Its far more than a story about a cool toy - its an excellent article about how a young lady who did not follow the "normal" ground-rules of conservative American society yet still managed to do well even in business - it shows liberal America at its best and is a glimmer of hope for the world. (She hasn't even had a big company try to sue her yet for copying designs !)
It is something we can certainly learn from here in Britain - we have loads of innovative high-tech companies; yet I bet none of them would take the risk of employing (even as a consultant) a "non-graduate", despite the clear facts that those who create technological solutions for the passion of it often have far better drive than those whose minds have been dulled and corrupted by the "youth farming" that goes on in our "dreaming spires of Varsity"..

FREE PARTIES UNDER THREAT IN FRANCE FREE PARTIES UNDER THREAT IN FRANCE
The french National Assembly is ready to pass an anti-free parties law on june the 26th allowing the confiscation permanently of sound systems and live sets etc...Aware of this alarming situation french sound systems and artists have united and engaged in negociations with governement officials and the National Assembly. Unfortunetaly talks held with the Home Minister have been suspended due to the unwillingness of the latter to listen to us.
This means foreign sound systems organizing parties or going to Technivals in France (which will not stop) could face problems. This law could also inspire legislators from other countries to follow suit and adopt their own versions of the Criminal Justice Bill.
HOW TO HELP THE EUROPEAN FREE TECHNO SCENE ?
There will be demonstrations taking place outside french embassies and consulates throughout Europe and in New York saturday the 23rd of june at 2.30 p.m. local time. It is imperative you go to defend freedom of expression and freedom to dance ,circulate this letter to as many people as you can wherever they are by any means available ,contact the correspondants of the french press (Agence France Presse, Le Monde, Le Figaro, Libération...). Bring banners, homemade T -shirts, radio-cassette players....Each group should bring a petition signed by as many people as possible
under the following text.
"The prospect of France, a nation traditionally at the forefront of the defense of human rights, restricting the freedom to demonstrate and repressing an important form of artistic expression which has become a worldwide phenomenon is deeply disturbing.
France has been a major contributor to the success of electronic music and french techno has gained recognition on a international level due to free events.
By introducing a hurried improvised legislation the french governement will bring irrepairable damage to underground music, not to mention endangering the existence of many artists and sound systems all over Europe .
We invite the french governement to cancel the project and restart negociations on a fair bilateral basis with representatives of the sound systems and artists. Furthermore we announce that we will attend free events in France this summer to protect freedom of expression and the right to dance for free."

Il est impératif que vous alliez défendre la liberté d'expression et la liberté de danser hors des structures commerciales: faites circuler comme vous le pouvez ce texte auprès d'un maximum de gens, contactez la correspondants de la presse française dans votre pays (Agence France Presse, Le Monde, Libération, Le Figaro), emmenez des calicots, faites de T-Shirts, apportez des radio K7 portables... Chaque groupe de participant devrait apporter une pétition signée sous le texte ci-après:

Questo significa anche che i sound systems stranieri che organizzano feste in Francia o che si rendono a dei Technivals (che non si fermeranno), rischiano dei problemi. E imperativo che andate a difendere la libertà di espressione e la libertà di ballare fuori delle strutture commerciale. Fate circolare al massimo questo testo in tutti possibili modi, chiamate i corrispondenti della stampa francese nelle vostre città (Agence France Presse, Le Monde, Libération, Le Figaro...), Portate degli striscioni, fate degli T-Shirt, portate radio cassette a pila etc...Ogni gruppo di partecipante dovrebbe portare una petizione firmata sotto il testo seguente:

stop & search/id cards/ASBOs I am really worried by all these:
1 stop & search powers (supposedly for anti terrorism purposes)
2 id cards (supposedly to find terrorists (though this didn't work in the Madrid bombing)/expel illegal immigrants)
3 ASBOs (supposedly to protect the law abiding middle classes from 'gangs' of youths)
What these measures are really about are:
1 free rein to interfere with private citizens going about their business although they are not breaking ANY LAW
2 to monitor every person's movements and reduce our freedom so we are cowed and obedient in the face of 'the law'.
3 to pander to unsubstantiated fears of a minority fanned by hysterical media coverage. Youths wear hoods because it's fashion - listen to their conversations and they are about who's got the coolest phone. Paedophilia is last year's bogeyman, hence this ludicrous witch hunt.
Why is nothing being done about protesting about these outrageous infringements on our liberty? Has no-one noticed?
Washed up hash… Hi all,
I've just found a "non-negligible quantity" of hash washed up on the beach... Unfortunatley none of the bars were in their protective plastic wrapping so it's taken on a bit of water. It's obviously been in the water for at least a couple of weeks but it still smells of dope if you can get past the salty-seaweed smell...
I was just wondering if anyone here has had a similar experience and found an intersting way of making use of it...?
If not I'm gonna end up with a 3 year supply of very-very salty Marrakesh butter... :-)

UK : BT switch to renewable energy Background for non UK readers: BT (British Telecommmunications plc) is the UK's main telco, providing comms services to nearly all ISPs in the UK apart from a handful of cable companies.

Two new wind farms which will generate enough power for 118,000 homes were given the go-ahead in Scotland last week.
Deputy Enterprise Minister Allan Wilson has announced turbines will be built at Braes of Doune, near Dunblane, and Farr, near Tomatin in the Highlands.

I think the reasons are as much financial and technical as altruistic - renewable power systems which depend on intermittent energy sources (sun/wind) work better if used with a large DC storage battery to store the power for later use.
Now there just happens to be a very large battery in every BT telephone exchange (some of them take up entire rooms the size of a tennis court) - and its just the correct voltage to be as efficient without danger of electric shock (-48V dc) - BT need the battery anyway as an integral part of how the telephone system works, most exchange buildings are large with lots of spare space nowadays - and the roof will be full of mobile phone repeaters, sat dishes etc so another mast makes no difference..
Its an excellent bit of good practice though, making use of both new and tried and tested technology. For once BT has done something right..
