  • i’ve got some super whizzy computer friends who all rave about ubuntu.. i’ve used it a few times on a college laptop and i think its really easy to use and it looks nice. although, if something is aesthetically pleasing then i’m pretty much sold 🙂

just tired of windows it sucks in my opinion slow, registry always packed up and a plus side all is free, the only problem i had with college was that they where fussy on what operating system I use >:( which is why i failed course because i don’t use windows and use different font. You get crappy spyware etc and linux is secure and good, In process of downloading it now..

no updates packing up your pc and boots in less than 20 second flat, I have no idea why education system waste there time and money with windows, I even asked the school why they cutting lessons and teachers when they could make the money spent elsewhere when using linux, but instead they rather use windows xp with they have to buy a copy for every pc.

yeah, colleges are stupid about operating systems.. the ones in the labs have ubuntu on them though. the rest have xp. my college is supposedly a computer specialism college BUT.. the network is always down, printers don’t work, so many problems. i don’t know what the techies do all day, it would be good to actually have a working computer occasionally.

i do actually like windows (never used a mac), but i’ve ran into so many problems with it.

Do you know how easy it is to set this up to duel boot? Got XP at the moment but wouldnt mind having this as well.

If it can be done I’d imagin all you would do was make a partision or install it onto a seperate hard disk … but i’ve never tried it … alltho that’s what you do with more then one version of windows. With windows it does matter what order you install the OS’s tho.

i’ve got 2 friends who are running windows (not sure which version) with ubuntu.. one said that it caused problems with the bootloader though? cos ubuntu stopped them from running windows.. might wanna google it 🙂

Just installed ubuntu i’m running on it now and what i can tell you is get off microsoft fast, my fan noise is down by 95% and it’s damn fast, ubuntu is like iphone there’s an app for that, I did have dual but i fought not dealing with windows task manager and things going on that i didn’t no, so now i am ubuntu convert and it’s going well..

I’ve installed it on older machines and use Linux (various distros, usually Centos, Debian and OpenSUSE) for servers at work but unfortunately most of my desktop machines are Windows as I work from home and too many of our core business systems are built around Microsoft based platforms. Unfortunately the suppliers don’t seem to want to use open source components, some have strategic links with Microsoft…

That said, a while back one of the company directors wanted to investigate moving our desktops to Linux – ironically we couldn’t do it as one critical application is accessed via Windows Terminal Server via a TS gateway at the remote end and the current version of rdesktop for Linux doesn’t support this 😥

Computers are cheap enough that if you want to experiment with Linux I’d suggest putting together an entire machine for this purpose, as Linux is way more efficient and can make use of older hardware. The only real issues I’ve heard of are lack of driver support for some specialist music equipment

Auch wenn du am Abgrund stehst, und gar nichts mehr verstehst,
wachen Engel über dich, halten dich im Licht und lassen dich nie fallen.

Drivers are a problem on Linux, still… They are getting much better, and unless you’re using really new, or very specialist stuff you /should/ be ok. Last problem I had was with a webcam, but that was a while ago.

Ubuntu is a great OS though, not used it on the desktop for a few years (mac user here) but I run about 11 servers on the LTS versions. Always be prepared for it to break a few times at first, coming from Windows its a totally different kettle of fish.

If you do set it up, always make a new partition for your /home, then you can reinstall the OS as many times as you like, or try other Linux based OSs, without losing your user profile.

There’s also Get Kubuntu | Kubuntu, some people prefer KDE for their desktop.

Running virtual machines on Ubtuntu, PFsense (freebsd) and Knoppix in VMware and VirtualPC.

Ubuntu as a homeserver to download and extract from usenet with Sabnzbplus and send the files to a Windows share on a different server.

I have to use PFsense to configure a firewall for school. PFsense is a linux firewall distribution built on FreeBSD.

Knoppix just for playing around in a virtual machine.

Because I don’t have enough experience with Linux I keep it in virtual machines. My dedicated homeserver is running on Windows xp so I can use it as a mediacenter as well.
It runs 2 disks in a JBOD, together they make 3.5TB. VMware workstation makes it possible to run one or more virtual machines on this machine.

My education is Microsoft orientated, active directory management in Server 2008.
    Unfortunately.

The simple fact is microsoft have monopolised the os market so most companies etc are stuck with them. I know linux etc etc are supposed to be faster, more secure….in one word BETTER than windows.

Ive used windows all my life and tbh there isnt a problem i cannot sort out with it.

Now they have their monopoly, they arent going to let go easily and have most companies tied into using their os, sad but true
