  • really appreciate any help on this matter..

so the truth is i have always enjoyed a good drink ever since i was a young n ( i even remember me old man giving me sips of his pint of guiness when i was as young as 6  .. pretty sure me mum would have been on the piss alot when i was in the womb too .. )

though i am not trying to pass the blame, this could be one of the underlying reasons i have such a taste for the old juice.

basically i am unsure as to whether i have an actual drink prob or not. recently i have been drinking more than usual, and my thirst for the booze, has risen considerably!..

i have been drinking every night since early december last year (not nesserely enuff to be pissed every night, but drinking none the less) and now feel strange having my first night ‘sober’. i am not experiencing the ‘shakes’ as such but i do feel uncomfortable and very thirsty and dry mouthed, i have been drinking water by the pint load and it isnt helping this, i need something stronger..

obviously i googled the symptoms of being an alcoholic first but now i want any body with any 1st hand experience with drink problems to share some info on alcohol withdrawl if you can. cheers

oh, and no advising me to go and see the bloody doctor:laugh_at:

I have questioned my self many times to weather I have a drinking problem. I used to drink 4/7 days when I was a little younger and never really gave it much thought. But I could of stopped when I wanted to. As I have got slightly older I have noticed that one I start I can not stop.

This is a good way to gauge if you have a problem. As in once you have a drink you can not stop, until you are drooling mess. I can live without drink happily, if I don’t start in the first place.

Do you occasionally drink heavily after a disappointment, a quarrel, or when the boss gives you a hard time?
When you have trouble or feel under pressure, do you always drink more heavily than usual?
Have you noticed that you are able to handle more liquor than you did when you were first drinking?
Did you ever wake up on the “morning after” and discover that you could not remember part of the evening before, even though your friends tell you that you did not “pass out”?
When drinking with other people, do you try to have a few extra drinks when others will not know it?
Are there certain occasions when you feel uncomfortable if alcohol is not available?
Have you recently noticed that when you begin drinking you are in a more of a hurry to get the first drink than you used to be?
Do you sometimes feel a little guilty about your drinking?
Are you secretly irritated when your family or friends discuss your drinking?
Have you recently noticed an increase in the frequency of your memory “blackouts”?
Do you often find that you wish to continue drinking after your friends say they have had enough?
Do you usually have a reason for the occasions when you drink heavily?
When you are sober, do you often regret things you have done or said while drinking?
Have you tried switching brands or following different plans for controlling your drinking?
Have you often failed to keep the promises you have made to yourself about controlling or cutting down on your drinking?
Have you ever tried to control your drinking by making a change in jobs, or moving to a new location?
Do you try to avoid family or close friends while you are drinking?
Are you having an increasing number of financial and work problems?
Do more people seem to be treating you unfairly without good reason?
Do you eat very little or irregularly when you are drinking?
Do you sometimes have the “shakes” in the morning and find that it helps to have a little drink?
Have you recently noticed that you cannot drink as much as you once did?
Do you sometimes stay drunk for several days at a time?
Do you sometimes feel very depressed and wonder whether life is worth living?
Sometimes after periods of drinking, do you see or hear things that aren’t there?
Do you get terribly frightened after you have been drinking heavily?

If the answer is “yes” to any of the questions, possible symptoms of alcoholism are indicated. “Yes” answers to several questions indicate the following states of alcoholism:

    Questions 1-8 — Early Stage

    Questions 9-21 — Middle Stage

Questions 22-26 — Beginning of final Stage

(Just realised this questionnaire is pretty lame. This is a result of Alcohol)

you have mentioned once you start drinking you find it difficult to stop untill your drunk. round here we call that being a seshoner. not nessesseraly a drink problem in my book as long as its not happening everyday/night.

have you encountered any withdrawl type symptoms before?

maybe i am just coming down with a bug. i don’t feel right tonight. it just so happens this is my first night without so much as a sip for like 6 weeks.. been putting two and two togetherraaa

I think I may have when I used to drink a lot. Not in an alcoholic sense, but definite withdrawals. It is like a feeling of emptiness and in a way numbness. I got/can get very restless and not content with whatever I am doing and I mean whatever. Hard to explain really.

Well it’s gone 1 o clock here and i have still not had anything alcoholic to drink tonight. i plan on sleeping soon as got work in the morning but it will be strange trying to drop off without the aid of booze in my system. looking forward to waking up without a hangover though :).

Must add, Ketamine has also been a drug i have long been doing too much of and have recently knocked on the head, the twitchy uncomfortable feelings i ave been gettin could well be down to that.

