  • Whats the best over-the-counter drug for anxiety? Ive got prescribed valium and its starting to not do much and getting some next depressed feelings.
    Help anyone?

If your meds aren’t working then maybe your doctor could move you onto an SSRI antidepressant (from my experience, Citalopram is very good for anxiety as well as depression). If you’re under 18 (are you?) the doc might be reluctant to give you them though.

Yeah im under age. But ive got quite a freindly doctor, one of those easy going ones you can talk out your lifes problems and shit. Im just wondering if theres anything over the counter? its much easier to get as i dont want to go to the doctor for checkups and crap. Ive also heard LSD is quite good for figuring yourself out and getting over problems like anxiety? Thanks alot for the reply btw cheese.

St John’s wort is supposed to be good for depression. You can buy at Holland & Barratt. Not sure how good it is for treating anxiety, but depression and anxiety are often inter-related and tend to feed each-other, so it might be of some use.

Will look into it brotha, much apriciated 🙂

Edit: Just realized one of the effects of St John’s Wort is Appetite Surpression… realy dont need to get skinnier bro haha also another side effect may be worse anxiety, also something im not willing to risk.

If you are ‘too young’ for anti depressants (or anti depressants that are also licensed for anxiety ) I would seriously question a GP who is prescribing valium, as it is seriously addictive and only masks / helps anxiety symptoms in the short term, and can lead to addictive (psychologically and physically) behaaviour

there is some self help info here,

if you are serious about looking at the base line about why you are anxious (making sure its not just coz you are using substances / alcohol – as the positives can sometimes outweigh the negatives for some of us) these may be helpful – but you have to put a bit of effort in to it – medication is wonderful (stuff like propanolol etc) but they do not help you face what is really making you anxious

(I used to have very bad panic attacks etc so I can empathise to some degree)

(st johns wort is meant to be very effective but you also have to look at whether you are on the pill etc – you dont say if you are female or male so I thought it worth mentioning, and with side effects – as with anything they have to mention EVERY single reported side effect – and if you are looking at using LSD – are you really that conserned about side effects? as have you heard of some the side effects of LSD? would that put you off etc – you need to really think about stuff at all levels)

Wise words Tank Girl, so you dont think meds will make it go away? Only masks it?
Il take a look through the links, apriciate the help.
And im male so i dont realy have to worry about anything like that,
i dint know LSD had serius side effects… will research on it later however.
    Thanks again 🙂

I’m not saying prescribed meds are necessarily better than ‘illegal’ meds…… my partners mum was only telling me about the ‘LSD ward’ in the psychiatric hopsital she worked in in the 60s last week – and I have read alot about it personally but I was just trying to prove a point about side effect ;P

I am a true believer in medication and for a lot of people it is really helpful – as for some people it is enough – but if you want to really look at the underlying problems or causes ‘talking therapy or self help’ should be beneficial and the evidence shows it is atleast equal to medication but you have to put the work in to it and not just ‘take a pill each day’

but vallium will not solve your problems in the long term! this is a medication that is a muscle relaxant / tranquilizer (used to be known as ‘mother little helper’ and just left loads of women strung out on medication but … quiet) and will only mask it – it is a totally different medication to anti depressants or anti anxiety meds – and as with anything you put in your body – I’d suggest you do your research

esp as some people prefer paracetamol, asprin or ibruprofen – so everyone is an individual and certain meds suit some and others suit others

LSD isn’t gonna solve anxiety problems for you. Not saying it can’t but it seems like you want people to talk you into doing LSD to help make you not scared?

Personally i found in life good company and age and acceptance helped me get away for my anxiety youth. I did suffer from anxiety at 18 and the thought of using Diazepam to help it sounds so stupid… not only is Diazepam bad for you and a crap aid to long term solve anxiety (it’d make it a lot worse, Diazepam (Valium) is a short term cure) it also makes you stupid.

Have you tried a good diet, exercise and a loving partner/friend group?

Yeah im trying to look into the entire ‘natural’ thing now, and ive got alot of mates i just dont realy interact much with them so to speak?
Dint know a good diet could help tough or exercise.

Some GP’s are actually prescribing ‘gym on prescription’ as the benefits are good for depression etc I think you get 3 months membership or something like that

It helps increase motivation, makes you feel good (endorphins) and get fitter, and hopefully increase social network and confidence in new experiences if you wanna break it down to this. But even walking or jogging which is free can be helpful too

And a healthy diet – I think it is what it is – if you are eating shite / fast food / prepared food – they have huge ammounts of sugar and salt and preservatives in them, that just arnt good for us and can make us feel sluggish, plenty of fruit and veg and good meat if you can afford it –
check out other threads on here as there are plenty of members with better knowledge about food than me on here and even how to make your own food on a budget
