Rapture returns! Saw on one of the media news sites that club channel Rapture TV is to be re-launched soon (having changed ownership and run out of cash a few times IIRC) - albeit sharing an EPG on SkyDigital (industry-speak for a digital channel position)
They (understandably) concentrate on commercial events - and IIRC it was just the standard shots of stomping people, munted interviews with DJs and clubbers (which from experience is all the material you are likely to get videoing clubs!) with a few music videos, however it is good I suppose to see at least one UK-based dance music TV channel.
Might also be of interest to the East Anglian massive as they may know people who work or have worked there, IIRC Rapture used to be based at Anglia in Norwich (nearly went for a job there once!)
I don't even have sky though....
Middle England pro hunt lot – the *real* terrorist threat! After years of increased public access to lobby MPs and watch Westminster and Whitehall at work - now armed police guard the House of Commons, in a country where we once proudly said we did not need to have them there.
Not because of Usama Bin Laden or the Real IRA - but born and bred white middle class males, fighting for the "right" to kill animals in a sadistic and cruel manner (using other animals from the same species group who are themselves killed aftr they "cease to be of use").
When our political system, flawed as it is, produced (by democratic vote) a result they didn't want, they took to the streets to protest.
When the Police moved in to regulate the flow of protesters, they were pelted, and firearms and explosives discharged in their direction. The shotgun cartridges may be blank, and the explosives mere display fireworks - but this is nevertheless a symbolic act of war - something no other activist group (other than those who are part of or linked to terrorist organisations) have brought to the streets of London in the last 20 years.
And it is surely very unpatriotic to put extra stress on your countrys emergency services at a time of war - a war these self-same self-centred individuals no doubt support in their misguided desires to see "the return of the proud British empire"?
They also used inside knowledge provided by their privileged class to infiltrate the very seat of British government in disguise, and attempt to disrupt proceedings after a democratic vote had not gone in their favour. Luckily for all involved the trouble was verbal eather than physical; but now instead of men in tights guarding our politicians it is men in guns.
So much for "British traditions of civilised argument, restraint (and a modicum of cross-dressing). Jokes aside, London is now an even more paranoid and angry place (particularly for any other activists who want to exercise their right to protest) and nothing whatsoever has been solved by the protests. essentially they have led to everyones freedom being limited further.
Elsewhere, worse stuff happens - an electricity pylon carrying 132,000 volts is partly sawn through by a "pro hunting" group (the pro-hunt lobby did threaten to do so earlier in the year). Luckily these pylons are made of strong stuff - but had they succeeded they would have not only put themselves in mortal danger but disrupted the lives of thousands, and increased their utility bills.
I think we've now found out who some of the terrorists and traitors really are..
The night of the packs : an international underground party the 10.30.04 The night of the packs : an international underground party the 10.30.04
We, artists, performers, tribes from the Free Art, we have been undergoing police repressions, abusive laws, the pressures of cultural industries and capitalist economy for a long time.
To denounce these intolerable pressures, we declare the weekend of October 30th will be « the night of the packs ».
One night so that everybody will demonstrate his know-how and creativity in the dark, an international underground night !
Let 10 000 spots joyfully illuminate and fertilize the cultural aridity !

Apache (old TV safety film from 70s/80s) Probably one for those in their late 20s/early 30s - but does anyone else remember being thoroughly freaked out by this? it was TX'd amongst the kiddies programmes years ago on Southern TV and may have also been shown in Anglia and Westward regions (there being lots of farms there...); the kids were killed off to a soundtrack of a childrens choir singing "ten little indians.."
The film would also have shown in schools on 16mm projectors and early video equipment (including obligatory 28" telly in brown wooden case on a large stand :) ) and may have been used well into the 1980s - perhaps untill 1986/7 or so!
it did its job, I can remember it 20+ years later and it still unnerves me..

