someone else mentioned (Vicky I think) evening classes. there have been some big changes in govt funding for adult education, basically spelling the end for evening classes…

adult learning will be either through work (NVQ etc) or university from next year. colleges won’t be able to offer the traditional adult evening classes; they won’t be able to get the funding to do so

Most FE colleges are affiliated to universities, nearly all of them offer some a degree or equivalent through the local uni. I don’t think evening classes will stop, there will just be another layer of bureaucracy.
I am not sure if yurt making courses will be covered though, that said a case could be made for cultural inclusion……..

I myself flip between being stressed and enjoying work. Most of the time its ok. I am doing a PhD in industry, which is both challenging and interesting. I also have a couple of other jobs one to add interest and cash! I get bored easily work saves me from it. I tend to think of being bored as a crime…..

absolutely, i’d be well up for reading that, im sure others would too – stick some up! partyvibe’s what we make of it.

in that case, i’ll try to figure out how to get things that are currently in books on to this website. I’m sure with my incredible computer skills that will be really easy 😉
and thanks for the interest – i’ll keep you posted….

you need a scanner and Optical Character Recognition software, which hopefully should be relatively easy to use on the mac.

I read lots of sites about old telecoms equipment where the original info (circuit diagrams, instructions) was on paper and has been scanned into text form this way. The software is quite good at recognising the characters if you set it up right…

Yes, we use character recognition software at work. Comes bundled with a lot of scanners anyway I think. Works perfectly although doesn’t edit the text in any way, so you might have to insert paragraphs afterwards if you want to make it easily readable <<is that a word?

as soon as i read “character recognition software” i knew this would be beyond me! i have an old scanner collecting dust somewhere but i don’t even know how to use that. so i figure that if i’m going to do this i’ll have to try to find some on-line sources….
or type out an article, paragraph by paragraph (they’re pretty lengthy) – but as my typing sucks too, that could take some time

i wish i wasn’t so lame with technology – but everything i try to do goes horribly wrong – and stresses me out – and leaves me feeling stupid – and incompetent – and old 🙁

Like I say. Some scanners have it already built in. If you can work a scanner then try scanning it but using the ‘output type’ as ‘text’.

‘character recognition software’ is a name for a computer programme that picks out letters and numbers from a page you scan, rather than it all appearing like a picture… this is useful if you want to make some changes to a page, but only have it on paper and don’t want to have to produce the whole thing from scratch

couldn’t vicky just scan it in and post it up as an image?

The abbreviation OCR is often used… Vicky – if you speak to the librarians at your uni hopefully at least one of them will know what this is all about – and maybe even be able to help with software or resources (then again maybe its changed now and you have to pay for all this in uni 🙁 )

you could upload scanned images but an A4 sheet at 300 dpi (a minimum decent resolution for scanning) can take up a fair bit of space (up to 1MB)
and if you compress stuff it knackers any attempt to OCR it later

and you can’t quote from it

I would expect a uni would have at least one OCR unit somewhere on campus… as a researcher don’t you have access to this stuff?

i seriously doubt that my scanner has this software already on it – it’s about 10 years old – eeek – it really has collected a lot of dust!

not sure about the copyright situation either mind you – anyone know?

i’ll have to do a little investigating – I only travel to uni one day a week and so my time is usually spent running around collecting texts, going to meetings etc.
with these kinds of things, you never tend to look into them until you need to do something –
so, i’ll get some motivation together and go ask for some help!!

and lets hope they won’t charge me for it 🙂

the copyright depends on the author. Be careful though that sometimes if you work for a uni or similar place they can gain the rights of anything you produce using their resources depending on the employment contract

as for the software you might be in luck though, I’ve seen OCR software bundled with scanners of that age.

im one of the minority job-lovers 😀 I work as a barmaid, and a waitress at the theatre royal in norwich and i love it!! I get on really well with my colleagues, and most of them tend to be quite young 🙂 I love bar work cos it’s sociable, but the theatres SO MUCH BETTER as it’s more sociable hours and i can go out after with no worries WOO! haha!

Most ppl tell me that my job must be very rewarding as I work as a support worker in a day-care centre for people who have acquired brain injuries, but to be honest, I’m doing this for now but am also looking for another job. There is a job I’ve recently applyed for and If I do get it, I’ll be leaving my current job. My cleints are really nice people though, I may miss em when I’m gone.

Usually I enjoy my job very much,
get to meet some great (and some not so great) people from all walks of life,
get to offer them help and they then decide if they want it

As previously mentioned by others its the politics or management that tend to cause most of the problems!

I also love working shufts, although I moan about nights, I happy to do them just get very bored on them, as I like working and keeping busy

I dont think I am organised enough to work mon – fri 9- 5 and get everything done I need to on a saturday…. the ‘knowing’ where I am and ability to party more would be nice though…
