[The D’Alliance] Rosa Parks (1913-2005) [The D'Alliance] Rosa Parks (1913-2005)
I truly believe that there's a little bit of Rosa Parks in all Americans who have the courage to say enough is enough and stand up for what they believe in. -- New York Congressman Charles Rangel.
As America remembers the legacy of a civil rights icon, our national reflection should keep the following in mind: our government's War on Drugs ensures that a disproportionate number of African-Americans will call federal and state prisons "home" for a long time coming. Our national crusade to rid society of vice tears real human families apart in order to feed the pernicious, insatiable American appetite for the punishment of others.
Politicians gain sordid currency from the appearance of being "tough on crime," and they have little incentive to remedy those injustices placed before them. To wit, the 100-1 quantity ratio between powder cocaine and crack cocaine under federal sentencing law. Despite specific findings and recommendations by the United States Sentencing Commission that it is grossly unjust and in desperate need of reform, Congress and President Clinton specifically rebuked it in its entirety. It was the first time that Congress did not follow the recommendations of the Commission.
The state of California ups the penal ante with its notorious Three Strikes law, which mocks our constitutional prohibition against government administering cruel and unusual punishments. One need not have committed any violent crime in order to obtain a sentence of 25 years to life. It remains another political sacred cow that should be sent to the slaughterhouse.
Even for those of us disinclined toward broadly invoking the specter of racism, a rough appraisal of sentencing law and prison population statistics finds that it permeates our criminal justice system. That specific discriminatory intent cannot be hung around the necks of our so-called leaders makes them marginally less blameworthy, for they have all the notice necessary to prompt humane reform.
Today's African-Americans don't need permission to sit at the front of the incarceration bus, which is already teeming with people of all shades. Politicians, prosecutors and judges, listening to the roar of approval from an angst-ridden populace, are all too happy to underwrite their tickets to the human stockyards.
For some, enough will never be enough.

e:volve @ the planet nightclub, wolverhampton E:Volve is a collaboration of many soundsystems who have come together to create something new in a day where club culture has become stagnant. We have become bored of the same old DJs playing the same old commercial places month in month out. There is an abundant of new talent right on our own doorstep who can far outreach many established DJs capabilities. Unfortunately these new DJs have nowhere to play due to the "club" scene being sewn up by commercial money making machines. E:volve is a new evolution of music for music entrepreneurs. Where new DJs can play along some of the best underground DJs around. We believe in throwing a full on party, with top production values, Parties that we all want to remember. This is not just doing what we have to, but doing the most possible with our hearts fully set to create a purpose built futuristic land where Cybers, Fairies and Aliens can play along side DJs, Clubbers and general music lovers. With the up and coming change in the Licensing Laws - the 24 hour party people generation is about to truely take off. I think we are about to see a shift, an evolution, in the nocturnal habits of the average clubber, we are all going to evolve into a more civilised, less drink-focused, more European style of clubbing community. Gone will be the need to deck as many beers down in a short space of time and get home for 2am with a kebab. People are going to start their nights later, safe in the knowledge there isnt a tight deadline and that they can stay out as long as they want. Anyone reading this who has experienced clublife abroad ( ..and Ibiza does not count. - thats just UK clubbing with sun ) will know what I mean. This released pressure will mean that people will be more civil, more open, more fun! Like the intial raves of the 80`s and 90`s when peace love and happiness where a priority to a good night out and it wasnt about the price of Vodka and Redbull. The UK club scenes going to E:Volve - I can't wait :) Next event: Friday 28th of October 10-Late FREE FRESHERS PARTY!!!! free entry for students. £1 others music policy- hard dance/acid techno full uv decor and visuals djs include some of the best local talent plus special guests. [The D’Alliance] Add This One to Souder’s FBI File [The D'Alliance] Add This One to Souder's FBI File
The FBI is thinking about changing its restrictions on former drug use by job applicants so that fewer people are disqualified from joining the agency. FBI officials have said they're frustrated at having to turn down the best person for a particular job (even someone who has worked in the past for the CIA!) because they didn't meet the criterion of having used marijuana 15 or fewer times in the past.
This is an interesting development in and of itself, but on top of that it was the subject of an editorial and counterpoint in today's USA Today. The paper applauds the idea of doing away with the ban, noting the statistic that half of Americans have used pot at least once. I was really tickled by the line, "Minor recreational drug use by the young is simply a fact of life."
And then there's the opposing view, authored by everyone's favorite prohibitionist, Mark Souder. His main argument is that he finds it hard to believe the FBI is lacking for qualified applicants. Zing! Take that, Drug Legalization Conspiracy!
He tosses out numbers of FBI job applicants but says nothing about the fact that the FBI seems to be having trouble filling specialized positions such as intelligence analyst or linguist. Who cares if 100,000 people are applying for jobs as Russian translators if none of the eligible ones speak Russian?
Oh, and he also refers to past marijuana users as "repeat drug abusers."
When you look at his piece side-by-side with the relatively nuanced one from USA Today, Souder mainly comes off just looking cranky that anyone might consider common sense and effectiveness over dogma.

JOY present: DJ NIPPER, UK Exclusive, Friday 11th November @ Mission, Leeds JOY PRESENTS: DJ NIPPER UK EXCLUSIVE
FRIDAY 11TH NOVEMBER @ MISSION, LEEDS
Friday November 11th 2005 marks the date for the return of a legend. As a true pioneer of the dance music scene we are proud to present, a UK exclusive 3 hour set direct from Hong Kong by the legend that is DJ Nipper, in celebration of the last decade of house music with the largest of party atmospheres.
