And no I didn’t get the ruler on my knuckles for that, I knew better than to defile a proper exercise book (which would have resulted in such punishment, until it was banned a year later).
Bear in mind Dad let me watch violent action films with him, read books about guns (back then it was not wrong for a young boy to be interested in guns) and I had already written my summer holiday news essay about the Troubles and the bombs and all sorts and got 10/10 for it (nun said “that was grand, you will grow up to be a smart lad”). Yet I grew up without getting involved in violence other than a last resort. For all the faults of faith-based education (and to be fair I never encountered any nonces in Catholic education, only had to evade one in a Protestant prep school I later went to) they weren’t excessively PC – if I’d done that in a secular or C of E junior school even then my parents would have got referred to Social Services..
