UK : Scot : Waterstones sacks blogger TBH although I consider blogs to be rather self-indulgent (and potentially incriminating to people like us!), corporates and public sector organisations are paranoid over what their employees may say on the net, I can't believe a bookseller in a modern European country which permits free speech would do this... I will certainly boycott them after this!
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/11/waterstones_blog/
Quote:
Waterstone's throws book at blogger
By Tim Richardson
Published Tuesday 11th January 2005 12:40 GMT
Bookseller Waterstone's has sacked a long-serving employee for writing a blog. Joe Gordon from Edinburgh, who worked for the company for t11 years, says he was dismissed because he "brought the company into disrepute".
His Woolamaloo Gazette was started in 1992 and is a satirical diary that, in Gordon's own words, enables him "to vent steam on stories which are bugging me or amusing me and hopefully make people think at the same time".
Ads_kid=0;Ads_bid=0;Ads_xl=0;Ads_yl=0;Ads_xp='';Ads_yp='';Ads_opt=0;Ads_wrd='';Ads_prf='';Ads_par='';Ads_cnturl='';Ads_sec=0;
While most of the material he covers does not involve his work, he does occasionally mention his time at Waterstone's. As he puts it: "Like many folk I am not always happy at work...and coin terms such as 'Bastardstone's' and have a character called 'Evil Boss' (my equivalent to Dilbert's Pointy Haired Boss - in fact I compared head office directives to being in a Dilbert cartoon)."
While many people have already judged these this to be harmless, Waterstone's appears to believe they provide sufficient grounds for dismissal. Now Mr Gordon is angry at the way he's been treated and believes that, if the company was so offended, the matter could have been dealt with just a "quiet word".
Wrote Gordon: "I am not a serf; I am not an indentured servant. I am a free man with the right of freedom of expression. The company does not own me, body and soul - conforming to their rules at work is to be expected, but in your own time and space? How can anyone be expected to go through their personal life in fear of saying the wrong thing? No-one should.
"This has left me dreadfully upset. That a company I have given so many years to could treat me in such a brutal manner is despicable. That a book company thinks so little of the primacy of freedom of expression is alarming. I pointed out that Waterstone's has stated publicly several times in the past that as a bookseller they believe in the freedom of expression and not in censorship."
As well as winning the support of other bloggers Gordon has also won the backing of author Richard Morgan, who has added his voice to the chorus of complaints over the sacking. In a letter to the company he wrote: "While I don't wish to interfere in company business, I have to say I think this bears comparison with taking disciplinary action based on private conversation overheard in a pub, and raises some disturbing issues of freedom of speech. Waterstone's is, after all, a bookseller, whose stock in trade is the purveying of opinion, not all of it palatable to those concerned.
"You sell books which offer serious critique of the corporate environment and government, but do not expect to suffer punitive action from government or corporate quarters as a result. You sell books which criticise and satirise religious and political groups, but you do not expect to be firebombed by extremists as a result. Surely Joe has the right to let off steam in his free time without having to fear for his livelihood as a result.
"The action that has been taken so far bears more resemblance to the behaviour of an American fast food chain than a company who deal in intellectual freedoms and the concerns of a pluralist liberal society."
Despite repeated attempts to contact Waterstone's no one was available for comment at the time of writing. ®

RoR Presents… Tsunami benefit – Helping rebuild communities
All money raised at this event will go directly these grassroots groups to help them to rebuild their lives and livelihoods after the tsunami disaster. We support the large western NGOs in their work to bring aid to the people and areas where it is needed. However, there are also many smaller indigenous organisations who work within their communities to improve the lives and the sustainability of the livelihoods. The fantastic line-up for the night reflects influences from all over Asia and the affected regions.

TUC says ‘sicknote UK’ is urban myth http://news.scotsman.com/archive.cfm?id=19322005
CLAIMS that the UK has become "sicknote Britain" because of the number of workers taking days off when they are not really ill were attacked as an "urban myth" in a new report today.
The TUC said British workers were less likely to take short-term time off sick than workers in any other European country except Denmark.
Most employers accepted that their staff only took time off work when they were genuinely ill, the organisation said.
A bigger problem was the high number of people who struggled into work when they were ill, spreading germs among colleagues and threatening long-term absence, the TUC claimed.
The report, Sicknote Britain, also claimed public sector employees took fewer days off ill than workers in private firms.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "Sicknote Britain is an urban myth. When employers complain of sicknote Britain, they’re attacking some of Europe’s most loyal employees. Those who’ve been trying to make cheap political points about getting tough with the ’work-shy spongers’ are completely missing the point.
"People on Incapacity Benefit have very genuine problems which make it very difficult for them to take the majority of jobs on offer."
The TUC also highlighted estimates that suggest work- related stress costs employers more than £350 million a year.
"The UK needs a system that puts the prevention of illness and disease first, then offers high-quality rehabilitation, with benefits only existing as a general fall-back when all else has failed," said the report.

