  • I currently work in my family owned chippy. This inevitably results in the occasional experimentation of deep frying various foods that weren’t designed to be battered and consumed outside of Scotland.

With today’s creation I believe I’ve surpassed myself. For lunch I made a fried egg and bacon baguette (with brown sauce of course) before battering and deep frying, mmmm best tasting potential cardiac arrest ever!

Then for tea I’ve just had a battered half pound cheese burger with relish and onion and a battered Starbar. Both meals served with a Dr Pepper.

Thankfully I rarely eat so unhealthly but when I do I do it properly! I love my job and unnaturally high metabolism.

can you get the real Northern pies? the ones what have proper meat in them and not cat food?

Do you guys stick your frozen pizza into the deep fryer over there? Very common here.. Leave it to thaw a little, fold it in half like a pita, and then dip it in, Holy shit it’s nice but that can’t be consumed too often if you give a crap about your heart and/or thighs!

You took a lovely, innocent, delicious tasting bacon and egg baguette and then not only defiled it with brown sauce, but you then had the temerity to batter and deep-fry it? You evil, evil bastard!

Unfortunately we sell Hollands pies which aren’t the greatest but they are our customers preference. We recently sampled some new sausages too with a much higher meat content but again the punters preferred the typical ‘chippy’ sausage which has around 20% less meat.

Just goes to show really how brainwashed everybody is towards food. People generally opt for the food they expect and not necessarily the better tasting or quality, they rarely approve of change.

Can you make a cheese, bacon & mash potato fritter ?

I can make anything I want out of hours. Just can’t do it often because banging loads of random foods in the fryer can fuck up the oil.

THAts so weird bc YOu guys are doing that over there…IVe never heard of deep frying frozen pizza… ANd AMERICA IS REALLY OVER FAT (over fat..instead of overweight bc they were overweight 2 years ago and now.. they are just over fat) HERE…. Its probably becasue i got this pizza box and it had over 5000 calories,,,,, IT took 3 to eat it and half is still there… I have heard a couple of stories where one person finishes the whole thing…..(its two medium pizzas 6 bread stix chicken alfrado for up to four ppeople.)

Ah yeah the issue with America is portion sizes though lol, we’re deep frying everything in Scotland but the portions are probably tiny compared to american portions.

British food’s great as long as you use the right ingredients man, it’s more the British psyche that’s a disgrace I’d say.

Not really, junk food is obviously bad for you the but thats the same the world over, it’s just we & the yanks consume far to much of it

BUT we have some great food, think of the traditional Sunday dinner, or the full cooked breaky…. lovely stuff

Hmm i disagree Mezz, the reason being because i haven’t tasted anything like the fruits and salads and vegetables like Australia, here they taste so disappointing.. including ‘organic’.
Believe it or not even salad, ie lettuce, cucumber, Peppers(Capsicum) carrot, beetroots, are supposed to be bursting with flavour and i seriously mean BURSTING! And you actually craave to eat it! The same goes for fruits too apples, pears etc.. I tried every brand of healthy foods in the first year that i’d been living here and nothing compared, also in englamnd and wales as i moved around a fair bit.
Also, without wanting it to turn in to a long rant, the chips tatse so much better back home, which is due to the potatoes, in fact jacket potatoes were also scrumptious, here i found them bland…
Yous may or may not? be thinking that to you they taste good.. but if you could have the real thing in front of you, you would notice the extreme difference for sure.

I love fruit…. get through loads of apples, banana’s, clementines, grapes, strawberry’s etc…….. but it almost all gets imported from all around the world so is not even from the UK.

On the veggies, a lot more is native to the UK, but overpopulation has lead to mass production, chemicals & preservatives, and over farmed land, and this is spreading worldwide, Ausie veg even if it’s better now will soon be the same, only the hardiest, fastest growing varieties will survive even if they do have less taste.

There is plenty of good food and recipes here in the UK, both from traditional native cuisine and and more recent multicultural influences. the bigger problem is changes in society. Eating is generally a family/community/tribal activity in mammals and primates (even cats in a household who jealously guard their individual territories often eat together) but changes in modern Britain have reduced the importance of community and family especially in big city areas – also time pressures mean that folk have less time to eat, let alone cook (hence fast food/horseburgers etc.) In smaller towns more influenced by rural culture with a slower pace of life there is still good food to be found.
