I started smoking cigarettes in 1988 (in part due to the influence of my late father who smoked for a great deal of his life, but also around the same age I think seasons is now because of exams etc). In Malaysia there is a joke that “Chinese boys are born with a cigarette in one hand and a camera in the other” which is not entirely untrue. Also in those days it was seen as cool and manly to smoke.
it was only in 2009 I suddenly thought “no more gaspers for me, they are too bloody expensive now and won’t do me any good and I can spend the money on other stuff like photography and AV equipment instead”.
A lot of my older friends from the electronics forums have had nasty health scares from smoking etc even though they have quit for some years, as they grew up in the 60s and 70s when everyone smoked (pipes as well as cigarettes, especially in coastal areas). pipes were usually smoked in the shed/workshop as those who had wives and children would get nagged at by the rest of their family for smoking it in the house, also tobacco was once sold in metal tins – these were hoarded and used to store small electronic components and screws, washers and nuts/bolts in (now you can buy cheap plastic boxes for this purpose).