Good to hear JamZandwich . Just stick to it. The demons still come out in my sleep after a heavy drinking session. Sleep paralysis is a bastard.

i’ll reply to this when i’m not at work mate .. <3

I’v had problems with the drink and using it to cope for quite a few years, probably like you partly learnt from parental behaviour. Never been physically addicted, which it sounds like you arnt.

Theres lots of info kicking around on the net about giving up addictions but its largely about replacing it with a different life style and changing the situations you put urself in.

I believe on average it takes 10 years to develop a fully blown drinking problem so probably best to sort it out before things get worse.

Local addiction services could help if you find you cant give up but seems way too early for that, but perhaps some counciling if you are unhappy with ur life couldn’t hurt.

With me I replaced drinking with reading more and stuff, but as I guess you leave the house you could replace it with sport or all sorts of things. I think the key is to not just sit in the house, as you would normally (assuming u drink at home), but just trying to do it soba rather than with a drink. Gotta get out and keep buisy.

Sorry I cant be much more helpful not too sure what to say. Best of luck.

Depends on how long it goes on for I would say, I can somethimes drink most nights of the week. Or I can go weeks with out one… all depends with me, got in from work and had a beer tonight. That was the first I have had a drink on a week day for a few weeks…

    Alcohol is bad 🙁

i was having this argument with my mum a while ago when i was telling her i had a drink problem .. she was like .. you’re not an alchaholic because you don’t psysicaly need it … and i had to try and explain that there are two types of addiction … physical and mental … i’ve been drinking alot for about 7-8 years now .. it’s got considerable better and i’m down to 1-2 days a week max (fri/sat) like normal people drink .. alltho i probably drink alot more than they would of a weekend .. i have a tollerance.
You’re asking if you have a drinking problem .. and the answer is yes … if u even have to ask that question .. you most likely have a slight drinking problem at least … the think with alchahol is it’s so easy to get hold of … socialy exceptable and creeps up on you .. i didn’t realise i had a drinking problem till after maby 2-3 years of me drinking alot when it started to get in the way of friendships and relationships with family. alltho i was psycalogicaly addicted b4 the 2-3 years … this is when i was at my worst … mby drinknig about a ltr of voddy a day for some periods … i could go with out .. but i had a strong want for it … i woulodn’t say i was totaly physicaly dependant on it .. but my hangovers were more like withdrawrals and went on for 2 days (some times couldn’t get out of bed for them two days) .. when i actualy started to try and sought this out .. about 6 years into my drinking i gradualy forced my self to drink less and less
i tryed to quit out right and lasted a mounth and a half .. but then drank again … and thought fuck it .. and went to drinking weekends only ,… then back to every day after a few weeks … wasn’t till early last year after a major insident i n my life had passed that i made a propper go of it … and even tho again after the month of not drinking i went back to weeekend drinking i have and will never go back to every day drinking again!
what you need to do mate is space it out .. condition your self to not drink at certain times … i have found it’s more the habit of doing it than not doing it that’s the problem .. if you can say to your self .. i’ll try and quit for as long as i can … then if you not sucseed .. then that’s fine don’t beat your self up about it .. just use it aas a benchmark for what you can achive … say u quit for a week .. and have a drink for a few days … put a day or two a week aside for not drinking .. like say mondays and wednesdays … then stick to it .. and then work on it from there … mby cut out another day a few weeks in.. sun ..
it’s allso good to have something to take you mind off of it .. something relaxing pref and interesting that will make you feel good about your self after you done it .. swimming mby (just off the top of my head) and do theese on the days you do not drink .. then gradualy replace drinknig with constructive stuff.

if u need any more advise or help mate feel free to drop me a pm i’d be more than happy to help you out/give support and advise.

peace .. hope all goes well

Cheers for all your input so far Folks.
Since i last wrote, Things Aint gone quite as planned, Infact they’ve gotton considerably worse!..

4-5 pints after work, then a bottle of wine to myself when i arrive home at night has become a daily routine. ive been skipping days off work recently cos of my hangovers, and tbh, i sometimes wake up feeling like i couldnt care less wether i miss work or not so, end up sleeping all day instead. it sickens me.

its a vicous cycle ive gotton myself into here, and i fully intend on getting out of it soon!.. I get home from work and the first thing on my mind is to have a quick livener. I mean, Fuck it! Why not? Ive had a long hard day, I deserve it.. Right?..

i know im much better off without a drink yet i still keep doing it to myself.

i know these thoughts and behaviours are un acceptable and i plan on drinking only at weekends from now on, before i turn into a drunk..

My work mates and my Boss all know i drink too often, they didnt even have to ask.. im very sure i will loose my job soon if i dont change my atittude. i really can not afford to loose this job.

any body experienced any psychical withdrawl symptoms from alcohol before? any advice on how to change? surely just one drink a day should be ok? please share help if you can. cheers
