Bush denies report of ‘trolling’ by NSA Bush denies report of 'trolling' by NSA
By Stephen Dinan and Charles Hurt
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Published May 12, 2006
President Bush yesterday said U.S. intelligence collection efforts are lawful and necessary to fight terrorism, as Capitol Hill lawmakers called for hearings into a report that the government has secretly obtained the phone-call records of millions of Americans.
"We're not mining or trolling through the personal lives of millions of innocent Americans. My efforts are focused on links to al Qaeda and their known affiliates," Mr. Bush said, responding to a USA Today report of a National Security Agency program.
The paper yesterday said that the NSA is collecting and analyzing the calling patterns of most telephone customers in the United States to try and track down terrorists, but does not collect names or other identifying information.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania Republican, said yesterday morning that he will call before his committee officials from the major telephone companies that are participating in the NSA effort.
Democrats blasted the Republican Congress for not more aggressively monitoring the administration's anti-terrorism activities.
"Shame on us for being so willing to rubber-stamp anything this administration does," said Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, Vermont Democrat. "We ought to fold our tents and steal away."
The program involves three major telephone companies: AT&T Corp., Verizon Communications Inc. and BellSouth Corp. The paper, citing anonymous sources, said the phone companies began turning over records after the September 11 terrorist attacks at the urging of the NSA.
One major company, Qwest, refused to participate despite strong pressure from the NSA, the paper reported. Qwest had concerns about the program's legality.
With the story boiling up yesterday morning, Mr. Bush responded personally, speaking for two minutes before leaving for a commencement address at a community college in Mississippi. He ignored a question about the nature of the program called to him by a reporter as he left the podium in the White House Diplomatic Reception Room.
The president never acknowledged the existence of the project, referring only to "new claims about other ways we are tracking down al Qaeda to prevent attacks on America."
But he said flatly that the United States is not listening to domestic calls without court approval and said Americans' privacy is "fiercely protected" by the government. He also pointedly noted that the United States has not been successfully attacked since the September 11 attack.
Mr. Bush is already facing criticism over the NSA's warrantless wiretapping program, which he says monitors U.S.-to-international calls of suspected terrorist affiliates.
Some House Democrats introduced a bill to require that every wiretap or attempt to gain records of Americans must be through a court-obtained warrant.
In the Senate, Mr. Specter, who has been sharply critical of the Bush administration's warrantless wiretapping program, said the reports raise fresh and serious concerns that he doubts will be adequately explained by administration officials.
"The committee will be having an additional hearing -- a fifth hearing -- on the subject," he said during a committee meeting yesterday. "We will be calling on AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, as well as others, to see some of the underlying facts that we can't find out from the Department of Justice or other administration officials."
They also warned that the new revelations will lead to larger problems for the confirmation of Mr. Bush's nominee for CIA director -- Gen. Michael V. Hayden -- who as NSA director was deeply involved in the wiretapping program.
"I believe we are on our way to a major constitutional confrontation on Fourth Amendment guarantees of unreasonable search and seizure," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat. "I think this is also going to present a growing impediment to the confirmation of General Hayden."
But White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said she doesn't see it derailing the nomination.
"The feedback has been positive, and we're full steam ahead on his nomination," she said.
Most Republicans on the Judiciary Committee -- while not disagreeing with their chairman -- cautioned that it was no time for political grandstanding and that the larger wiretapping program is imperative to the war on terror.
"This is nuts," Sen. Jon Kyl, Arizona Republican, said of Democratic complaints about the program. "We are in war. We have got to collect intelligence on the enemy, and you can't tell the enemy how you're going to do it."
Mr. Specter noted that the telephone companies have testified before the committee at least once before in hearings that led to the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which deals with the president's authority to wiretap foreign agents without a warrant.
"We're going to call on all those telephone companies to provide information to try to figure out exactly what is going on," he said.

