Fucked up shit I dont know about anyone else who lives in dark cities, but does the criminality seem to be gettin way out of hand. I mean im just a surrey-bred (one of the lowest crime rates) who moved to bristol, but the shit i've seen and experienced is ludicrus. Back in dorking id been mugged a few times by the same group of people (who had knives), untill a concerned freind had the two blokes legs broken. no hassle since then. Ive been mugged in bristle once for my phone and got some bruised ribs for my trouble. Also two people have tried it on in newcastle but i sang at aload of chavs and they got freaked and ran (not befor i made em shake my hand) and another bloke i elbowed in the face. the first time since school ive hit anyone. To be fair i have massive hair and walk around like i know some secret (the secret of takin pleasure from everything ) plus im skinny and somehow everyone can tell where im from, so i am a likely target. still eight muggings attempted? im only twenty two.
from chillin in the dodgy bits of bristle ive seen some things that tell you there is organised crime and the police are involved. from the couple of smoke-easeez about that ive seen coppers come to take payment from, the hous e on city road that every week has eight coppers pull up in a van, two guard the entrance, they stay ten minuites, the leave and one has a bag. My mate lived next door and opposite, the whole time there was a man sellin crack out of coke cans onthe floor. once a bloke nearly ran over my mate outside a club, we weree all pissed and shouted at him, he got out the car and got a shotgun out of the boot and we legged it. i see that guy everywhere, talking to nearly every club, pub and cafe owner around. fuck knows. Most of the clubs the bouncers run the drugs buisness and dont even maintain any quality. i recon they just sell what they confiscate
Still, it wasnt getting to me untill about amonth ago. Me and my Girl are havin a spliff in the front room watchin blackadder, when there's a knock on the door. ciff goes to answer, and this bloke comes in and goes "we're here for the drugs boys". we let a mate of ours stay round during the summer, he was in a bit of a mess but was also selling most things from the house. i told him to do his buisness down the road and not to give out our addtress, but never happened. So initially i just think its a wind up and strart saying no one here sells, when two more blokes came in behind him in balaclava, one with a twelve inch kitchen knife,. Basicly they'd been given information that there was a coke dealer in the house and they were convinced it was me. so my first mission was to convince them that i wasnt, and that we were skint, with out them torturing us (which they were talkin about). that worked, coz we had no needles on the decks and the tv was a bit fucked. so they got one to take my mate **** down the cashpiont at knife piont (they all had at least one blade) and emptied his and my girls account. The main guy was reletively intelligent, gave us our weed and our phones back, and i got on alevel with him. the cash piont guy was like a fortyfive year old aisian taxi driver or summat, big bags under his eyes, didnt speak. the third guy was mental , he had his knife out the whole time and kept going on about fucked up shit he'd do to us if we were lying or grassed him up. he was only barely controlled by the main guy. luckily noone was hurt, they left.
but **** totally freaked out, couldnt sleep , was throwin up and shit for weeks. my girlfriend was the same. i kind of expected it, after the summer and seeing stuuf in st pauls n easton, but iwas still paranoid. **** made us move house. id just been kicked out of uni and lost my job, so im now back in fucking surrey. bollocks. i just had to get all this shit off my chest, cheers for readin any comments or questions would be well handy to get my head in shape. this why i havent been on the site much...
Health and Safety and risk assesment etc. found quality site at...http://www.bbc.org.uk/ohss/defaul~1.htm
basic health and safety outlines.
also seem to do good courses in these areas http://www.bbctraining.com/ for about £150 for a one day course. theres about two i want to do, event risk assessment and safe build and design of sets. thats threehundred, but i recon i can get the council or what ever to pay for it, especially as im part of the voluntary sector.
Defence against burglars – what about *this* situation? A hypothetical situation (but one that could easily happen in an urban setting)
I' d be particularly interested to see a response from any law students who may be reading here..
OK suppose a bunch of people had a large shared house... They were mostly in their 20s-30s, mixed group, who all attended raves and other parties, and did small amounts of recreational drugs at the weekend but worked or attended a place of education during the week.
As you would expect, they have between them got enough cash to buy a few PCs, telly, DVD player, decks, music gear decent hi-fi and other stuff.
Every weekend they tend to have a loud gathering of people playing music, on occasions the Police have attended and told them to turn down the noise.
One of them rather misguidedly invites a random bunch of people over after a party to chill out, amongst whom is a lad (Person A) known to the Police for both drug use, dealing and burglarys of dwellings. He is also a regular crack cocaine user.
Some of the housemates are a bit wary of him but "he's sorted us out before so he's alright", although there is one chap in the house with whom he's never got on with as they have always mistrusted one another.
This chap (person B) is from an ethnic minority, slightly shyer and more reserved than the others (although he has occasionally used drugs, and has one formal adult caution for posession from some years back, which scared him into cutting down his drug use drastically). He has no other dealings with the criminal justice system and no history of using violence.
