is an amazing book by this bloke mayer hillman that everyone should read as soon as possible.
its primarily about how serious and global the threat of global warming is, and how we can best prevent self imposed armaggedon on our own species by making small and easy changes to our lives.
its wicked. proper scientific analysis without being patronising or appearing contrived,m coupled with a real passion and urgency that you rarely come across in scientists, make it an easy and enlightening read.
i like to think of myself as fairly clued up about the state of the worlds decline, but this book had loads of suprises for me, most of them quite unpleasant.
its so good, its kept me up to five in the morning reading it, when i have stuff to do in 3 hours, and also hauled me out of bed to big it up on the net…
i’ll prolly fill this thread up with bits and quotes from it as i re read it, as some of the arguements he puts across are quality.
these details will help people trace the book (I’m not giving Amazon a link though as I do not approve of their corporate policies) – buy it from an independent bookstore (if you can find one!) but not Waterstones..
Product Details
incidentally USE has inadvertantly omitted the name of the female co-author Tina FAWCETT (more details below)
Why not Waterstone’s?
there was a long-standing employee fired for something he said about his job on his own weblog
they are fascist booksellers :you_smart
i think that’s what GL was getting at
??
also, they tried to get rid of their philosophy section- and did for a few months, untill pressure saw them re-instate it. i dunno, getting the lions share of a market, then defacating on said market seems a bit bin-like to me…
…plus, people who run their own bookshops are well weird and interesting, and worth giving money to, unlike the faceless book-hating bastards at waterstones.
lalalala! my i do love to raaaaaant!!
hardly suprised, if waterstones sack all their decent staff!
I was in there once some years ago (before this blog débacle), and was looking at some books on cycling in the transport section.
Another chap in front of me picked up a book; and the whole fucking lot of shelves gave way. Loads of books hit the deck…
Amongst them were
“Kursk: Russia’s worst submarine disaster”
“Sinking of the Titanic”
“Worlds Worst Rail Crashes, 1800-2002”
and other similar titles and theme, all about accidents, crashes and othe calamities….
we just burst out laughing and quickly left the store :biggreen:
