- UK : Scot : fallout from Jodi Jones murder case? Many of you will already have read the terrible details of the Jodi Jones murder case - a teenage lad in Scotland who was a heavy cannabis user stabbed his girlfriend to death in a remote wood. Its a harrowing case, and thankfully he is now in jail for life where he cannot hurt anybody else - but I can't help but think that whilst the media make a big thing about his dope smoking/dealing this lad was a psychopathic criminal who would have committed such an act whether he took drugs or not. The offender comes across as a similar personality type to the teenagers who now prey on the London party scene intent on causing violence and destruction (whilst they may carry out robberies as well there are definitely a few who just enjoy the violence for the pure thrill of it) - at least one of them has since gone down for murder. Most of the authoritarian lobby will purely blame drugs (and alcohol) for this and other crimes - and I fear that people who use drugs will all be increasingly demonised because of the actions of a violent few - already I'm reading reports about plans for spot checks on all Scots school children... I'd agree to an extent drugs can exacerbate pre-existing mental disorders - but does anyone else think they will be seen as an easy target when the real danger is far worse - a culture of violence (particularly amongst young males) where the use of force to control others and the carrying of weapons is now becoming seen as acceptable amongst some communities, which has (perhaps inadvertantly) been championed through some sections of the media - which often goes unchallenged whilst people become overly paranoid about relatively harmless substance use? Interested to see what anyone else thinks...

Quote: 'Ecstasy find' on Royal Navy ship An investigation is under way after a substance suspected to be ecstasy was found on board a Royal Navy warship. A "single individual" was helping with inquiries into the find on HMS Cumberland but no-one had been charged, a Ministry of Defence spokesman said. Results of tests on the substance were not yet complete, he added. The substance was left in the mess room by a sailor after a night out in Plymouth, where the ship is based, according to the Sun newspaper. 'Robust policy' "The special investigation branch are conducting an investigation on HMS Cumberland in relation to the alleged possession of a suspect controlled substance," the spokesman said. The Royal Navy retains a comprehensive programme of random drug testing for maximum deterrent Ministry of Defence The Royal Navy had a "very robust" policy on drugs "which would not be tolerated at any time", he added. "The Royal Navy retains a comprehensive programme of random drug testing for maximum deterrent." The Cumberland, a type 22 frigate, is based at Devonport Naval Base, in Plymouth. In May, HMS Cumberland played a major role in finding 3.5 tonnes of cocaine on a former torpedo boat in the mid-Atlantic.