About the DJ’s,
DJ Nipper hails from Manchester, UK and started DJing in 1983 inspired by his love of Hip Hop an Electro-Funk.
In the latter half of the 1980’s, he was one of the pioneers of the Manchester House Music Scene along with Sasha, Laurent Garnier, Justin Robertson, Graeme Park, Mike Pickering, Steve Williams, 808 State DJs and Jon De Silva.
DJing at many clubs in the North-West including the Man Alive and The Hacienda and then onto DJing at clubs around the UK like Shelley’s, Hackett’s, Shadoo, Konspiracy, Thunderdome, Quadrant Park, Eclipse, Turnmills, Cream, Sterns Rain Dance, Spectrum, Perception, Energy and many more including the very first ARK in 1991.
Nipper was support DJ for Dance Bands such as…808 State, Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, Prodigy, N–Joi, Shades Of Rhythm, Dream Frequency, The Shamen, Bassheads, Evolution.
In 1991 he embarked on his recording career first releasing two tracks “Nightmare” and “Devastating Beat Creator” on Warp Records under the pseudonym “Kid Unknown” – the last track was voted number 3 in the Alltime Hardcore Chart in Muzik Magazine.
In 1995/1996 Nipper came up with an idea for a computer game enabling people to make music on the Sony Playstation based around Steinberg’s Cubase.
He was very concerned about being ripped off and so he decided his best option would be to have a meeting with Tony Wilson (Hacienda) and show him his idea. Tony Wilson thought it was a tremendous idea and said he would help Nipper and so Tony Wilson set him up with a meeting one morning at the Midland Hotel, Manchester with two top dudes from Sony.
They met, he showed them his idea and they were very impressed. So impressed, they decided to rip off his idea and do it themselves. It went on to be the best selling game for making music on the Sony Playstation and, all the other game consoles too.
Nipper designed, built and owned two recording studios in Manchester (1995 – 1999) and Liverpool (2000 – 2002).
Nipper set up LCD Records in 1998 with his partner Ian Bland (Dream Frequency) and released 9 singles including “Sanctuary” and “Do You Believe” as Dejure and “Heaven and Earth” as Red.
Recorded 2 tracks for Fluid Recordings UK: “6 Mile Hike” as DJ Nipper and “The Amulet” as Basilica.
In all Nipper has had to date: six top 75 UK hits.
More recently, nipper resides in Hong Kong where he has been successful in setting up the record label, “Sound Of China Recordings” specializing in progressive breaks which when coupled up with his amazing scratching/turntable ability really make his unique sound shine through. He is definitely one of the most technically advanced DJ’s on the circuit..
On his 2002 debut Album “Air Drawn Dagger”. DJ Sasha credited Nipper as one of his inspirational figures.
This event will be the only opportunity to experience this true legend in the UK.
DJ SY
He gained a residency in 1990 at the Nottingham club Venus.
It wasn’t long till his reputation was established as the 'Scratch master',
Sy's individual mixing ability has maintained his popularity and his legendary oldskool sets are still in high demand.
As well as DJing SY co-owns a studio in Aldershot, Hampshire, and in 1994 sucessfully formed his own record label, Quosh Records.
EWAN CAWOOD
Huddersfields finest, Ewan Cawood, will need no introduction to any Ark regular, his quality of mixing and the way he constructs his sets have always made him stand out from the rest. He became a resident at the legendary Ark at the back end of 1992.
More recently Ewan has been very successful in producing music for Channel 4 television.
STEVE LUIGI
Steve is The old man of JOY But you know what comes with age, EXPERIENCE!!
He has played at almost every JOY.
Professional DJ for 33 Years, Mixing/Dance DJ for over 15 Years. .
He was the resident and promoter at the infamous "Gallery" in Leeds, which was without a doubt one of the most successful clubs in the country around that time.
KELLS & TOTS
The name Kells&Tots and JOY have become synonymous, playing at every single JOY event to date, they have worked closely with all the DJ’s at JOY and earned great respect. The pair have enjoyed great success not only as DJ’s but also promoting their own events. The first of which was a string of illegal events, Area 51, The Mill, and co promoted a night called Hush. With their love for the sound of the legendary Ark (Leeds) the pair came up with “The Ultimate Anthem” (Bradford) and its harder edged sibling, JOY ( based in Leeds)
They have enjoyed guest slots in yorkshire, Manchester and the north east. Not forgetting their joint venture at the Leeds Love Parade helping host one of the 3000 capacity arenas
DALETHEDISC
Dale was an employee at happy house records (Bradford) in the early 1990’s, and then in 1995 he and a work colleague had the opportunity to buy the shop which at this point was in serious debt, they successfully transformed it into what is regarded today as one of the north’s leading dance vinyl specialist, The Disc (hence his DJ name) in 1993 Dale was part of the live pa S-CAPE and toured the north extensively, he also enjoyed promoting his own local rave which also ran in the early 1990’s
Dale’s input not only as a DJ but as a friend and confident has been invaluable.
SULLY
Sully, from Manchester was introduced to me by DJ Nipper. His unique sound really stood out. He has been involved in the dance scene since 1991 and has had guest slots across the north west including popular club events such as Life @ Bowlers, Manchester.
He has also promoted his own club night brand, “Not Forgotten” in Manchester.
CAINE BROWN
Caine is one of Joy’s new found talents, his mixing ability and music selection will help make him one of the DJ’s to watch in the future.
MC FOX
The original Mc from the infamous Gallery Leeds. He was never intended to be a resident but after his guest slot at last months Joy I cant resist putting him on. A true legend in his own right.
