  • If you buy a laptop with a wireless card already installed does that mean you can literally connect to the web anywhere or do you still have to plug sumthing into the phoneline?

stil need to have something to plug into the phone unless you can poach a neighbour’s connection:groucho:

There’s a few free hotspots being set up in major cities, so you can sometimes get a connection. Subscription services are in most cities and towns somewhere now…Doesn’t mean they connect anywhere though (places in edinburgh for instance where you can’t get a connection to anything – probably due to the tall thick walled buildings edinburgh has.

Best way to find out anywhere is to turn on the wireless and scan for networks. You can usually sign up for a subscription using the wireless on any that are there (just try connecting – if it turns out to be a neighbours unsecured connection, then you got lucky…be polite and don’t thrash it though, and if it’s totally unsecured and you can access an internal network it would probably be nice if you let them know…:weee::weee::weee:).

If you get a laptop, get it with wireless though (it doesn’t really add to the price much, and can be damn useful. Also means you don’t have to get a PCMCIA card if you want it in future – you can swap cards easily, but having to do it can be a pain if you have other cards and not enough slots for all.).

The phoneline has nothing to do with wireless – confusion probably comes from satellite connections (many of which require a seperate upstream).

Acer are my current favourite… High spec, reliable, not bank busting, and they even survive an Acidfairy pouring a pint of vodka and coke into them:crazy::crazy::crazy:….Had to clean it out obviously (after turning off swiftly), but it survived intact and still running perfectly. Battery does a good 3hrs too if you’re not playing CS:S.

Oops.. least i had quick enough reactions to tilt it the minute i dropped the drink and so got most of the liquid out…. :crazy_diz

    more laptops being recalled

    Toshiba recalls 340,000 batteries

Toshiba is to replace about 340,000 laptop computer batteries worldwide, the third recall of faulty batteries made by Sony since mid-August. The batteries, used in Toshiba’s Dynabook and Dynabook Satellite laptops made between March and May of this year, could lose all their power.
However, unlike Dell and Apple last month, Toshiba said there was no risk of the faulty batteries catching fire.
Toshiba said the recall would not affect its earnings.
    ‘Rare cases’
A Toshiba spokesman declined to estimate the cost of the move, and would not say whether Toshiba was asking Sony to foot the bill.
Toshiba said the batteries would die “only in rare cases”.
Last month, Dell recalled four million laptop batteries made by Sony, and Apple recalled 1.8 million, after both said there was an over-heating and fire risk.
Dell said it knew of six instances since December when the batteries overheated or caught fire.
Sony has predicted that the recall of its Dell and Apple batteries will cost it between 20bn and 30bn yen ($172m to $258m).

On the subject of wireless connections,In the cities there was a practise called “war Chalking” if Ive remembered correctly. But anyway it involved scanning for wireless hotspots and then chalking a kind of double d symbol on a nearby surface to let people know there was an unsecured wireless connection available.Dont know if it still goes on though.

Yup… doesn’t really go on any more. Technically, connecting to someones unsecured wireless and borrowing it is considered hacking these days, and can result in some fairly serious charges. Bit of a bummer if you just have the wireless on your portable set to auto connect available networks (which it is by default), and you end up connecting to someones badly set up system…:hopeless::hopeless::hopeless:

IMO if you have an unsecured wireless, then having a few people use your connection to surf the web and causing you to notice (and therefore do something about it) is a lot better than having one unscrupulous git discover your network, and mine it for personal data/use it for nefarious purposes… Trouble is, the law scares off the first kind of hacking, while the second isn’t going to take any notice of the fact it’s illegal, and now has free rein…:you_crazy:you_crazy:you_crazy

Still lots of unsecured networks about (I’m in Spain at the mo’ – just connected to a local unsecured network to see if I could, and it was plenty accessible if you know what to do… )

Another case of the law making no sense:hopeless::hopeless::hopeless:
