BBC News – SAS man Nigel Ely hopes for Saddam Hussein statue deal
Scenes of jubilation as the towering statue was pulled down were shown around the world on 9 April, 2003, and symbolised the end of Saddam’s 24-year reign.
Crowds severed the head of the fallen effigy, while around the capital other statues and pictures of the former leader were torn down.
Nigel Ely, 53, a former paratrooper who served in the 1990-91 Gulf War, was in Baghdad’s Firdous Square, the day after the incident where the statue was “surrounded by tanks”.
…
Working as a photojournalist, he introduced himself as an ex-soldier to US marines guarding the relic and asked if he could take a piece of it.
“They said ‘Yea, buddy” and I hacked off a piece with the help of the US marines,” he said.
Using a sledgehammer and chisel, Mr Ely worked through the thick bronze, ending up with a 2ft (0.6m) chunk of statue depicting the ex-leader’s buttock.
It’s worth a bit as scrap, but I can’t help thinking there’s a few well heeled people who would like to mount it. 🙂
Or posssibly gift it to Iran as a goodwill gesture.
He should be charged with looting and bringing the proud name of the SAS into disrepute
I don’t think a bit of looting would rank too highly on a list of the questionable activities the SAS get up to.

Wasn’t active on service at time of incident. Would not count anyway. 🙂
I had indeed thought Pat had decided to set up a stall selling donkey burgers, and was somewhat dissapointed to find this was not the case.

Sadly the local market is already sewn up… will post a pic if their stall is still open…
First pic is the stall… sadly no Donkey today, the guy did recommend I check Tesco’s as apparently they offer a similar product.
The other pic is a local Community Volunteer Gamewarden, basically they chase and shoot at rich people to keep them fit and cull the weaker specimens.
I don’t know much about saddam Hussein, but I’m more than see has made Iraq worse of than what it was, I should probably look into what he was like as a leader, but thought I’d just say there is a video of the toppling of that statue with a huge crowd of cheering Iraqis, where in a matter of fact there was only a few, and the rest edited in.
Bloody USA making them look so innocent, if you saw Iraq now, I wonder if people would’ve supported Americas RAID/LOOT. Syria, in the process, Iran and North Korea are next to be destroyed. I don’t blame n. Korea for loading their nukes up, they are being threatened and wouldn’t blame them if ww3 happens because America invade them.
