Installing security software is an option but you still never know when and where it is safe to get it. These AV`s are all free and good. I prefer AVG, been using it for 3 years with no problem.

Agreed with Fader here, Spybot does what it says on the tin.
Search, Destroy + Immunize.

Works a charm 🙂

spybot is just for spyware. Not virus’s/trojans. AVG/Avast + spybot is sufficient.

Most of the commercial anti-virus progarms are pretty competent and will protect you from most malware, not just viruses.

Of course the very best way to avoid spyware, viruses, and hacker attacks in the first place is to be cautious! Carefully choose which websites you visit, don’t click links in email or instant messages, and don’t install any software without researching it first. If you keep these guidelines in mind, you’ll be on the right track to keeping your personal computer and your data safe!
