Arts funding freeze sparks fury

Leading arts figures reacted with fury yesterday after the government announced a £30m cut in funding in real terms - the first such setback to the arts since the Labour victory in 1997.
John Tusa, managing director of the Barbican, described the decision as a "slap in the face" and a return to "the bad old days". He said that those involved in the arts had been "namby-pamby" in their dealings with the government, and advised them to get "rough".
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport announced that its allocation of funding to Arts Council England would be frozen at its 2005 level of £413m until 2008. Taking into account Treasury inflation estimates, the grant will be worth £10m less in the financial year 2006-07 and £20m less in 2007-08, meaning a total shortfall of £30m in real terms.

and (unsurprisingly) the Graun is full of further articles.
Sadly, this is the reality of our current situation, there is a war on (whether we like it or not) - that takes £1,000,000 out of the public purse every day in the UK... (thats just frontline costs BTW, it does not include the extra security/policing costs caused by the terrorism paranoia and the the deterioration in racial and community relations)
That said, if you can make the right contacts I'm not sure if this news is all bleak. I see a lot of arts funding going to "big and worthy" projects such as operas and high-brow plays - TBH the bulk of the populace is not interested in; hardly surprising people do not think this is money well spent.
So why not give some money to what are called "quick wins" projects, ones which have less initial spend and are delivered in a faster turnaround time? A lot of the arts projects created by younger people are of this nature; and it would encourage much needed new talent.
I wonder if we could make something good of this situation..

These guys are the free party scenes acceptable face, and one of our best chances of being heard and taken seriously. They run an event in guildford to highlight social and environmental issues, and also run a fuckin sick festival. i cant imagine how they must feel... theyve been building steam for over a decade, with seven picnics under their belt- the started off as ravers, now they hold this 10,000 people event, right in tory heartlands! you dont get many of them to the penny, so if you have any support, contribution, donation, aid or advice, wether you can lend your rig or just cheer them up, i recon they deserve all the luck and help they can get.

FreeParties in Winter – any ideas? Me an my crew were just havin a discussion/ aguement about putting freeparties on in winter- for anyone who cares our very first rave was an insane N.Y.E. party in the snow inna marquee in a feild- NOT advisable, tho a great memory.
But I cant get with squat parties unless i'm well sure of the venue- there are too many fuct up ting that happen indoors (leckky, poo, unsafe structures, firehazards, dark little corners for muggers to hide etc) for me to feel good bout squatties. I would feel shite if any horror happened at our parties.
generally we just do clubnights and house parties untill mayday, but a few of our crew are getting antsy about this situ and wanna rock it all year long (fair play)
Bottom line : any suggestions?
lawrie immersion…munt on! Went to a Munt party on 6 Nov, Lawrie Immersion was on and played the most blinding set ever. Heard his Squat Rock for the first time this summer and was most impressed. It's a fantastic piece of music. Most of the music he played at the munt was his own work I'm sure, it all sounded amazing.
He's on again on 18 Dec, and I cant wait.
POLICE and MEDIA gubbins I only just got round to the video download section- i'd never seen the actual footage of the bristol bust - know as the cumberland basin incident locally. heard sooo much about it from various heads, its one of the "things to know in the area" and everyones got an opinion on it. was wicked seeing the footage and realising that one man with a camera and a will, brought that to national attention.
helped with acouple o raves near there, bout half mile up the river n the forest. my old route to uni is under that flyover, and the local grafitti "wall of fame" is there which ive dubbed a couple o times. the thing that made me think the cops went nuts is about 150metres away over a bridge on th railway, is the police horse training ground, where they have stables and kennels for their dogs. who must have loved it, u know animals and loudness, they shit emselves. we've got a sound place now, so they arent fussed so long as it isnt rinsed.
go into the city, tho and its much worse. most squat parties get fucked by the pigs (unless its a live-in squat that people respect) proper london hardcore style.
i think thats the diff between urban and rural partys (squat vs outdoor)
just after the police stomped on the peace protests in bristol (they did stomp and it was peacefull appart fromthat) i was devising a plan to launch water bombs with pioson in to get the military vehicles that stomped our freedom of speech (horses).i was talked out of it by mates. im sure there were cameras there, but noone complained (the news coverage was sayin we got fucked coz we deserved it- bollocks there was old folk there).
just goes to show if we dont 'cover' our events (i realise what the word means now) noone will.
where r all the free parties? where r all the free parties? i live on dartmoor devon and from 1999 till 2002 there where free parties every summer up in some woods run by the forestry commision by a massive resivoir called fernworthy but the last 2 years it has been dead, the local raving commuity of dartmoor need more raves so please some one hear our call cos we need to keep the tradition of raving going in devon.

From net-cops to hobby bobbies? rather worrying - IME IT workers are either very liberal/hedonistic or very conservative (to the point of right-wing extremism). you can of course see which sort will want to become a special..
Incidentally is the UK the only European nation with this peculiar concept of a volunteer police force?

IT pros called to become boys in blue

IT professionals could soon be asked to volunteer their services to police the Internet.
The European Information Society Group (EURIM) is calling on the government to employ the services of IT workers as special constables.
The request has apparently been welcomed by commissioner of the Metropolitan police Sir John Stevens.
"I think we should be using special constables," said chairman of EURIM Brian White, MP. "IT managers could be given special powers. If they were trained in evidence gathering, they could report straight to the Crown Prosecution Service. [They could] secure crime scenes and give records to court, for example."
The recommendations follow findings earlier this year that only 240 people were qualified to work in digital forensics and evidence recovery. EURIM is proposing to increase the number of skilled police officers patrolling the cyber world.
White said that legislation alone was not enough to fight cybercrime, and more had to be done to improve the level of skilled police for the Internet.
As part of EURIM's proposals, White added that the UK needed better methods of reporting cybercrime because local police stations were ill-equipped to handle the task.
EURIM also proposed that some of the barriers to becoming a special constable should be removed, especially for IT specialists.
"One of the things you need to be [to join the special constables] is physically fit," said Philip Virgo, secretary general for EURIM. "There would probably be lots of people who could monitor Internet chat rooms who couldn't police the town on a Friday night. There are lots of boundaries to this that don't need to be there."
EURIM also called for IT specialists to contribute ideas for Internet policing, as the debate for what role the Serious Organised Crime Agency will play will begin over the next few weeks. EURIM said it wanted to use the opportunity to ensure that people had a centralised point of contact when they needed to report a cybercrime.
Currently, the Metropolitan Police Computer Crime Unit in London has 11 officers.
