Footage has emerged of the troubled songstress Amy Winehouse apparently smoking crack at her home in east London. The substance is widely regarded as the “down-and-out” drug. “Crack is whack,” as Whitney Houston once put it. But is it growing in popularity?

Home Office figures show that 28% of drug expenditure in 2003-04 (the most recent statistics) was on crack, compared with 23% for heroin, 20% on cannabis and 18% on powdered cocaine. It is generally bought on the street in small quantities – rocks cost about £10 each.

Crack is a smokable form of cocaine (cocaine hydrochloride), made through a process called “freebasing”, which began in America in the early 1970s, initially as a method used by dealers to test purity. “The euphoric effects are so powerful,” says Gary Sutton of the Relate drugs service, “but what goes up must come down. It’s an incredibly seductive drug. People become dependent on it very easily.” Users may also rely on alcohol, cannabis or Valium to deal with the comedown. Most dealers now sell speedballers, heroin and crack, because the heroin softens the crash.

“Two or three years ago, crack had a stigma that it’s beginning to lose now,” adds Sutton. “Coke was regarded as an aspirational drug, crack was seen as a loser’s drug. That has shifted, but I don’t think it has become an aspirational drug, because I don’t think it has shed its seamy image.”

“The market has changed a lot now,” says Sutton’s colleague Colin Stewart.

“You have a lot of teenagers aged 14-20 dealing, who don’t use it but who sell it to fund their lifestyle. The worrying thing is that the crack that’s around at the moment isn’t very pure. It was 80% and now it’s 50%. People end up in massive debt – £500 a day is common and kids will do anything for a £10 rock.”

dont go near it, it fucks ya and you end up a violent pcycho even years after, i had anger problems for about 3-4 years after coming off. not just that the cravings are something else people actualy take smack to come down off it.

yeah i hate crack .. done it a few times .. not nice at all .. for what you get off it the come down is well not worth it

sadly it is growing in popularity, especially amongst younger people round here

people come up all the way from East London to Essex and Suffolk to sell rocks as theres enough of a demand

what is worse is the youths who once would have set up a positive squat or a rave crew are now running a crackhouse/dealing network instead, as it pays better and makes them look harder (until they get stabbed/shot/arrested)

and because of this the cops feel justified in harsher clampdowns and society supports them in doing so :hopeless:

It does seem to have got more popular, a good amount of my mates have at least tried it a few bit more regularily, cant say its somthing i’d wanna do often at all though really

thats coz of the media atention of amy crackhouse and peat doughtey n that lot.. beleve it or not kids want to be like them..

people who try to be like celebretys are mugs, why even want to be rich, every rich person i know is a stuck up twat, id rather not tbh if i can have more fun getting by without money whos had the better life?

exactly, and the media don’t care as they get a story either way, when the clampdowns come they are seen as the “good guys” for “exposing the problem”

    true unfortunately :you_crazy

For me Crack would as popular as having a sledgehammer actually up ones crack so therefore not very popular.
Crack is a mugs game and if you do it you’re a mug, no more no less!

Tried it a few times and its not really that great….

It does seem to be popular with a lot of people now for some reason, I know enough people who do it…

a good friend of mine once told me this about crack

no-one needs to get that high

i’ve not tried it, know those who have and there’s never been a pretty ending

Nah theres no need to do crack/heroin anyone who starts on it is a fucking loser and ain’t worthy of ya time!

crack is becoming more popular where I live and work,

and a lot of people are getting themselves a nice little smack habit too –

to cope with the come down….. :hopeless:

If they get hold of decent coke around here they all seem to get all excited (I don’t blame them), but then they run off and turn it into crack :you_crazy
