  • NB: This was the intial post made on the morning of the incident, before it became clear the explosions were caused by terrorist action,,

sounds more like the aftermath of an electrical or mechanical fault than terrorism TBH, (high voltage equipment/substations used to power Tube can go bang like this if it fails!) although understandably no ones taking any chances

and there is extremely severe disruption to the London transport network

    Tube warning after ‘bang’ heard
Emergency services have been called to London’s Liverpool Street Underground station after reports of an explosion. The incident has caused major disruption to the entire network with stations across the capital closed.

British Transport Police said there were “walking wounded” but one person’s life was reported to be “at risk”.

London Fire Brigade said four crews were at the scene and more were on their way. A power failure could be the cause, Transport for London said.

A British Transport Police spokesman said that emergency services were dealing with reports of an explosion at 0849 BST on the Metropolitan Line between Liverpool Street and Aldgate.

One passenger, who had left the Tube at Fenchurch Street Station, and walked to Aldgate East, told BBC Five Live that he saw injured people.

“As I walked through the bus station I could see people lying on the ground, black, as if they’d been covered in smoke. There were about three or four people on the floor being treated.”

    update:

a bus has now blown up

LU unions (whom I believe more than management) claim some of the explosions have been caused by IEDs [1]

although a power surge is equally possible (combined attack?) – some of the injuries and smoke blackening seem more like the aftermath of a substation flashover

The major incident protocol has now been declared in London

[1] Improvised explosive device – any bomb or projectile which is not a pre-manufactured round of ordnance

I’m not one for getting off on Paris having failed to win it’s olympic bid, but I recon chirac’s behind these blasts…

Here’s what CNN have to say…

LONDON, England (CNN) — A bus was ripped apart in an explosion in central London today and several blasts rocked the Tube network leaving dozens of people injured.

The Tube blasts at the height of the rush hour on Thursday were initially blamed on a power surge.

But amid the chaos eyewitnesses reported that a packed double decker bus in the Russell Square area had been severely damaged in a blast.

Union officials blamed the Tube blasts on a series of bombs, and Scotland Yard confirmed the bus explosion and said it was dealing with “multiple explosions” in London.

A second bus was reported to have been damaged in Tavistock Square.

Describing the Russell Square blast, eyewitness Belinda Seabrook told the UK Press Association she saw an explosion rip through the bus as it approached the Square.

“I was on the bus in front and heard an incredible bang, I turned round and half the double decker bus was in the air,” she said.

She said the bus was travelling from Euston to Russell Square and had been “packed” with people turned away from Tube stops.

Travellers emerged from underground tunnels covered in blood and soot. Scotland Yard declared the emergency a “major incident.”

Emergency services were called to London’s Liverpool Street Station after reports of an explosion shortly before 9 a.m.

A short while later, London Underground said there had been “another incident at Edgware Road” station in north west London.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We have just sent some resources out to the scene. We have sent a number of vehicles to Liverpool Street station.”

Police told the UK Press Association there were “walking wounded” and said paramedics had responded to one report of a person classed as “life at risk.”

“There are walking wounded, but that is as much as we know at the moment,” said the spokesman.

He confirmed that the incident took place on the Metropolitan Line between Aldgate and Liverpool Street and said the line has been evacuated. King’s Cross, Liverpool Street and Aldgate stations have also been cleared.

The incident caused major disruption to the entire network with stations across the capital being closed.

Passengers were told that all services were being suspended because of a power fault across the network.

A City of London Police spokesman said: “We have closed Liverpool Street station as well as Aldgate.

“We believe there was some sort of explosion. There are some walking wounded at Aldgate. “We are not sure of the scale of the incident. Reports are still coming in.”

so…massive terrorist attack on london, eh? i have to say, im releived. i mean, my mum and some mates are up there, but this fucking country has got away with far too much and its about time someone reminded us we aren’t untouchable, we cant just go off round the world killing people and fucking people over nonstop. i am sad for the people who have lost loved ones, but this is the reality of the world we have all helped create, and all this is is a wake up call.

There have been security alerts in Swindon now apparently.

3 police cars and 2 meat wagons full of old bill just came past my window at work, probably going to lock down the local station or to reinforce others.

my thoughts go out to anyone who’s got caught up in this, I’m sure most people know at least one person that lives in london. I don’t think you can really be relieved that this has happened the people that have been killed didn’t deserve to be involved.

This is terrible, but my real fear now is that our government could use this as an excuse to push through more “patriot act” style laws. That would be the worst irony….

innocent people die every day across the world, usually as a result of some injustice which is usually perpetuated in part by the UK. it a releif to see some balance in the destruction of society. i dont like it any more than anyone else, but i do think that if people are suffering then the suffering should be equally spread, so we all know whats going on. we cause this kind of damage thruout the world every day, so its only fair that we experience what we put out.

its a releif in the same way that 9/11 was, that we arent invincible, and we cant get away with being the cunts that we are.

no its not fair that innocent people die everyday but i don’t quite believe that it ‘evens things up’ if we kill a few more people in this country, i don’t think that makes anything better.

I understand what USE is saying (albeit in a slightly blunt way), we do cause this kind of violence accross the world each day. This kind of attack would have been hardly noticed if it had happened in Iraq.

The issue now is how we handle the aftermath – do we try and solve the causes of this horror, or do we just retaliate?

yeah, i can understand what he’s saying too and we should feel lucky that we do live in a society where we don’t have to face danger on a day to day basis. I’m just saying lets spare a thought for the people that have been involved, that could be one of your or mine relatives and its a bit insensitive to say your relieved they died.

if we could get our governments to acknowledge that their “war on terror” perpetuates violence and hatred and has been the catalyst for this event alongside our support of the iraq war and israel, then we could be on the road to peace. i would love for that to happen.

however with this country’s history of kneejerk patriotism in the public, and religious zeal coming from the prime minister, i sincerly doubt this will do anything to help the powers that be realise that in a lot of cases britain is the “baddie” and not the opposition, and merely strengthen their resolve to “fight the evil-doers”, as heard in mr blairs speech st 12 today.

it should make us think “why do these people hate us so much to bomb our civilians? what have we done to deserve this?” but instead the average reponse will inevitably be “those filty rag’eads, how dare they bomb britain! lets bomb em back to teh stone age! i told ya the iraq war was justified!”. just wait.

in the mean time, i am no christian, but i do beleive in “do unto others as you would have done unto you” we bomb other countries, we cant complain when we get bombed ourselves. the individuals that died didnt specifically deserve it, but they took the blow for a whole country that did.

I would not expect our current government to make the right (ethically) choices on this issue, but it will certainly wake up many people who before did not feel the need to be interested in “politics”.

OTOH, this kind of event polarises opinion – people will either want to solve the problem (and get called wussy hippies), or blow the hell out of the perpetrators (and get called warmongers)

Regardless of the morality of what happened today maybe it’s time we accept the hand we’ve had in creating the world we all live in today and started trying to make things better (G8 take note!). I can’t help wondering how much better our world would be if we spent our money on fighting disease, famine and poverty…
