  • can anyone help me here, I am putting on an outdoor party sometime in the next few weeks which I have to hire a soundsystem for. I am expecting between 100-150 people at this party, the clearing I will be holding it in is quite big, probably about 30m2. What size of soundsystem would be adequate for this party? I dont want to ask the hire guy for his advice since it would probably be a bad idea to tell him where it is going to be used.

A good 5k-7k rig should be adequate for 100 or so people.

I say ‘good’ because watts aren’t necassarily the ideal measurement of a rig. It’s all about the efficiency of the amps, cabs, drivers to turn that raw power into moving air.

That’s why you seem some small rigs cain the arse of massive monsters of a rig.

But yeah…. a good 7k should do you nicely.

I don’t want to put a downer on things but you should consider that if a hire rig gets confiscated you may find yourselves paying the hire charges for every day that it’s impounded. It’s fairly rare that this happens mind you, but it’s happening more frequently for rigs to get taken these days.

cheers mate can you also tell me if one generator is adequate to provide enough power for this size of rig plus lights etc?

your genny will need to be of higher power than the rig, as you have to take into consideration the decks, lights and other sundries that need to be powered.

it’s also good practice to have a little surplas power, as this is more stable and less likely to damage your equipment.

the hire place should be able to advise on this

Globaloon is right, ask for an 8kva or above genny at the hire place. Make sure it’s diesel and they supply you with distribution and connections to match your power for you amps etc (usually 13amp 3 pin house type plugs)

Although the rig wont every be drawing the full rated power it’s still good practice to have spare power for whatever you might need.

Always get 1 genny if possible. Using two will mean you will have to link the earths on the generators and you will have to try and distribute the power evenly. Unless you are using the two generators to run COMPLETELY seperate stuff with no link of any kind.

nice one guys thank you very much!!
