  • right. i caught a trojan horse virus last week, which shat me up, but i locked it away in the vault before the whole virus loaded, i think. it put itself in the java program but i got it out and locked it down. now i have another normal virus in the java program file, but my virus scanner (avg free edition) wont delete, heal, or lock away any of the files. its my mums computer and its been running peer to peer software namely emule, and i cant workout if she has a firewall. ive always got my programmer mate to secure my computer, but my mum knows less about computers that i do about the moleculare makeup of jupiter. nothing.

im not even sure if i should be on the net with an infected computer, this is the first time anythings happened that i couldnt deal. please help.

reet. so it was java/byte verify virus, which is apparently a flaw with java, the gallery and chat application, which this computer should have downloaded and update to fix. but it didn’t. and i cant work out why.

not only that, i still dont know if i have a firewall, i’ve never installed or set one up before.

I’ve used AVG in the past and it’s not perfect in my experience. I installed on my dad’s laptop but it didn’t manage to stop a whole number of nasties. Anyway I personally recommend Symantec Antivirus Corporate (not other consumer rubbish) and Spybot which seems to work well…

you could try zone alarm free firewall (download from net) for the computer; its not too bad

spybot search and destroy and Adaware are essential for happy computers.

we use free avg and its not too bad; which virus is it do you know?

    as the bois have siad

try spybot search and destroy to identify the virus

then start your PC in safe mode and delete the offending files… many virus files will jump about your hard disk…

also, once you have identified the name of the trojan, google it. have a pen and paper handy, and a calm tempremant. you will be able to find step by step instructions for getting rid of any known virus

Which version of IE and windows are you running?

I’d recommend a windows update as another bit of housekeeping….