FRANKIE BONES
Brooklyn 1973. New York's Frankie Bones not yet old enough to cross the street finds his way through the abandoned freight tracks at the end of his block to a flea market. It was there that this young boy became addicted to something that was later admired upon. "I'm a vinyl junky, I've been buying records every weekend since 1973. It didn't take me long to figure out that records were made for people who D.J., and I love to to turn people on to music". Soon the grafitti writer turned producer was propelled into the limelight and was receiving huge success via his partnership with Tommy Musto (Musto & Bones). With releases such as "Dangerous on the Dancefloor" and the album "The Future is Ours" the hoouse phenomenom was born. He soon began solo projects releasing an innovative series of 12"s on his Breakin' Bones imprint. At 5.30am on the 26th August, 1989 Frankie Bones walked on stage in front of 25,000 people. The event was called "Energy", and was to go down in history.
The Prodigy's Liam Howlett speaks of this time: "I was into Frankie Bones, he would really rip it up. I'd go out and get inspiration listening to him, come home and write music". Fuelled by this experience Frankie took it upon himself to start a scene in his native Brooklyn. The legendary "BonesBreaks" series and "Lonny Tunes" ep's on NU Groove started coming out. He started throwing small parties called "Stormrave". These parties exploded, going from just a handful of people to 5,000 people in a warehouse, on September 19th 1992. These parties gave many of todays most revered dj/producers their first taste: Sven Vath, Adam "X", Josh Wink, Richie Hawtin, Joey Beltram to name just a few. Frankie opened up the first specialist record store in New York; Groove Records in Brooklyn. Driven by his love for the underground he pioneered the East Coast scene.
Today, Frankie's store has changed name and moved location. Sonic Groove Records on Carmine St, Manhattan is the best specialist underground electronic music record shop in the USA if not the world. frankie is still looked upon as the "father of the East Coast rave scene": the innovator. He is the most sought after dj throughour North America and is regaining his rightful position in the UK scene: Grand maestro of the undergound. Now with his brother Adam "X" they have started one of the best futuristic electronic record labels, which is aptly namd after their store: Sonic Groove. Strivng to constantly push the boundaries of techno and house music, Frankie Bones is truly a living legend.

PHOTEK
PHOTEK
Photek Intro: Rupert Parkes, aka Photek, Special Forces, Studio Pressure and Aquarius, first became hooked on music at the birth of hip hop in the mid '80's with the first electro and rap tunes. This naturally evolved into an interest in jazz and inspired by John Coltrane he learned to play the saxophone. In 1989 pirate radio turned him onto the warehouse parties and underground clubs of the UK rave scene. Parkes first rave experience was at east Londons Telepathy in Marsh Gate lane where he saw Fabio and Jumpin'Jack Frost for the first time playing music that blew him away. A move to Ipswich marked the beginning of his music making in '92. Parkes began working at a record shop owned by Rob Solomon with whom he also began to record his first tracks. An early result was the 1992 jazz-inflicted hardcore track Sensation, recorded as Origination, which was picked up by Ray Keith, a friend of Solomon's, who was involved with Soho's Black Market Records and was influential in the rave scene at the time. The following year Parkes and Solomon released Make You Do Right / Out Of This World under the same name. As Studio Pressure Parkes recorded Jump for Certificate 18 Records as his first solo release.
A landmark moment came when Parkes found a new family in the form of Goldie and Metalheadz, His first Metalheadz release was Consciousness, Into the '90's and The Rain. After the Metalheadz releases Parkes felt it was time to start his own label and inprint.
In 1994 Photek Records was launched with a loan from the Prince of Wales Youth Business Trust. A series of legendary releases like The Watermargin and Rings around Saturn were soon to follow. By this point Parkes was established as one of the leading pioneers of the scene that was soon to be christened "Drum and Bass". The evolution of the scene saw different camps emerging creating a wide array of styles with Parkes making some notable contributions. As Aquarius, Parkes recorded a number of tracks for LTJ Bukem's Good Looking Records, including Drift To The Centre / Waveforms on Good Looking, 1995 and Dolphin Tune / Aquatic in 1996. It was around this time that Photek met long time friend and ally Peshay who had just released the incredible Protoge EP on Reinforced.
Photek was now an established artist and proceeded to land a publishing deal with Universal. The next few years saw him remix artists such as Attica Blues, Goldie, Roni Size,Therapy, Dr. Octagon and later Bjork, David Bowie, Everything But The Girl, Zero 7; at the same time the major labels became interested and in 1996 Photek signed to Virgin Records' subsidiary Science Records for a 5 album deal (his work is released by Astralwerks in America).
