it was i guess before the first lung transplant

I accept animal experimentation but feel it should be the absolute minimum and modern technology should be used to replace it whenever possible.
After all there is still human experimentation in the NHS, not Dr Frankenstein type stuff but experimental treatment.
incidentally during the 1990s there was a lot of totally unregulated animal experimentation being done on mice by MDMA producers (who wanted to check that they weren’t producing blatant poison..)
Hi General Lighting ,
I agree with you totally , i believe animal experiments should only be done for medical research and only if it is needed . I saw both sides of the story when i took on a security job for a week for some extra cash . My flat mate she put me onto it .
What she forgot to say is what they did there and that there was 250 protesters outside the gate . So i did my week on the gate , at first getting lots of abuse from the protesters and being spat at and stones thrown at me .
At night though the ALF would do a silent protest at the gate , and i ended up chatting to one guy who was kind of incharge . We had some good chats and i could see his point and he could see some of mine . At the end of the week they didnt abuse me at all and just called me mate .
What made me angry though was the morning they evicted the protesters off the site they had camped on . The police turned up and stood back while balifs in full riot gear went in for the eviction . They were dragging people down the road by their hair , i saw kicks and punches as well . Made me wanna jump the fence and beat the shit out of the balifs .
There is no excuse for treating people like that , they were just protesting . And yes i shouldnt have been spat at and had rocks thrown at me either , but these people are passionate about what they believe and to them i was the enemy .
After the eviction the ALF started fire bombing peoples houses and cars . They even dug up the body of a woman and held the body to ransom to the family , all because their family business supplied animal food to the site .
They lost alot of support after that , sad how they became all the thing that they probably hated . Just shows you hatred can make people into evil nutters .
I was glad to be out of there after that week , not something i’d ever do again !!!!!

I think with protests its a much bleaker situation.. they just get hijacked by folk with similar mindsets to the baillifs/cops (sometimes even more extremist views) what just want a fight, and good folk like yourself and many of the reasonable protestors all get caught up in the crossfire.. those incidents were recent, this shit has been going on since the 1970s..
I’m sorry to say there are a fair few “protestors” (mostly young men) what don’t hate the violence, they actually enjoy it. Many of them swap between various groups, drug dealing/criminal gangs and even right wing groups and footy hooligans (and vice versa), whoever is currently “winning” at the time! A old hippy woman was telling me about all this happening in the 1980s, lads who just wanted to make bombs etc and didn’t even care about animal rights turning up to one or two meetings and using the groups names to do stuff on their own…
There are a lot of conspiracy theories going round about them being feds/agents provocateurs but when I saw this going on in the environmental protest scene and squatting in the 1990s none of them were cops, they were just wannabe gangsters/bullies who latched onto alternative scenes as they thought the folk there were a “soft touch.” its annoying as they fucked up a lot of good communities and made people sceptical of the wider causes..
Hi general Lighting ,
Your right about that to as a Shogan on a K plate used to show up every thursday i think it was , a group of so called protesters would meet this man and brown envelopes were given to these man ( pay day i guess for rent-a-mob). Also some of the protesters were disgruntled ex-employees that had been given the sack . Like you say there are those out there that just wanna go for a fight .
However it was ALF members that carried out the things i mentioned before , they were well known . I guess maybe like you say they might have been influenced by some nutter .
As i said i saw both sides and it opened my eyes to such things , give me CND any day they were not violent 🙂 .
One woman was put in a safe and locked into it , then put down a shaft dug in the ground and cemented over ( this was ALF protester ) . I guess they knew the eviction was comming . It took three days to get her out , they had to pump oxygen down there to keep her alive . I admire her for the commitment she showed .
However a local radio station did manage to interview her , they must have done their home work on her . They asked her if she was asthmatic of which she said yes . They then asked her if she used an inhaler she said yes . To which they then asked her do you know inhalers were tested on animals first , what do you think about that ……she said no comment .
Also not all animal experiments are done just for human medic research etc . , some are done to cure diseases that kill animals to . I dont like it and doubt i’d be able to do experiments on animals but i can see it is needed . We all benefit from such things .
However the guy who i chatted to asked the manager of the site what experiments they did …..he said couldnt say . So he then asked well at least confirm no test for cosmetics are carried out here …….he wouldnt answer that either ….so whats that say to you ? .
Mad times , and an eye opener . I was happy that at least i got them to call me mate and that even at that time we were on different sides of the fences we could still get on . I drive past that place sometimes and its all quiet now , but i still wonder about the other people i worked with at that gate and those people that where on the other side of it .
