A lot more bears in EU than I thought there were! I remmeber some Romanian colleagues who moved to a house in Mid Suffolk and were frightened initially to go to the woods, we had to reassure them that there are no wild bears in UK..

They are a few in norway as well but most of the scandinavian bear population is living in sweden due less people living out side rural centers…I’ve been trying to look them up but the are illusive and not easy to have a look at even more so with wolves….and I understand them well, cause a human encounter often ends up with them both being shot. 🙁

No bears, just the occasional maiden stealing maidens.
That was a good day, those mushrooms I found in the forest weren’t half-bad either.

There are plenty living in the mountains of the Polish/Slovak/Belarus borders. There’s a world famous forest with an unspellable/unpronouncable name that has World Heritage status. It’s remained untouched for thousands of years, so is now europes only piece of ancient woodland. ’tis a breathtaking place.

European bears are quite a common subject for many photographers – a few of have won prestigious awards. There’s hides set up all over the place these days specifically for bears – I’ve got a trip to Hungary planned to do just that (amongst other wildlife).

this site is still active but links have been moved around; bears tend to get left alone in Eastern Europe as they are viewed as a lesser evil than pissed off young men discharging firearms n the woods (especially in countries where there has quite recently been some sort of war or they are still having one).
