Raid closes rave on river beach
A police raid has put a stop to an illegal party on a beach alongside the River Colne in Essex.
Two people going to the event between Alresford and Wivenhoe were arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.
Officers raided the party early on Sunday morning after residents complained of the noise the 80 people were making.
Chief Insp Iain Logan said: "Our policy is to act early and disrupt illegal events such as these."
He added they caused nuisance to residents and were generally held in inappropriate or dangerous venues with no consideration for those attending.
Organisers can expect arrest
"Organisers can expect to be arrested, prosecuted and have their equipment seized if they fail to comply with directions from police to close their event.
"Police stayed at the beach area until all those taking part had dispersed and the sound equipment was dismantled.
"We found items associated with drug-taking but no arrests were made although two people on their way to the event were questioned after arrest on suspicion of drink-driving."
Several raves across the east of England were stopped by police last weekend

Welsh Harp rave blocked thisislocallondon.co.uk
After Kingsbury residents were plagued by two illegal all-night raves, Brent Council says it has thwarted a third.
People living near the Welsh Harp endured two sleepless nights when revellers pitched up on land next to the reservoir on July 16 and August 8.
The gang erected makeshift sound-systems pounding out ear-blasting party music into the small hours.
Many tired and angry residents were readying themselves for another ear-bashing on Saturday last week when the council stepped in.
When word went round that another rave was planned for August 14, environmental health and nuisance control officers fitted padlocks to gates, and installed bollards at the Birchen Grove entrance to the site and 12 steel girders at the Cool Oak Lane entrance.
Security guards also patrolled the area over the weekend.
In the face of such determined action, the rave was cancelled.
Councillor Lesley Jones, Brent Council's lead member for the environment, said: "Quick action saved dozens of residents from the distress that the noise and activity of illegal raves produce.
"As soon as we found out an illegal rave was planned we took positive steps to make sure it was thwarted."

Illegal ravers strike in forest again August 16, 2004 19:21
PARTYGOERS who attend illegal all-night raves in a forest have been warned they risk causing serious destruction to the woodland and animal habitats.
More than 1,000 people attended a rave in Thetford Forest on Saturday night – the latest in a series of outdoor parties to take place across the region in recent weeks.
Norfolk police received several complaints about noise from the party, which was held in the Warren Wood area of the forest between Thetford and Brandon.
But ravers who attended the event, which carried on well into Sunday, said there had been no problems and everyone had had a good time.
One partygoer, who asked not to be named, said: "It was a really good atmosphere and everyone was just there to enjoy themselves.
"A lot more people turned up to this event than they did to the last one that was held in Thetford and there were also more rigs than expected.
"It was really well organised and everyone was very friendly and there was no trouble whatsoever."
But Mike Taylor, operations manager for the Forestry Commission in East Anglia, said the raves were quickly becoming a major problem in rural areas.
"Ground nesting birds can be disturbed by these activities and people can often trash a site and probably do not perceive that they are doing any damage," he added.
Although the rave was attended by police officers, its size and the fact no criminal activity was taking place meant it was allowed to continue.
A police spokesman said: "The number of events such as this seems to rise at this time of year because of the nice weather and more and more people are choosing to hold the events outdoors rather than in buildings.
"When we attend these events, we always monitor the site carefully to make sure no public disorders are taking place.
"Even if no criminal activity is taking place, civil offences are probably being carried out because these people will be trespassing on someone's land and will not have got an entertainment licence to hold the event."
A spokesman for Norfolk Fire Service warned there were a number of potential fire-related hazards at illegal outdoor raves.
"Although we would never condone such behaviour, if people are going to hold a rave, they need to be fully aware of the dangers and need to take great care and have regard for their surroundings," he said.
party people getting *angrier?* whilst we've had a good year so far, something has been worrying me for some time...
anyone else noticed a lot more fights and angry scenes at parties recently?
Not just the stuff like robberies/thefts of mobile phones which has always happened in rougher inner city areas (but sadly is also now happening outside them)
but stuff like a dispute within a group of people or even "banter" getting out of hand leading to raised voices and sometimes even actual physical violence?
I'm sure there used to be less of this and I'm not talking about "back in the day" (when TBH violence was not uncommon) but in the last 2-3 years..
I'd attend a party in 1998-2001 and there would be no major problems whatsoever (and I'm often always exploring the whole site and notice everythign and everybody at parties) but recently it doesn't matter if I'm in a shitty London warehouse our out on the ridgeway - I'm guaranteed to witness at least one angry scene :(
what is doing this I wonder? Cocaine? People's internal politics? Or just that people are doing more drugs and staying up longer (lack of sleep often makes people irrational and irritable)? Maybe the scenes better known (it has been going for 14 years now) so more "townie" types are attending parties..
There used to be an "unwritten rule" that you didn't bring personal disputes to a rave but this seems to have evaporated. Anyone else noticed this?

