There’s a cat that keeps coming into my house and nicking my two kitties food. At first i didn’t like it but now am starting to feel sorry for the little bugger as it’s (Don’t know the sex) really old and looks like it needs a good home!
Only thing is it well doesn’t trust me, as me and this cat have had an ongoing battle these past two years!
My two cats don’t seem to mind it either so now i’m coming round to the idea of befriending it and looking after it in it’s old age, seems like a decent thing to do cos there’s no getting rid of it other than shooting it and i really don’t wanna do that!
I know theres a few catlovers on here, so if any of you have any tips on how to befriend this cat i’d appreciate it!
put a piece of ham on your porch … and one every three feet (exactly!) until you get to a ‘safe room’ in this room youll have more ham
it cant fail …
only problem …
and there is one …
once its been eaten they leave so count every moment together precious
sorry dude … couldnt resist …
seriously, try and get closer, stay closer to the ground so you dont seem much of a threat and see how close you can get. dont outstretch your hand until it approaches if you go for it it may take it as being attacked. if its been mistreated before its propably the first thing itll jump and scram at.
give it a go π
tiptop milk, they love it
we are also trying to do similar / build up trust with what looks like a stray we have named Oscar, he’s (or she’s) coming closer each day –
we’ve not fed it just in case it does actually belong to someone as I wouldnt want to steal someones cat, but it keeps coming back to us everyday …..
Yeah cheers DA, i have a crack at that, It’s actually outside now, I just put some food out while and it watched me do it. Might do this a few times and hopefully it’ll realise that i no longer wish death upon it! π
Raj (who has tamed two hybrid Scottish wildcats, a feat many zoologists claim is impossible) wrote a complete guide to this on the forum somewhere, but I’ve searched around and can’t find it..
Id say aim towards stroking It.
Few things though. Keep yourself low, so crouch, they seem to feel less intimidated. Put your arm out straight away, not when It gets closer, to avoid it thinking you’re going to attack It. Rub your finger and thumb together, they always get inquisitive of that… Making clicking and puckering/kissing noises lol. Honestly, seems to work for some reason.
Let its head go to your hand and touch it almost before your try and stroke it dont give it full on strokes either, it might feel intimidated again.
Failing that, entise It in the same way, but try and play with it, using a piece of string. No cat can reisist string. Try and make It appear as though its gonna disappear around a door way edge or something.
Maybe even have a cat biscuit in your fingers for when it gets close!
Repeat this for a few weeks and see what happens π
Oh and Im not a weird cat person lol, we’ve just had cats for my whole life so Ive learnt alot about them, that’s all π
