  • hello wondering if anyone can do me a massive favour and give me advice on laptops… as im hoping to get one all i want to do is play music on it. however i want a quick one with enough memory for an eternity of soundz

And also can i get an adaptor so i can have it in the car

Most Laptops have really shit soundcards so you will need to budget an extra £100 (approx) for either an external usb soundcard (Creative or similar) or an internal PMCIA jobby like an Echo DJ (which is what I use).As far as the laptop goes look for fastest processor most memory and biggest hard drive your budget allows.:bounce_fl:bounce_g:

Advice = Dont get that one that explodes

I’ve found Toshibas to be robust and not blighted by the “exploding Japanese battery” problem that has affected Dells and other machines using Sony battery technology..

If you pick up last years model it tends to be cheaper, and have less design faults as well.

May be an idea to get a couple of spare batteries

maybe if you are planning on working on battery power for long periods but they aren’t cheap though….

TBH I’d get an MP3 player though for the car. The temptation to fiddle with the settings whilst driving will be too much and laptops are more distracting IMO..

I have a Dell, complete with exploding battery (which is hardly a problem – fill in form on website, get sent new battery, send back old battery in SAE, all free of charge).
It’s an Inspiron 6000 (fairly all round model). Very pleased with it so far. Not the lightest, but fairly powerful for a laptop.
My parent’s Toshiba breaks every month or so. But I think that’s probably more to do with them than the actual machine.

checkout http://www.ebuyer.com clearance section for bargains [people who are too stupid to own a PC and read the manual sending them back :groucho::groucho::groucho:]

ours is an acer which we got for 2/3 of the normal cost and at the time it was top of the range….:love::love:

A mate had a laptop an after a while the battery when down. Would put it on charge for a few hours, it would be full apparently. 20 mins later… dead!

Just an idea thats all. Also dont use it on your lap to much. The heat given off can actually be a cause of testicular cancer!

thats because the charging circuit design is badly designed and eventually “cooked” the battery. It can happen with all sorts of portable electronic equipment with secondary (rechargeable) batteries, for a variety of reasons to do with how the batteries are charged.

The batteries have a limited life anyway so often second-hand equipment suffers from this problem.

I would class it as bad design but many manufacturers tolerate it as users often just replace the battery and its more money for the manufacturers…

I have often been down the road of wanting to get a laptop and then not bothering as there is to many to choose from,

one thing you guys maybe be able to help me with what is the difference between a laptop and a notepad, as notepads are cheaper they best suit my budget i only want to use it for internet access would one do the job

If you are talking about a PC or Mac type machine with a keyboard (and not a PDA which you write on with a stylus), physical size is the only difference other than technical specifications.

Notepads is a term sometimes used for smaller machines intended to be carried about more often than larger laptops. TBH I have not heard the term used for a while.

NB: All portable equipment is heavier than you think especially when you consider the weight of batteries and power supply units that must accompany them.

ive got an inspiron too, only had it three months but it has stood up to some severe usage (taken to parties, being left on to render cgi for days at a time, live video editing and generally being stretched to the limit) and stood the test admirably. so far. but i know people whove had em for a while and swear by them, which is basically why i got it, as well as it being the cheapest for the spec i needed.

Acer are my current favourite… High spec, reliable, not bank busting, and they even survive an Acidfairy pouring a pint of vodka and coke into them:crazy::crazy::crazy:….Had to clean it out obviously (after turning off swiftly), but it survived intact and still running perfectly. Battery does a good 3hrs too if you’re not playing CS:S.
