Thats exactly what I thought but I have been noticing since the government change the criminal justice system is clearly now trying to make an example of party drugs users and dealers as well as more addictive drugs, or simply are now making no distinction between the two and going by the classifications alone.

don’t forget the current British politicians are my age group and they grew up with the rave scene. its clearly true some of them did party for a bit even if they don’t want to admit it, but they stopped shortly after uni or near final years so they could get their grades and careers and not dishonour their families/connections. so now they are taking their revenge for having to work whilst others of our generation partied.

They are also clamping down really hard on anyone who hasn’t got a legit job (and wages/salary paid into a bank account, not mostly in cash) and is on any form of benefits and yet can afford not just drugs but things like music equipment, computers etc.

Also the feds can now pick apart every aspect of someones life by going through their facebook and forum posts and 99% of the time any detective who can use a computer themselves can do this, it doesn’t take a room full of boffins and hackers tactics any more.

certainly wouldn’t be a simple posession charge but a way bigger penalty compared to 5-10 years ago.

The ease of datagathering for pre-sentence reports does make a lot of difference. I’ve known people to walk free from court on a suspended sentence even with intent to supply far more because they are in permanent employment, often a small family run business and it would hurt many other people to send them to jail.

But everyone I know who is unemployed or not going to a university course with guaranteed job (i.e any liberal arts course as opposed to accountancy, engineering or agriculture) who has been caught with significant amounts here has had the prison door slam shut on them (even if its just a few months). Other folk have been shaken up by getting raided at 6am by cops with pistols and carbines and they were from a decent family in a posh area of rural Suffolk!

the message they seem to be trying to put across (cops and judges do actually realise they can’t turn the clock back even if politicians don’t) is that low level non problematic personal use (and even some sharing amongst friends) isn’t a big deal, but the moment someone looks like they are brazenly trying to make a full time career out of drug dealing (whether its illegal drugs or new RC’s) they will find some way to turn them over…