APACHE (late 70s)
ITV
NIGHTMARE-inducing production, shown to kids in school assemblies to learn them of the dangers of arseing about with dangerous farming equipment. No doubt there was a rash of this kind of thing, what with The Wurzels in the charts and everything. Also shown on Southern TV in the summer of 1978, as recalled by Jeremy Kinsman: "It was narrated by a teenager and concerned a group of his friends playing on a farm. Here's the gruesome bit - each one of them dies or is killed in the most unpleasant circumstances: one is chopped up in a combine harvester, one drinks some poison, one drives over the cliff in a tractor, one has his head smashed in by a heavy metal gate post! Nothing was left to your imagination either and all this during the school holidays at about 10am in the morning. I can't believe that the IBA allowed it to be broadcast but I guess as a warning about the dangers of messing about on a farm it was very, very effective."
UK : Lard shortage threatens traditional Xmas food! This is a real news report. The story has in fact turned up in some form on every news source in the UK since the weekend - predictably the more rabid conservative newspapers are blaming all of this on those "new EU countries".
Should this "real and present danger" to Middle England's Christmas cuisine get any worse, a certain Boris Johnson would be well advised to stay clear of any butchers, rendering plants or similar places, at least not without appropriate security protection.
The Tories have already shown their great lack of unity and tolerance in stitching him up at the weekend; and I reckon they'd get a fair few kilos (sorry, pounds and ounces ;) ) out of him - enough for a few Xmas puddings.

Lard crisis: mince pies threatened as supplies dwindle
Supermarkets fear panic buying in the run-up to Christmas
Helen Carter
Tuesday November 16, 2004
The Guardian
Lard fans regard it as a gastronomic delicacy which makes cakes, pastry and roast potatoes taste fantastic. But others, notably vegetarians, think it is a disgusting animal fat.
It was immortalised as a comedy prop when the former deputy leader of the Labour party Roy Hattersley failed to turn up for a scheduled appearance on BBC TV's Have I Got News for You. He was replaced by a large tub of lard.
But there is now a national shortage of lard and supermarket shelves are emptying. Notices have begun to appear apologising for the European lard shortage.
There are fears of panic buying in the run-up to Christmas when it is traditionally an ingredient in mince pies and Christmas puddings.
Demand in east European countries for cheap cuts of pork has led to a shortage of meat suitable for rendering into lard. New members of the European Union, including Hungary and Poland, are buying within the union to avoid a levy on non-EU imports.
Supermarkets such as Morrisons have been forced to display signs on shelves apologising for the lack of lard. Somerfield said it had already been forced to limit the number of tubs of lard on sale at each of its stores. It is advising customers to check their local stores to see if another delivery has arrived.
A statement from Morrisons said: "There is a general shortage of lard, but we are still getting supplies. Customer information notices have been made available to all our stores which inform our customers of the general shortage."
Notices have also been spotted in Sainsbury's supermarkets. One in a Cardiff branch read: "Due to the European lard shortage, we are currently unable to supply this product."
Margarine and cooking oil have been put forward as potential substitutes.
Paul Heathcote, the restaurateur who owns the Simply Heathcotes and Olive Press chain, said lard had become more popular due to the resurgence of old-fashioned British cooking.
"For the first time in a long time, British cooking is being taken seriously and is appearing on menus in gastropubs and in restaurants. In recent years, vegetable shortening has been something which has taken over from lard because of the rise in the number of vegetarians.
"Lard makes chips and Yorkshire puddings taste absolutely fantastic - they taste entirely different with lard."
He said his business was considering reintroducing fish and chips cooked with lard on to its menus as it had found a fryer which continually filters the cooking fat.
"I didn't realise there was a shortage of lard," he added. "I just thought it was related to people's changing tastes."
But he said there were problems with using lard because of the large percentage of non-meat eaters. It is also non-Kosher and so not suitable for Jewish clients.
"You can't beat lard for roast potatoes with a Sunday roast," he added. "It gives a really meaty taste and can be mixed with a little bit of oil to help keep the temperature right."
But for lard fans, there is always the lard cam - which shows a fridge crammed with lard. It has been set up by the British Lard Marketing Board, a jokey site which promotes the use of the animal fat beneath the slogan: "Not suitable for weirdy vegetarians."
Richest of fats
· Lard is made from hog fat and is richer than other fats.
· It is popularly used in flaky biscuits and pastries.
· Lard has fewer calories than butter: one tablespoon contains 13 grams of fat, 116 calories and 12 milligrams of cholesterol.
· Lardo di Colonnata, a heavily seasoned version of lard, is a delicacy in the Apuane mountains in Italy.
· Chocolard (from the British Lard Marketing Board website). Melt a block of lard in a pan. Stir in two dessert spoons full of cocoa and two tablespoons of sugar (white, refined). Pour into a mould. When nearly set, add a fancy pattern and when set wrap in tinfoil.
· A block of lard makes an excellent skating rink for insects
UK : Mental health and drug problems increasing.. From the Grauniad. Article slightly trimmed... full report is here.
http://society.guardian.co.uk/mentalhealth/story/0,8150,1352466,00.htm
Sadly, I think this report is pefectly accurate; I can personally state I know a lot of party people who have experienced or are experiencing some form of mental health issue; OTOH I can't help but believe wider societys negative attitude towards initially unproblematic recreational drug use actually increases the problem by making people more paranoid, angry and guilty?