OK, so how are we gonna keep the scene alive? The usual discussions are going on about parties - "they're not as good as they use to be / too many chavs/too much trouble / cops are hassling us / buildings not good enough " etc...
As the same time, the level of opposition to parties has become greater than ever before. Zero tolerance, ASBOs, more confiscations and lately civil recovery attempts - a situation where the Police are passing on details to building owners who are then trying to recover the cost of damage to venues via the civil courts from "organisers"
There's also the constant sceptre of violence.
Iin London it is the usual street gangs you'd expect to find in a city where people are stabbed or beat up for fuck all and even the bull-terriers get mugged (I'm not making this up, one was recently knocked about, locked in a cupboard and had all her pups stolen - poor bitch :( )
but in the outer-london or "bumpkin" parties we are now increasingly seeing people bringing private feuds to parties; and behaviour where people attend parties looking for a fuck and a fight..
And perhaps with hindsight party crews pushed things way beyond what the rest of society will tolerate, particularly when you start adding up the financial costs of trashed buildings, ambulance callouts etc.
My day job often involves checking costs of buildings maintenance amongst other things, I can confirm that people aren't exaggerating when they say tens of thousands of pounds of damage are caused!
I also found records of a parliament debate which implies the new CJA amendments were fast-tracked in 2004 due to an increase in rave activity in 2002-2003, and locals complaining to their MPs.
so what are we gonna do about it?
To be fair most crews are aware of this.
The better London ones are deploying security in various forms, and although it increases door prices and ends up with the guards regulating the start/finish times it is the only realistic solution to deal with the level of violence on London's streets today. That said, free parties still remain safer than licensed events, even in London - (there were at least two shootings at licensed NYE events in London this year!)
Out in the provinces people are finally becoming more selective about their venues and picking actual disused buildings rather than "between lets" warehouses - rinsing these is obvious trouble!
but a lot of it is up to those who attend the parties - this means YOU!
We actually need more people to help out with parties - and less slating of the new crews for "not having enough sound" etc!
Sound kit doesn't grow on trees, its paid for out of peoples own pockets and jobs are becoming harder to get and keep.. big up Aztek, Confusion/ZT, and all the newer crews who have started up and anyone else thinking of starting one - we need you lot!
Furthermore, people who have partied hard over the last couple of years may be taking a break for a bit - the stress is clearly starting to show on some of them, even the younger ones.
Many partygoers don't see the behind the scenes stress that can happen because of parties, particularly when the authorities become involved ; when crew people get nicked it often does affect their lives at work and their families (home addresses often end up being checked out for bail, employers notified, all sorts of stuff) - most crew people are not master criminals so those close to them are understandably concerned.
you would not however expect non-raving relatives and employers to support an activity seen at the best slightly morally questionable and at the worst criminally anti-social - so the support needs to come from us.
How many people have helped out at a personal level someone from a party crew who has had hassles, even if its just speaking to them and letting them know they have some support.. or perhaps helped them find a home or employment if things get really bad? How many people actually even think about this?
As for behaviour at parties; I shouldn't need to say this (as its already been mentioned for the last 3 years) but leave the "litten tree" mentality back in your city or town!
Smashing and fighting does nobody any favours, and whilst its possible you may over the months/years meet someone who also likes raving in your town or city and likes you as well, the party itself shouldn't be a cattle market where you are trying to pull and people feel at risk of harrasment, or people's drug impaired judgement makes them think they can drive a wedge between a couple.
this sort of thing is bound to eventually kick things off and we don't want "townie" style violence in parties, without the bouncers it could get really dark.
So perhaps the solution is "less is more?" A return in 2005 to smaller events with about 3 rigs max, held in places which are definitely unused for other purposes and do not cause disruption, and with people attending who are there for the right reasons and can behave appropriately?
TBH I reckon these sort of events are more likely to lead to lasting alliances and friendships than the often rather impersonal multi-riggers, - perhaps this is the way forward....
Pills and Shrooms ??? New year on pills untill 4am then munched some shrooms went to the beach to see the first sun rise of the new year.

Whats up? I'm a music writer and I'm putting together a piece on Squat
party's in London for US magazine The Fader. I'd love to hear from people in
London whom follow the warehouse party scene either as part of a
collective/rig or just as a raver.
It would also be great to hear from people outside of london so I can email
you a couple of questions about how this scene connects with free party
scene going off across the world and why you choose to be part of this
scene instead of going to a licensed club.
Hope to hear from you soon, imput from everyone-DJ's, rig owners, forum
hosts, website managers, is really really welcome.
peace. sarah b xx
