Firefighters said the crystal ball on the windowsill had refracted sunlight on to the curtains, starting the blaze. The woman returned to her home in Poole, Dorset, at 1400 BST to discover the fire.
Watch manager Dave Cooper, of Dorset Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The conditions were just right with a low, strong October sun.”
He added: “It was a most unusual incident.
“The glass ball had literally refracted the light and set fire to the curtains.
“The lady was understandably quite shocked and called us straight away and then stayed out of the house.
“She asked us to take away the offending article – which we did of course, so it wouldn’t upset her.”
Now if the crytal ball really worked she would have know this was going to happen :laugh_at:
opps!! :laugh_at:
I’ve head of this happening, years a go we used to have a ‘prism’ on our window sill and were told to move it ‘just in case!’
Those camp scotsmen who did interior design shows caught their house on fire because of a goldfish bowl filled with water (as you would expect it was full of drapes and other poncey tat), the drapes caught alight as the sun rose and shone through the bowl.
the whole house would have gone up were it not for a pet kitten which mewed and woke up their housekeeper!
the kitten got an official bravery medal from the Scottish Executive and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, and a feeding bowl with the brigades shield engraved on it….(I think it did quite well out of this as the Scots govt initially thought it was a dog so it got a big dog-sized bowl :laugh_at:)