Parkes' first release on Science was The Hidden Camera EP in 1996 followed by Ni-Ten-Ichi-Rye and Modus Operandi in 1998. In the same year the latin future jazz Yendi accompanied the release of the album's title track as a single. As he was emerging, Parkes' subtle style led the media inadequately to proclaim him as the leader of a new 'intelligent' drum 'n' bass sound, after the raw energy of early jungle. By the time his work on Science had matured, his approach into a unique personalized style quite unlike anything else around. Despite its variety and diverse influences, Modus Operandi is coherent throughout; as with his thrifty instrumentation, the attention is mostly focused on Parkes' incredibly detailed drum programming. Many tracks such as The Hidden Camera and KJZ have a jazz feel, employing cyclic double bass and impressionistic chordal effects while the taut drum sounds fidget underneath. At the same time other tracks such as Aleph 1 and Minotaur illustrate the techno influence in their choice of sounds, while Smoke Rings and The Fifth Column are virtually all drums accompanied by textured soundscapes. Parkes' debut album was an in depth body of work that gave Parkes a place way beyond dance music. The following year's Form & Function collected together early singles and various remixes alongside two new tracks. With his economical, static approach and a high level of abstraction, Parkes has summed up the direction of, arguably, the most creative dance music of the '90s in the most eloquent form. His high production quality and brilliant drum sound and patters gave him the name 'Master of beats' a true legend.
When Parkes started working on his next album, Solaris, he looked back at the music that had inspired him when he first started making music. The Terminus EP was released followed by the single Mine to Give a collaboration with House legend Robert Owens. Mine To Give became a number 1 dance hit in the US and a club anthem around the world.
It came as no surprise when people in the film and TV industry wanted to collaborate with Parkes and a temporarily move to Los Angeles was inevitable. Parkes scored the martial arts film "Invincible", scored the hip hop tv series "Platinum", scored several chase scenes in "The Italian Job", scored music for the "Animatrix" etc etc.
Besides the film and TV work Parkes has decided to give priority to his own label again which has recently released several singles under his alias Special Forces and signed 2 new artists (see link Photek records). This summer Parkes started a new urban label; 51st State Entertainment on which he produces new talent (see link 51st State).
Between London, LA and many DJ tours, Parkes has built an infrastructure which enables him to work in the various fields he enjoys the most; scoring movies, producing other acts or making drum 'n' bass. Parkes' priority is to be creative and flexible being the visionary that he is.

Freq DJs
Mind the Gap DJs
Bringing their hugely inventive DJ set back to Glasgow following worldwide acclaim are German based duo Swayzak Soundsystem. They play a wide variety of styles from minimal house to industrial, bizarre 80's obscura via Detroit techno, electro, and heavy dub, and the odd italo classic.
Lopazz is another gem from the cult German label Get Physical who showcases his stunning live set in Scotland for the first time. Having been remixed by Luciano, Captain Commatose and Ricardo Villalobos amongst others, 'live' for Lopazz doesn't mean hiding behind a laptop, instead he utilises a drum machine, sampler, effects, keyboard and guitar to create something fresh and truly memorable.
Two nights for the price of one? It would be rude not to!

Institute Live – 4th June 06
The Institute for Electronic Artists return to Edinburgh with a new monthly live showcase free for all fans of new talent and electronica.
From 9pm at The Left Bank, Guthrie Street, you can catch the debut with four stunning artists, Ives, Operator, Dee Mond and Junior Lazarou.
Ives
Ives are Iain Foxwell and Brian Leslie. They have just completed their second release titled, 'Who Wants a Soul When You Got Image'. And at present, are gigging and promoting the new album. So far the reaction from gig-goers, the press and radio has been positive. The first review of the new album was given by the well-known Scottish publication Is This Music?. The review gave the album a rare 5 out of 5 rating. With the track 'M8' being featured on the cover CD.
Previously the band has had airplay for tracks, from both albums, on Radio 1 (Regional), Radio Scotland, Xfm Scotland and Radio Magnetic. They have been in session on Vic Galloways (Radio Scotland) Air Show. Featured and interviewed on Jim Gellatlys (Xfm) Beatscene. In addition one of the tracks from the first album was placed in Stuart McHughs (Radio Magnetic) top 20 for the year 2003.
