my best friend, I love you dearly and look forward to having you in my life for many years to come.
