  • Nearly 200 prisoners and former inmates forced to stop taking drugs by going “cold turkey” are to receive payments. The unspecified settlement followed claims the practice amounted to assault and a breach of human rights.

The claimants had been using heroin and other opiates and were understood to have been receiving alternative treatment before going to prison.

    The full story

    yikes :hopeless:

i think the more it is accepted that prisoners are human beings with real human rights the better. i think it is obvious that putting someone through an enforced psycholgical distress, while they are simultaneously trying to assimilate to a prison environment which isnt easy on its own, is akin to torture or assault.

but really the issue goes much deeper than this. our prison system is fucked. 30,000 inmates, right now are being kept in local police stations as a “temporary measure” until the new year. this is plainly ridiculous. even the police arent happy having to become part time jailors as well as everything else.

we need to stop using prisons as societies dustbin and stand up to the problems that the society we are responsible for creates.

pity its not going to happen, eh? might require politicians to actually do some work.

I wonder what percentage are drug related offences for possesion? and how many for dealing?

I think its about time they stood up for their rights. ALTHOUGH A £250,000 PAYMENT IS A BIT EXCESSIVE! eNFORCED COLD TURKEY MUST BE HELL, i CAME CLOSE TO BEING BANGED UP A FEW TIME WHEN i WAS USING. Not all prisons even prescribe methadone!!

    (sorry about the caps)

I think its £250,000 split across however many prisoners there were. Assuming around 200 prisoners thats £1250 each….

Even the harsh Eastern countries don’t put people through this (many even appear to be covertly reducing their use of the death penalty and putting people through rehab instead, I expect they have realised they are culling too many of their youth!)

IMO I don’t think any non violent offenders (other than those who commit house burglaries or extreme motoring offences that could lead to serious crashes) should be in prison in the first place…

around 80% of the prison population have dyslexia

around 80% have mental hetal issues

around 60 % are disgnosed with ADD (many more are likely undiagnosed)

prison is where we put people that society has failed, in many cases. which is pretty sick when you think about it

    :frown:

where do those statistics come from glo?

i’m a volunteer mentor to men leaving prison who are not ‘on license’

it was part of my training. will have to check the actual source.

    Thank you Glo
