  • for a country with a strong drinking culture to do this it must be a real emergency – but thats a lot of people dead :crazy_diz

they still have their beer though….

The Czech government has banned the sale of all spirits containing more than 20% alcohol following a spate of poisoning that has left 19 people dead.

The ban covers all outlets including restaurants and hotels.
The poisonings have been blamed on bootleg vodka and rum tainted with the industrial chemical methanol and sold cheaply at markets and outdoor kiosks.
Czech police have arrested 10 people and seized 5,000 litres of spirits, as well as counterfeit labels.
Health Minister Leos Heger said the unprecedented ban was effective immediately and applied nationwide.

Shiiiiiiit dude, that’s nuts. Like u said, at least they’ve still got their beer!

Surely the answer to that is crack down on where dodgy methanol spirits come from? And not just a blanket ban on mostly safe legitimate spirits. My friends out there are joining many in celebrating the ‘ban’ with a spirits only weekend :weee:

In our country the spirits producers comply to EU rules, our drink is “mostly safe”, and even with taxes booze is affordable to most of us.

This isn’t always the case in mainland Europe during a bitter economic depression where folk are desperate for money. CZ have already got a load of feds looking for the stuff but if its found its way into the mainstream shops (which it must have for something like that to happen) its a serious situation. No European country is going to stop sales of a legal product they get taxes on unless some major incident has genuinely made that product unsafe..

Undoubtedly mate, the rule of supply and demand is too great to ignore unless it’s deemed to be in the interests of the general populace to do so. It happens everywhere to be fair, I think there was a garage / lock up in Oldham or somewhere last year that blew up whilst a gang were inside making some counterfeit vodka. Once it’s got the requisite labels on it, most people would believe it to be the real deal – and that’s where the problems start. If it’s cheap, there’s probably a reason for it!

It was Lincolnshire where the illegal vodka factory blew up (along with the Lithuanian chaps inside it).

The explosion around Oldham (or nearby) was a pie factory, there was nothing illegal about the factory but a gas oven was badly maintained. The fireman talking to the telly reporters (with the pie factory slowly burning behind him) was a big hard chap but genuinely looked like he would burst into tears any moment. Sadly one man was killed in the pie factory blast (I reckon he must have got a heros funeral like soldiers get) – but the company transferred the remaining staff to a entire standby factory to avoid a second emergency of the North being short of pies.

That would be hell on earth mate – the great Northern pie shortage! It’d be remembered for years to come as a warning, passed down from generation to generation like a folk tale!
