  • I’ve been busy at work installing a new patient care system (uses touch screen computers for care rounds). Now the hardware is working well I am keeping an eye on the software.

This stores medication details as well so its not surprising to find stuff like this

and although stimulants are not normally prescribed to the elderly there is plenty of the last two (and the lyrics to the track below aren’t unlike the goings on in any the place during the afternoon)- not sure if its like that everywhere in Europe, I think the Dutch retirement homes are more chilled out though thats probably because they can get all the drugs they want, listen to the pirate radio and if the patients decide they have had enough they can get euthanasia (incidentally NL and BE still have the biggest and best elderly care facilities in Europe)…

Hard to get any amphets prescribed in UK except dexamphet for narcolepsy Don’t think you want to be giving phet to someone with bad hips or a zimmerframe.you are right about the Netherlands though, more laid back about almost everything.Seem to prescribe oral morphine hydrochloride a lot here but use diamorph for childbirth pain relief.UK doesn’t want anyone even the elderly having a good time

I’ve only known of two adults with legit scripts for dexamfetamine (1 x narcolepsy, another with adult ADHD); its been restricted since the 1970s…

The old folk in residential homes here don’t actually get any less drugs than those elsewhere in Northern Europe; they do not pose a particularly great diversion risk as they cannot usually get too far without walking frames etc and there are perimiter alarms.

The reason they have a better quality of life in NL is that when small villages get to the point that 60% of the population are seniors, they declare the whole area a “retirement village”,set up a base with a mini hospital/day centre/residential home and fill it with nurses, doctors etc (if they can’t get enough locals they are recruited from PH/ID and similar countries, and their rooms are way bigger than UK homes and have more open space for the patients to chill out in.

these retirement villages you speak of have me fantasizing of emigrating to the NL.

opioids, prescribe them more than they need and they can OD and die in peace.

diamorphine is the trade name of heroin and that’s what GL is mentioning in the first post.