Stabbing attacker goes free 21 August 2004
http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3009939a10,00.html
The family of a Templeton woman who was stabbed in the brain with a kitchen knife is outraged her attacker has been allowed to walk free.
Stable hand Gareth William Davis, 19, admitted he launched a naked attack on his best friend's mother, Sandra Didham, in her home late at night on June 22 last year.
But Davis successfully claimed that the rave drug he had accepted from a stranger in a hotel toilet several hours before left him in a state where he was not responsible for his actions. His lawyer was able to argue he was in a state of automatism.
Christchurch District Court Judge Murray Abbott told the jurors the law was that even if Davis willingly took the drug – contended to be the hallucinogenic anaesthetic ketamine – they must acquit him if they found it a reasonable possibility that he did not know what he was doing.
Didham is still recovering from her brain injury and was not in court to hear the not-guilty verdicts. However, relatives and supporters reacted with outrage at the defence that allowed Davis to walk free.
A spokeswoman for the family, who declined to identify herself, called for the law to be changed to prevent other violent attackers getting off without any penalty because they had willingly taken drugs.
"He didn't have to take the drug, even if he was offered it," she said.
"Nobody forced him."
Davis did not react to the verdict initially but soon after broke down in sobs. His family wept openly after he was acquitted but declined to comment.
Through their lawyer, Jonathan Eaton, they said later that their thoughts and sympathies remained with Sandra Didham and her family, with whom they had been on friendly terms.
Prosecutor Phil Shamy had told the court that Davis had frequently stayed the night at the Didhams' Templeton home before the attack.
About 1.30am, Davis arrived unannounced at Sandra Didham's door and claimed he was locked out of his parents' home 150m away. She offered him a place to sleep.
Two hours later, she was having trouble sleeping and had gone to the kitchen to make a drink when she noticed a sudden movement in the lounge, Shamy said.
"A moment later she was attacked by Davis, who was naked at the time and had a weapon, most likely a knife from her kitchen," he added.
"During the course of the struggle, she suffered a serious stab wound to her right temple, which pierced the skull and entered the brain."
Didham's screams woke her son, who came to her aid. Davis ran to the room he had been offered, dressed, then ran out the back door, yelling: "Oh, no. Oh, no."
When Davis was located about 7am, he told police he had been drinking the previous night at the Islington Hotel, Shamy added.
"At the hotel, he went into the toilet and took a pill from someone he didn't know and hadn't met before. He felt unwell and vomited two or three minutes later and then he remembers nothing else until he returned home the next morning."
Eaton told the jury Davis was devastated when he was told what he had done and was deeply sorry for the injuries he accepted that he had inflicted.
"However the defence is focused not on what happened but on how it came to happen," Eaton said.
Davis did not give evidence but the jury heard from pharmacologists and psychiatrists about possible effects of the pill.
Christchurch psychiatrist Phil Brinded said he thought it was likely Davis had been in a state of automatism at the time of the attack, while another psychiatrist said it was reasonably possible.
Judge Abbott called on the jury to approach dispassionately the crucial issue of whether Davis was in a state of automatism at the time of the knife attack.
The jury deliberated for about four hours before finding Davis not guilty on alternative charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and recklessly causing the injuries.