Live highlights have included playing to a packed Soundhaus (Glasgow) on Mayday 05, headlining the Glasgow Barfly and playing the T Break showcase as King Tuts.
Operator
Having recently completed a showcase at the “Dialogues” festival with a series of Rune Grammofon artists, Operator continues to exude a lack of remorse in terrifying mortals with his sporadic and violent frequency assaults. You may have seen him perform electronic sets with Jamie Liddel (Warp Records), Mylo (Breastfed), Maurice Fulton (MU, Output records), Neil Landstrumm (Peacefrog, Scandinavia, Tresor), Beans (Anti Pop Consortium & Warp Records), Hexstatic (Ninja Tune) if not, live in the knowledge that your life will be meaningless and devoid of good looking people.
He’ll be following the release of his previous 2 records, “OS1.1” Benbecula Records 2004 and “Exemption Song” Scandinavia Records 2005, with a 12” on Glasgow’s Mighty Robot Recordings.

Junior Lazarou
a.k.a. DJ Mitchell became addicted to underground dance music in 1989 when he stumbled into an afterhours rave at Glastonbury (literally!).
He then progressed onto using vinyl on a regular basis as he got into smoking beats & dropping basslines.
By 1990 he found himself being asked to DJ on a regular basis at clubs, raves & outdoor parties. He continued to do so throughout the 90's, until a friend exposed him to the pleasures of HARDWARE, telling him to "try this". It was the infamous ROLAND 303 & 808! By 2000 he was a habitual user.
Finding himself jacking out tracks in a ghettotech style under the guise "ELECTRIC BLUE", he was soon playing on the same bill as the likes of DJ GODFATHER, JIM MASTERS, SAMUEL L SESSIONS, DJ FUNK, CJ BOLLAND, VALENTINO KANZYANI, MARCO BAILEY, SUBURBAN KNIGHT, CHRISTIAN VALERA, OLIVER HO, PEACE DIVISION & PERCY X.
In 2003 the purchase of more hardware led to the birth of JUNIOR LAZAROU, the b-st-rd son of Papa Lazarou (The League of Gentlemen).
Junior Lazarou's current sound draws together influences from the last three decades, as he samples punk, reggae, ska, disco, hip hop & electro, fusing them with techno, electrotek, tekfunk, tech-house, techpunk & acid , creating a twisted & jackin' funked up vibe on the dancefloors at clubs, events & festivals like DIGITAL, PILLBOX, ROTATION, MUSOTICA, PALGOWAN fest, MAWBRAY fest, KUBE, the UNIT, BLACKEDOUT, G8crashers, TECHMAS, REACT, K-OS SOCIALS.
His first release is on INTONATION recordings, and is titled "RIDE IT".

UK : East : Norfolk Hoodies Save Man in Park! From EDP24...
10 May 2006 06:25
When ambulance officer Rob Lawrence turned up to answer a 999 call and spotted a bunch of hoodie-wearing teenagers gathered around an unconsc-ious man, he feared the worst.
But instead of finding thugs intent on robbing the man, he was surprised to discover the lads had used their hoodies to keep him warm and that they were the ones who had called for help.
The public-spirited youths had even helped track down the ill man's family by putting the sim card from his mobile phone in one of their own to trace a home number.
Today all five of teenagers - Keiren Bloomfield, Oliver Edwards, Tim Feavyour, Craig Casey and Lloyd Palfrey - will get a commendation from the ambulance service for their efforts in helping the man in a Beccles park.
Mr Lawrence admitted he had jumped to conclusions about when he first found them at Derby Road park.
"I stereotyped the boys standing over the patient and prepared for a hostile situation - I thought it was a mugging in progress," he said.
"Once I got to the scene, I could immediately see the good the boys had done. Their assessment of the situation was spot on and allowed me to take over treatment.
"The part played by the boys in the delivery of patient care and their selfless approach and public spirit was superb."
The patient was stabilised, taken by ambulance to the James Paget Hospital, Gorleston, and later discharged.
Mr Lawrence said he had stayed in touch with the patient and his family and they too wished to express their gratitude for the kind actions of the boys.
