in a country (the land of the free) where it is now legal for ant federally funded body (educational, social service, police, etc) to discriminate against itsโ employees based on gender, ethnicity orreligious practice.
way to go America. Civil Rights? donโt need โem:(
I personally had a very strange experience when I flew to Sydney in September 2002 on United airlines and stopped in Washington on my wayโฆ
Having to go through immigration even though we were in transit (apparently normal for the US, but still draconian as far as Iโm concerned!) and have a bags checked for radioactive and bomb making materials. Travellers of arab decent looking very obviously worried, a palpably tense atmosphere all around (they were on high alert with batteries of SAMs stationed in town). A police officer very aggresively threatening, his hand on his holster, to arrest some dutch travellers for smoking outside of the designated area after a confrontation with an american passengerโฆ
No matter how sorry I might have felt for them, and you could see hurt and desperate confusion in their eyes, I was dead glad (no pun!) to get out of there!
land of the free, home of the slave
Unfortunatelyโฆ
I think its becoming a full on jihad on both sides now โ if you do some research into those who are currently running the USA (dubya & co) you will find they are part of the โraptureโ Christian fundamentalist group; which believes that eternal salvation of (conservative) Christians will be gained after Judgement Day, before which they must โfight the good fightโ against their enemies (Muslims).
On the other side youโve got Usama Bin Laden and friends, who also believe in this religious war; what they lack in modern equipment and firepower they make up for in ingenuity and dedication. Al-Quaeda has basically achieved many of its combat objectives โ the whole world lives in fear of terrorism now, and people have had to alter their lifestyles in one way or another no matter where they live, whether they wanted to be a part of the conflict or not ๐
As for overturning the civil rights law, conservative americans have wanted to do that long before 9/11 etc.
When I first started using the internet I used to lurk on a lot of survivalist sites (not because I was in to the gung-ho stuff but they had good info on where to get mil surplus stuff that can be used for parties and squats) and it was obvious there are several militant conservative groups in the USA which wanted to revert the constitution to an earlier version which denied the franchise (right to vote) to non-whites and women. These groups dearly wanted some sort of crisis to happen so they could quietly bring in this sort of change to US society. It didnโt happen with the 1999/2000 millenium โbugโ; but the crumbling world trade centre in 2001 created a perfect smokescreenโฆ
Itโs not looking good for the world this century, is it!? ๐
Iโm glad I found the survivalist info; never know when it could be useful! I go by the philosophy that they canโt blow up everything and there is gonna be some place in England left standing โ weโve got a head start on many others with our knowledge of the countryside and resourcefulness โฆ. if party people could rise above the internal politics and group dynamics, and form a real community which existed outside weekend hedonism such a community could be virtually bomb-proof!

On a slightly more serious note, what the fuck can we do to stop the relentless collapse of our society into a consuming mass of people who replace life with things and action for passive โentertainmentโ?

well the only thing I can think off is keep doing free parties, underground art and alternative multimedia โ at least technology is advancing so quickly its becoming easier and easier (for instance all PCs sold now can edit digital video, only 5 years ago you needed a top of the range one to get enough processing power)
I worked in the TV industry for a few years as an engineer and saw it destroying itself; the crap on the screen now doesnโt get half as many viewers as it used to, most people are going on the internet instead or selecting their own content via DVDโs etc
it is admittedly difficult to โre-programmeโ people away from passive consumption of media though; for instance about 300 people check this board every day (mostly for the party listings) but only a few become regular posters โ (this may be because some people reading do not speak English as their first language; but post away anyway! It is not like college where you are marked for spelling and grammar here ๐ )
There is a trend on message boards for people to flock to the threads with the most conflict rather than the most co-operation (even on here this happens!) โ I think this is stirred up via โdebateโ shows on TV where confrontation is emphasised (one notorious one in the now defunct Central TV studioes regularly ended up in fights and the Police attending the studio!)
but I think with our kind of underground art and media once people realise that they can contribute as well as just passively watch it can encourage people to do things for themselves..
