- *edit* [old news] WARNING (not) NEW VIRUS Anti-virus firms are warning about a Windows worm called Sober that is starting to spread widely online. The virus emerged at the weekend and is multiplying because so many versions of Windows are vulnerable. Many people are thought to be falling victim to it because one version poses as an update from anti-virus firms. It also tries to hide by using many different subject lines in both German and English and by changing the name of the payload holding the virus. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3220887.stm

- Virus! i seem to have this virus on my computer, whcih must have been hidden in some file i d/l off of emule, i think its probably karma for not paying for music for a while. the virus is... win32/puce.D any idea how to get rid? as AVG doesnt seem to be playing the game at the moment. cheers.

The scrambled text images come from sites which use them to stop computers automatically signing up for accounts that can be put to illegal use. By getting people to type in the text the spammers can take over the accounts and use them to send junk mail. The scrambled text systems used to defeat automatic sign-ups are known as Captchas or "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart". - Antivirus and firewalls At the moment Im using the AVG free virus check and my router has a firewall. But now Im ready to start my E.bay business and Im looking for some serious virus software and firewall software as I will be using my new credit card (Yeah I manged to get paypal, I hope) After some google work Im looking at the Panda virus check and the zone alarm firewall. I was just wondering what you use and if you have any advice ?

- virus warning nothing to worry about at our end at the mo, but a couple of links to virus' have been posted on SJ :yakk: so beware if you're not sure about a user who has posted a link, you can check it is what it says it is before you click on it right click on the link, then select properties. this willshow you what that actual link is (what you see onscreen initially may not be what it appears)

- virus links on SJ Angel's reported people posting links to viruses on SJ. I think it would be helpful if someone warns our members to be careful and we keep an eye out for them here as well...

- Viruses and trojans right. i caught a trojan horse virus last week, which shat me up, but i locked it away in the vault before the whole virus loaded, i think. it put itself in the java program but i got it out and locked it down. now i have another normal virus in the java program file, but my virus scanner (avg free edition) wont delete, heal, or lock away any of the files. its my mums computer and its been running peer to peer software namely emule, and i cant workout if she has a firewall. ive always got my programmer mate to secure my computer, but my mum knows less about computers that i do about the moleculare makeup of jupiter. nothing. im not even sure if i should be on the net with an infected computer, this is the first time anythings happened that i couldnt deal. please help.

- Virus warning for motor vehicles – could lead to a real system *crash*! Of course most of us can't at the moment afford a Lexus or any vehicle with that level of in-car tech, but even smaller and less costly cars have on-board computers nowadays like any technology this will "trickle down" to the lower ends of the market as the years go on. IMO its very worrying if it is not stopped soon - just imagine a couple of chav cruisers who (perhaps not realising the potential consequences) used a "script kiddie kit" of software nto nobble a rival, and it caused a car to malfunction and crash into a crowd of people :( Antivirus companies are researching reports that computer viruses have attacked the onboard computers of cars. Kaspersky Labs was contacted last weekend by a user asking how to disinfect the onboard computers of several Lexus cars -- the LX470, LS430 and Landcruiser 100. The user said that the infection occurred via a mobile phone. Some mobile phone viruses already exist, such as Cabir and Skulls which spread by Bluetooth and infect handsets based on the Symbian operating system. Many Lexus cars include a navigation system that can connect to a mobile phone over Bluetooth to allow hands-free calls, and Kaspersky believes that Bluetooth could be used to transmit a virus to a car's GPS navigation system. However, it is unclear which operating system Lexus uses for its navigation system. The company had not responded for requests for comment at the time of writing. "We know that car manufacturers are integrating existing operating systems into their onboard computers -- take the Fiat and Microsoft deal, for instance," said Eugene Kaspersky, head of antivirus research at Kaspersky Labs. "If infected mobile devices are scary, just think about an infected onboard computer." David Emm, senior technology consultant for Kaspersky Labs, said it was plausible that mobile phones could infect cars. "It's certainly a possibility, but at this stage it seems theoretical," said Emm. "The question is whether [onboard computers] have been subjected to attacks from [devices running the] Symbian operating system. I suspect that this will be done with a handset." Kaspersky is still researching the reports. Until two-way wireless transmissions were banned in races, Formula 1 racing cars were equipped with antivirus software to prevent virus attacks on the car's operating system.