He raves occasionally but spends more time making music on equipment he purchased but has been installed in a communal music room in the basement for the use of all in the house. B sometimes also plays cricket, and keeps his cricket kit in his room, although he only plays for fun as he is short-sighted.
After the chillout session, A departs and everyone retires to bed. B is having difficulty sleeping, due to earlier consumption of stimulants (he hasn't done that for a while, hence the greater effect)
A later returns and breaks into the house by an insecure door, with the intention of stealing some of the music equipment to sell for drugs.
B is awakened by the noise. He picks up his cricket bat, and goes downstairs without putting on his spectacles (which he earlier mislaid).
He rushes into the basement, sees a figure their and swings the cricket bat - only aiming at the moving figure and unsure due to his eyesight of where the bat may land. The bat fractures A's skull and he falls to the ground.
Meanwhile, a young lady (C) living in a room above hears the commotion and dials 999 on her mobile. The Police attend; an Ambulance is called but paramedics pronounce A's life extinct.
B is arrested on suspicion of murder and detained at the Police Station, to be interviewed later by CID. As he is very jumpy initially and the cops say "they are always having parties at that house" a force doctor suspects he has taken class A drugs, and pronounces "not fit to interview until effect of these drugs has worn off" (i.e 12 hours bang up in cells!)
Now you would think this is a clear-cut case of self-defence but...
when cops attended A hadn't managed to nick anything yet; all they saw was B with a cricket bat standing over A's body.
the girl who called 999 (C) (perhaps not realising the implications of this statement) says in passing "A and B never liked each other"
the house had a "reputation" as mentioned above for noisy parties.
although B has difficulty signing his custody form the cops think its because of drugs affecting his vision, not that he can't see the damn forms!
B was also worried previously that A was "cracking on" to C - although B and C are not in a relationship they were very good friends and B was always worried about C's welfare. She also tells the cops this..
B is not white. A is. B went to comprehensive school but did relatively well in studies, whilst A went to fee paying school but "went bad". It is a predominantly middle class white suburb in SE England where this incident happens.
Can anyone see the makings of a big miscarriage of justice here, despite our "englishmans home is his castle" laws?

UK : Wales/Cymru – Airwave mast wrecks local telly reception not surprising from a technical POV, airwave TX frequencies are very near the UHF TV band..
Quote:
TV disrupted by new police mast
Residents have called for compensation because their TV reception has been distorted by a new police radio mast at Holyhead on Anglesey.
Up to 200 people saw their TV pictures become fuzzy and blurred when the Tetra mast on top of the local police station was turned on in December.
The company which put up the mast, 02 Airwave, said it was completely legal.
The problem can be solved by a special filter or by switching to satellite or digital TV services.
Residents said that both of these solutions were unpopular because of the cost.
One local woman said she had been surprised by the problem.
"I feel they should have been more considerate and warned us," she said.
The interference can almost always be resolved by the fitting of an appropriate filter
Ofcom statement
"We just didn't expect it - I had no idea a mast could call all this problem."
Holyhead's mayor, independent councillor Jeff Evans, said he thought it was unfair that people had been inconvenienced.
"I consider it that morally wrong in that, through no choice of their own, no involvement of theirs, the public are now being denied access to previously excellent reception in that area," he said.
02 Airwave, which put up the mast, has said it was completely legal.
"The Airwave service mast installed on Holyhead police station is fully compliant with the operations under the Wireless Telegraphy Act and this has been confirmed by Ofcom to local people," a spokesman said.
No obligation
An spokesperson for the watchdog body Ofcom said the problem had probably occurred because viewers have had amplifiers fitted to their television installations in order to boost the signal.
"The interference can almost always be resolved by the fitting of an appropriate filter," added the spokesperson.
"[02] Airwave is transmitting in accordance with its licence and is under no obligation to fund the remedy."
The spokesperson also pointed out that no-one had a legal right to good television reception.
Tetra (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) is a digital mobile radio system which has been chosen by the Home Office for a new communications system for emergency services, including the police. The system has proved controversial across the UK because of health concerns
Mast heddlu, dim teledu? [1]
Quote:
Mast yn effeithio ar setiau teledu
Mae pobl yng nghanol Caergybi yn honni fod ansawdd y llun ar eu setiau teledu wedi gwaethygu ers i fast Tetra gael ei osod ar ben gorsaf heddlu'r dre.
Mae'r mast yn rhan o rwydwaith radio newydd fydd yn cael ei ddefnyddio gan y gwasanaethau brys drwy Brydain maes o law.
Dywedodd llefarydd ar ran 02 Airwave, y cwmni osododd y mast, eu bod yn cydymdeimlo â phobl y dref ond nad oedd y cwmni yn torri'r gyfraith.
A dywedodd Ofcom, y corff sy'n arolygu'r diwydiant cyfathrebu, na all fod o gymorth ar wahân i gynghori gwylwyr i osod teclyn arbennig ar yr erial
Mae'r mast Tetra yn un o rwydwaith o fastiau sy'n cael eu codi o amgylch Cymru.