More patients battle mental health and drug problems
Annie Kelly
Tuesday November 16, 2004
The number of people who abuse drugs and suffer from mental health problems has risen by more than 60% in five years, researchers said today.
New research has revealed that GPs are reporting a rapid increase of patients with mental health problems combined with substance abuse, with more people showing symptoms in their early 30s.
An analysis of data submitted by doctors to the General Practice Research Database in England and Wales shows that the number of people with mental illness and drug abuse has soared from 23,624 in 1993 to 37,361 in 1998.
Numbers of cases in the 25-34 age bracket more than doubled from 6,874 to 13,240 over the same period. Men are more likely to be affected than women with rates rising by 70% in men, compared with 44% in women.
In the report, the researchers from Keele University warned that links between mental health problems and drug use were rising more rapidly for serious psychiatric conditions.
The rate of psychosis and drug abuse has soared by 147% over a five-year period, and rates of schizophrenia combined with substance misuse rose by 128% in the same time period.
The report said it was crucial to determine what assessments and interventions were needed to provide an effective response to the problem.
"It is important to improve competencies in primary care teams, taking into account the changing problems they face in the management of substance misuse and psychiatric illness," researchers said.
Campaigners have been lobbying for many years for a better understanding of the link between mental health and drug dependency.

TVP,ufton nervet, post traumatic stress disorder and raves! I didn't really want to post this rather heavy message but with many friends in party crews this is something which has been bothering me lately....
Everyone is no doubt aware of the terrible train crash just outside Reading. I won't say any more of this as I am sick to the teeth of the media coverage already; they don't turn up when positive stuff happens here
as part of the emergency response, most of the local old bill would have been deployed at some time or another to the scene for the usual policing duties associated with a major incident. These are the same officers who carry out local policing duties in this area, including turning up at raves. some may also have been present at the ill-fated Halloween rave in our area.
these officers have been exposed to some very disturbing and stressful situations, and may be suffering forms of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). The macho culture prevalent in the emergency services could lead to many not seeking treatment; attempting to fight off any mental problems themselves.
worse still, there have even been some rather uncomplimentary comments on other rave message boards, criticising the TVP response to this incident (FFS there is nothing old bill can do to stop a train at 100mph, the train driver can't do it either...) - and a media allegation the lunatic who parked his car on the level crossing was an angry drug user
but why could this affect raves? Well we are now in a situation in our area where TVP at senior level have authorised the use of an extra level of force to stop rave events. The October police response was unprecedented for any public order situation in our area.
One symptom of PTSD is increased agression, and there is a possibility some cops may try to "get over" the train incident by deliberately volunteering for or creating situations where they can "prove themselves". Might be something we should be on the lookout out for in our area..
