Parents are being asked to stay alert after a batch of potentially fatal prescription drugs shaped like lollipops were stolen.

Officers are particularly concerned in case the drugs, stolen from a house on Salisbury Street, Southport, end up in the hands of children.

Twenty-one Fentanyl lozenge lollipops, an opiate-based pain killer, and five Amatriptylene tablets were taken.

Anyone who finds the drugs is asked to take them to a police station.
Fentanyl is a drug used in the management of chronic or severe pain associated with some cancers and as part of terminal care.

“All of the drugs could prove fatal if taken by a child and could have serious consequences if taken by an adult,” a Merseyside Police spokeswoman said.

Agreed, though to start with I thought the whole thing sounded so ridiculous it must have been an april fools stunt.

yea maybe, but fentanyl is pretty damned dangerous. who knows…. if its an ap[ril fools its pretty distasteful.

Dont really think its april fools now, just a bloody ridiculous idea on the part of whoever was responsible for dangerous lolly shaped drugs

        They look like this

        lolipop.jpg

berry-flavored lozenge on a stick that looks and tastes like a lollipop.

does seem risky but OTOH they are very rarely prescribed other than in terminal illness, and I think many people in that state of health would often have a carer looking after the meds and/or be very unlikely to have small children running about the house.

Thus if the medicines were kept safely in a high cupboard (as they always should be) the risk to kids is fairly minimal.

TBH I think the house was probably robbed by addicts who knew what they were looking for.

        what GL says.

Also just so u know Fentanyl fantastic stuff (for pain) but no good for messing with.

This stuff not for playin, it 80x stronger than morphine and had most of the ‘nice’ side effects of morphine designed out of it in the labs so best left for the palliative care patients 😉

A derivative of fentanyl is also the same stuff Russian (i.e neo-Soviet) special forces used in gas form to re-take the cinema that got jacked by the Chechen guerilla fighters in 2002 (this was an even stronger form designed by KGB in the 1970s).

They used so much of it it poisoned a lot of the hostages (particularly the children) as well as their bodies were stressed and run down from lack of food..

Fentanyl derivates (particularly immobilon) are also used by vets for euthanasia of small and large animals and probably would be indicated if/when human euthanasia is permitted.

Nasty stuff, definitely best avoided if you want to stay alive..

I do believe it was made stronger by attaching a carbon/sulphur molecule to the fentanyl molecule and this caused it to become many many times stronger…….I think! Im not a chemist but I wish I was:groucho:
