thats exactly what was the areas downfall (at least with regard to nightlife, music etc); the amount of bored disaffected middle class youths attracted a shit ton of crack and heroin dealers from London (which is only about 80 km away) and the fallout of addictions and violence prompted the clampdowns…
The population is quite diverse age wise in Ipswich although there are surrounding towns and villages that could quite rightly be referred to as retirement villages; in some of them the youngest people around are in their 40s….
Then again that can now be said for many North European towns these days; and TBH I don’t think things are much better elsewhere in England (many music venues in London have been closed).
Since the Conservatives were re-elected in 2010 Britain has increasingly slid into a dark place although its not unlike how things were around the late 80s/early 90s when the first waves of acid house parties (which exploited similar loopholes to the recent legal highs market) were crushed by a Tory government which had initially put up with the scene because “young entrepreneurs” were involved.
Yesterday we had an elected politician killed by an extremist for the first time in 26 years – if I hadn’t lived through shit times like this once already it would be easy for me to become overly despondent about the future…
