  • Hello Party People,

Wonder could you help me please? A very good friend of mine (ok, my lovely brother) is applying to quit UK and get a visa to Australia. Having spent loads of money going through the long, drawn-out emmigration process, he is nearing the end, with a medical in a few days’ time.

My brother has been a (think it’d be called habitual) cannabis user for the last twenty years and never really touched anything else, not even alcohol. He’s now having last minute paranoia (bless!) that the urine test part of the medical would show any cannabis in his system (which I believe remains for up to six weeks, according to usage etc.) and maybe affect his application.

My question to the expert panel: Is there any way of somehow blocking cannabis for a urine test? Any substance or trickery that would be useful? Any super-quick way of detoxing over a few days? Sure, Ive read of something but need concrete and useful information for him right now.

Also, would be pleased to hear from anyone with any knowledge of these medicals. IE Am pretty sure that a medically-controlled addiction might be something this sort of medical would check for, but a cannabis habit? Not sure.

Would be well grateful for any useful info I could pass on to him. He damn deserves to go and have a new life; would be proper gutted for him to fail a medical on such flimsy grounds.

Thank you muchly in advance. If anyone has any information, I’m pretty sure I’d find it here. x 😉

have no idea if they will be checking for cannabis, an for habitual use it can be 3 months – as it deposits in the fat cells or summat

but if they are – there is no way of getting out the system quicker,

he could drink lots and lots of water – therefore handing in a very dilute specimen and it may then be below levels for detection – but they may become suspicious if it looks like water and not urine

as it is easy to tell the difference if to people used to doing urine tests = and if it isnt just a dip stick one – the clinical lab will record ‘dilute specimen’ on the result slip

there are different ‘dip stick’ tests and not all have cannabis on them – but again if goes to a lab – it’ll prob test for everything – has he done a thorough google search to find out what they are testing for? as they may not bother with cannabis but class A’s etc, bearing in mind how many people use cannabis?

cant be arsed to read it but links may be useful:

    yahoo answer to your question:

“i just took the test and the Dr told me that the only narcotics they are looking for is cocaine and heroin…”

    hope he gets his dream

just a thought.. is there no other reason why thc (is that what they test for in urine?) could be there? like, something else could cause it to be in the blood?
or maybe something else (like tank girl’s idea with water) that could make it less traceable? a stronger chemical or something?

just a suggestion, don’t know if it’s any use but good luck 🙂

Not allowed in AUS cos weed in system, never heard that.

I know a few people who’ve emigrated, all of them pretty heavy smokers and they had no problems. I don’t reckon they’d test for weed, maybe harder drugs, but I think they’re looking for serious problems/diseases.

Might actually be worth calling the High Commission and asking – I’m sure whatever they’re testing for isn’t a secret.

    nope

Oh Tank Girly; have heard speak of your wisdom, and you have filled me with good vibes. Yeah, he’s on the drinking lots of water tip. Good pointer about dilution; let’s be honest: any medical lab nowadays ain’t no mouse-fart operation. They could probably tell when you last went to a football match, but: is that what they’re looking for? Good hope here.

Thank you so much Sweetie. So glad you’re here. x

Bloody good points going on here, harr!et! Something snagging in my brain about Olympic athletes and cover-ups! Night-nurse? (good try, but no cigar I suspect). But my brother’s a clever dude and may be able to concoct a reasonable alternative. (If he ain’t too paranoid, now he’s detoxing, lol, (a bit).)

Again, you make me proud to be bloody chatting to you. And thanks for the added ‘good luck’. Like a lot of us, he hasn’t had loads of it. x

from what I read of the immigration form they are only looking for evidence of problematic drug use, i.e mental health problems caused by excessive use of cannabis, or physical health problems caused by injecting other drugs/poor and unhealthy lifestyles.

AU don’t want to let someone in their country who is simply going to be a burden on their public health system, or is a potential drug dealer which is “fair dinkum” IMO.

If your brother doesn’t have any of these problems, its highly unlikely they will refuse him.

Good ideas. He rang an alternative doctor on the medical list and made an enquiry. They reckoned they’d never been asked such a question(!) Yeah, right. But their response was similar to others: Never heard of anyone being refused for smoking weed..

Great key news: ‘a few people who’ve emigrated’. He knows one person, and that was some years ago. So..I reckon this is gonna make him feel so much better! :bounce_g: I think (and hope) so too (about serious problems). He’s off, he’s off…I can feel it.

Thank you PF. You’re a star in my day. x

Absolutely General L. As we (me and him) discussed. Oh, you’ve made me feel so much better. A good shot of communal common-sense, fairly stated, is a pretty potent input. And I am truly bloody grateful. x

    ah bless you

they are fantastic in the labs (I guess I shouldnt really be in awe of them but I am )
they can differentiate between different types of opiates & benzo’s etc, monitor levels when it should be coming down or at a stable level and if it spikes, indicating usage, and always indicate if it is dilute, they also will advise if it is just under cut off, and by how much etc

from what I saw it looks as if he’ll be ok, coz they basically looking for heroin or coke – so make sure no pain killers with coeidene in too – as using the dip sticks they come up as opiates, and only the lab can differentiate