Mae'r system newydd wedi creu dadlau oherwydd pryderon am y peryglon iechyd. Ond mewn rhai amgylchiadau gall hefyd effeithio ar y llun ar deledu.
Dechreuodd problemau trigolion Caergybi fis Rhagfyr eleni ac fe dalodd rhai pobl yn wreiddiol i beiriannydd i ddod i edrych ar eu setiau.
Yn y diwedd fe wnaethon nhw ddarganfod y gallai'r broblem gael ei datrys gyda ffilter arbennig neu drwy droi at loeren neu deledu digidol.
"Rhwng y 'Dolig a diwedd Ionawr dydw i ddim wedi cael dim llun o gwbwl bron iawn"
Trefor Lloyd Hughes
Ond roedd y trigolion yn dadlau fod hynny'n costio gormod ac na ddylen nhw orfod talu.
"Rhwng y 'Dolig a diwedd Ionawr dydw i ddim wedi cael dim llun o gwbwl bron iawn," meddai Trefor Lloyd Hughes sy'n byw tua 200 llath o swyddfa'r heddlu.
"Roeddwn i'n siarad gyda rhywun o gwmni O2 oedd yn dweud eu bod yn cadw o fewn y rheolau trosglwyddo.
"Ond y broblem yw ers i'r polyn fynd i fyny mae'n effeithio, nid dim ond arna i, ond ar bobl eraill ar y stryd ac o gwmpas Caergybi.
'Annheg'
"Beth sy'n fy mhryderu i yw fod rhai hen bobl yn gorfod talu i'w gael yn ôl.
"Dydw i ddim yn ei weld yn deg o gwbwl."
Dywedodd Jeff Evans, maer Caergybi a Chynghorydd Annibynnol, ei fod yntau hefyd yn credu fod y sefyllfa'n annheg.
"Mae'r mast a osodwyd ar orsaf heddlu Caergybi yn cydymffurfio'n llwyr gyda'r Ddeddf Darlledu ac mae Ofcom wedi cadarnhau hyn i'r bobol leol"
Llefarydd ar ran O2 Airwave
"Tra bod ganddyn nhw efallai yr hawl gyfreithlon i wneud hynny dwi'n credu ei fod yn anghywir yn foesol fod y cyhoedd, heb unrhyw fai arnyn nhw, yn awr yn colli signal oedd cynt yn wych yn yr ardal."
Dywedodd llefarydd ar ran 02 Airwave, y cwmni a osododd y mast, eu bod yn cydymdeimlo â phobl Caergybi ond nad oedd y cwmni yn torri'r gyfraith.
"Mae'r mast a osodwyd ar orsaf heddlu Caergybi yn cydymffurfio'n llwyr gyda'r Ddeddf Darlledu ac mae Ofcom wedi cadarnhau hyn i'r bobl leol," meddai llefarydd.
Mae Ofcom hefyd yn dweud na allan nhw fod o gymorth ar wahân i gynghori gwylwyr i osod ffilter ac y dylai hwnnw wella ansawdd y llun.
"Mae'n debyg fod y broblem wedi digwydd gan fod y gwylwyr wedi cysylltu offer i'w teledu i hybu'r signal gan eu bod yn byw mewn ardaloedd lle mae'r signal teledu yn isel," meddai llefarydd.
"Mae hyn wedi gwneud eu setiau teledu yn agored i ymyrraeth gan signalau Tetra. Gellir datrys yr ymyrraeth bron bob amser drwy osod ffilter priodol. "Ni all Ofcom ddarparu a gosod y ffiltrau. Mae [O2] Airwave yn trosglwyddo yn ôl ei drwydded a does dim gorfodaeth ar y cwmni i ariannu hyn."

Arsonists strike at illegal rave Monday, 3 December, 2001, 15:08 GMT
Police in Manchester are appealing for witnesses after an arson attack on a warehouse being used for an illegal rave.
The ravers were enjoying an-night event on the ground floor of Hanover Mills, Ardwick, Manchester, when a fire broke out on the sixth floor just after 0530 GMT on Sunday.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police had been made aware of the rave at 0300 GMT, but chose to allow it to continue to avoid the risk of public disorder.
Most party-goers had left the former textile mill safely by the time crews from Greater Manchester Fire Service arrived.
Evidence of arson
The fire had spread from the sixth floor to the floors above and below.
More than 100 firefighters attended.
There were no serious casualties.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester police said: "You are damned if you do and damned if you don't in these situations.
"We were made aware of an illegal rave at around 0300 GMT and our officers went to assess the situation.
"They assessed it as a low risk and formed the opinion that it would be wiser to let it go ahead rather than risk public disorder if they tried to break it up."
Detectives said on Monday they had found evidence that a number of fires had been deliberately started on different floors of the building.
