Dolphin watchers given warnings
Cans of lager are among the items which have been thrown at a dolphin delighting crowds of people in a Cumbrian town.
The bottlenose dolphin has been attracting attention since it appeared in Maryport harbour a few weeks ago. Now posters are going up around the area to remind people they are a protected species and not to throw food or other items into the water.
They are also concerned someone could slip and fall into the water.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has teamed up with the RSPCA’s maritime division to put posters up around the area urging people to think of the dolphin’s welfare and warning them to take care.
Agency deputy station officer Elizabeth Dicken said items like pork pies, cans of lager and footballs had been thrown into the water.
Condition monitored
She said they were also concerned about the safety of people who might get too close to the edge.
She said: “We are saying go and observe it but don’t throw anything in the water or at the dolphin.
“Just enjoy watching it and don’t go over the barriers. It has been a good attraction for Maryport.”
The condition of the dolphin is being monitored to check it is all right.Story from BBC NEWS:

Cans of beer!? I dunno… some people!
In a related story a penguin turned up on Lowestoft beach on NYE. Not sure if this is a regular occourance for British beaches or not?? The poor fella was exhausted and police were apparently protecting the poor chap from anyone trying to get near him.
there are loads of “exotic” creatures which end up on UK beaches.
HM Coastguard, the Royal Navy and Defra CEFAS (Fisheries protection) have protocols for dealing with them.
Sadly many which end up too far towards shore do not survive because of pollution, but in most cases the govt agencies get vets to check them out and either return them to the sea, or sometimes arrange for them to be looked after in captivity at aquaria/zoos if they are rare and won’t make the return journey.
That’s handy for the little chapy then. Seeing as one of the few CEFAS laboratories would be a short walk up the beach for him.
dolphin now caught and released back into the sea..
Trapped dolphin freed from marina
A dolphin which had been trapped in Maryport Marina for almost a month has been set free by rescuers. Marine life experts were worried that Marra, a bottlenose dolphin, was losing weight and decided to drain the marina and capture the animal in a net.
Experts then took Marra far out to sea and released the animal on Monday.
An attempt to coax Marra out into open waters using specialist equipment failed last week.Tony Woodley, a spokesman for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue group, said the rescue was launched over concerns about the dolphin’s skin which had been bleached by salt water.
^^ there is a mistake in that report, it is of course fresh water which attacks the dolphins skin!
