  • As well as getting a side of bacon (basically half a pig) they are triumphantly carried through the village by people dressed as yokels. This has been going on for years..

Happy couples take home the bacon
Four couples have been victorious in convincing a jury of strangers that their marriages were not on the rocks.
The Dunmow Flitch Trials were held in Great Dunmow, Essex, on Saturday and take place every leap year.
The couples need to convince the jury they have never wished themselves not to be married to their partner.
The winners were Michael and Janet Denny, Jeff Dotts and Erin Albers, Graeme Fearon and Amanda Horner and Des Raynor and his agony aunt wife Claire.
The winning couples received a prize of a side of bacon.
The jury is made up of “six maids and six bachelors” and the couples on trial must have been married for at least a year and day.
Graeme Wade, who is on the organising committee, said: “It’s great that such a unique tradition is kept alive every four years.”
“The Dunmow Flitch Trials are talked about around the globe and it’s a bit of history for everyone associated with Great Dunmow to be proud of.”
