Some of you may already be well aware of this; but the standard wiring colours for 3-phase electricity distribution have changed in the UK and the rest of Europe including all new entrants.
Those of you who do licensed events or indoor events may soon be encountering the new colours in fixed wiring installations; or it may turn up in new stock of cables.

Be careful if you encounter areas with both colour codes in use: confusion can lead to some very nasty consequences (like 400V across equipment and fittings when you only expect 230V)
BTW if you do not understand what is mentioned in this paper you should not be poking around at a three-phase supply for your own and others safety!

This is IMPORTANT stuff for any of you out there using 3 phase with your gennys. Or maybe you do club nights with your system.
Noticed a big spool of three phase cable in the basement at work today (the sparkies are re-wiring some offices).
Had a quick look at the cable end – this was in the new colour scheme
get used to this scheme and its differences from the old one now – its a reality

I know from my work that the cable suppliers are selling out the old cables first(with the old coding) and then gradually the new coding will come in
you can still use the old cabels till the 1th of april 2004, after that date only newly coded cabels are allowed
it is mentioned before but I would like to repeat GL’s words:

Damn – I think Auntie have been told to close public access to what is actually an internal site; I do have a local copy of the paper on one of my machines but am wary to upload it here as its BBC copyright material; they can and sometimes do try and take civil action against people who copy their stuff.

just been checking the IEE site a bit more closely and it seems all EU countries are having to change their colours as the Brits pointed out that making all the phases the same colour causes confusion when you need to know about phase rotation (with motors etc) or for general circuit identification purposes
so this applies to all the EU nations including those who have “just joined” from Eastern Europe

its coming up to indoor party season – and whilst we do not condone abstracting (stealing) electricity (which is one reason that can be used to shut down a party) some of you may be doing club events, or building project studios (incidentally if you are doing this at home you may now need to clear any extensions to the premises wiring with Building Control at your local Council)
this also applies to single phase wiring now (the sort you would find in smaller buildings).
once again, if you are unsure of your capabilities or what you are dealing with then seek appropriate help, do not take chances. Just because people are skilled with audio equipment does not automatically mean they have knowledge of mains power installations, and there are always the temptations to cut corners or take risks to get a party off the ground, particularly an unlicensed one. Remember that its peoples lives at stake here..

Having just had to look this one up here’s a good link on the subject…
at my work we had to chuck out loadsa cable as its now illegal cos it was white/cream and it only had two wires inside, they now have! to be grey and have three maybe, i cant remember, what a pity tho, actually they put it into store, i bet the coppers worth a bit 😉