- Thanks to Richie anf the Folklore deep house crew Good gig last night at Maidstones River Bar with Richie and the Folklore Crew. Deep house downstairs, hip-hop upstairs. Lots of committment and enthusiasm. These boys are going far. Shaun and Oz played with each others 12"s, as per, laying down a multi blend of deep beats across the spectrum for the delectation of the Maidstone night owls. After it was over to Margate to celebrate the lovely Tort's birthday with all the east kent boys and girls DJing and dancing away like crazy. Writing this at 11am after having just got home. With our first year of ups and downs we can gladly say that we are growing from strength to strength, we have also found a brilliant new home at the CLUB 414 (truly underground). - Pinned Bust Card BUST CARD For information and help in dealing with the Police, the courts or drug problems, contact: Release Advice Line 020 7729 9904 10-6 Monday to Friday YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE TREATED FAIRLY AND WITH RESPECT BY THE POLICE. You do not have to say anything to the police. BUT if you are later charged with a crime and you have not mentioned, when questioned, something that you later rely on in court, then this may be taken into account when deciding if you are guilty. There may be good reasons why you do not wish to say anything to the police, and you should not be intimidated into answering questions. Get a solicitor down to see you in the police station as soon as possible. REMEMBER: There may be times when if you give an innocent explanation for what you have done, the police may leave you alone. It is wise not to discuss the case with the police until you have consulted privately with a solicitor. If the police are about to arrest you or have already arrested you, there is no such thing as a `friendly chat' to sort things out. Anything you say can later be used against you. Think before you talk. WHEN THE POLICE GET IT WRONG If you want to challenge anything the police have done then get the names and addresses of any witnesses, make a written record as soon as possible after the event. It should be witnessed, dated and signed. If you are injured, or property is damaged, then take photographs or video recordings as soon as possible and have physical injuries medically examined. If you have been treated unfairly then complain to a civil liberties group such as Release or contact a solicitor about possible legal action. ON THE STREET If you are stopped by the police: If they are not in uniform then ask to see their warrant card. Ask why you have been stopped and at the end ask for a record of the search. You can be stopped and searched if the police have a reasonable suspicion that you are in possession of: -controlled drugs -offensive weapon or firearms -carrying a sharp article -carrying stolen goods -if you are in a coach or train, going to, or you have arrived at, a sports stadium There are other situations where you can be stopped and searched, for example: If police fear there might be serious violence in a particular area they can stop and search anyone in that area for up to 24 hours. In these circumstances the police do not need to have a reasonable suspicion that you are carrying a weapon or committing a crime. This very wide power can be used at raves, demonstrations etc. REMEMBER: You run the risk of both physical injury and serious criminal charges if you physically resist a search. If it is an unlawful search you should take action afterwards by using the law. IN A POLICE STATION You always have the right: to be treated humanely and with respect. to see the written codes governing your right and how you are treated. To speak to the custody officer (the officer who must look after your welfare). to know why you have been arrested. You also have the right (but they can in rare situations be delayed): to have someone notified of your arrest (not to make a phone call yourself). to consult with a solicitor privately. REMEMBER: Do not panic. You cannot be locked up indefinitely. The police sometimes keep you isolated and waiting in the cell to 'soften you up'. Above all else, try to keep calm. The police can only keep you for a certain period of time - normally a maximum of 24 hours (36 hours for a serious arrestable offence). Make sure the correct time for your arrest is on the custody record. Make sure you know why you have been arrested. Insist on seeing a solicitor (you might have to wait, but it's always free). Ask them to be present when you are interviewed. Do not be put off seeing a solicitor by the police. It is your right, and it's free. If you ask for anything and it is refused make sure this is written down on the custody record. SEARCH OF YOUR HOME The police can search premises with the consent of the occupier. A warrant can obtained from magistrates by the police to search premises for evidence of certain crimes. The police can enter premises WITHOUT a search warrant in many situations, including: following an arrest, the police are allowed to search premises the detained person occupies or has control over. To capture an escaped prisoner to arrest someone for an arrestable offence or certain public order offences. To protect life or to stop serious damage to property. other laws give police specific powers to enter premises. REMEMBER: You are entitled to see a copy of any search warrant. Police can use reasonable force to gain entry. Police should give you information about their powers to search premises. A record of the search must be kept by the police. You or a friend should be allowed to be present during the search but this right can be refused if it is thought it might hinder investigations. © Release Publications

We believe that it is the responsibility of each of us to look after ourselves. We believe it is the responsibility of each one of us to look after oneself before anyone can claim to be looking after anyone else. 2. The freedom of each of us to do as we like can interfere with the freedom of those around us. Since consideration of others within total personal freedom cannot be enforced, consideration for others is now expected from each one of us, and from us all. 3. We will act on the following: - Private interests who deny access to the countryside and who build on it. - Private criminal elites organising the sale of drugs at community events. - Private careerists who hijack the movement or any of its banners or principles. - Private landlords who allow city buildings to stand empty and unused. - We undertake to use free and squatted space efficiently and to keep an orderly house. - We undertake to discourage new communities from becoming overcrowded, or to allow them to be used as police warehousing. 4. We know the following must happen so we can continue to do what we do in freedom and fairness. We are prepared to confront hard problems with real, direct and non-violent solutions Therefore we will: - Deal with organised crime selling drugs within parties and community gatherings. - Ensure the following considerations are planned for on site and acted on at all our social gatherings. - Safe convoys to and from pitches. - Ensure fire safety and limits on numbers. - Undertake to check the sanitary arrangements and arrange basic medical care. - Venues should be away from non-participating communities with respect to noise, car, and crowd pollution. - Education and harm reduction information is on site. - Check drug taking and drug availability in the community on site. - Media coverage provisions and lawyers on site as part of our defence when dealing with the law. 5. We believe only care and attention to all the above will create safe crime free environments to provide real working models and alternatives to the Babylon control that is the Criminal Justice Bill. 6. We know that commitment to personal communication nourishes truth, freedom and honesty. We will share information, and will communicate with each other completely.
