Meat-eaters “easily cheat, lie, forget promises and commit sex crimes”, according to a controversial school textbook available in India.
New Healthway, a book on hygiene and health aimed at 11 and 12 year-olds, is printed by one of India’s leading publishers.
Academics have urged the government to exercise greater control.
But the authorities say schools should monitor content as they are responsible for the choice of textbooks.
“This is poisonous for children,” Janaki Rajan of the Faculty of Education at Jamia Millia University in Delhi told the BBC.
“The government has the power to take action, but they are washing their hands of it,” she said.
It is not known which Indian schools have bought the book for their students, but correspondents say what is worrying is that such a book is available to students.
“The strongest argument that meat is not essential food is the fact that the Creator of this Universe did not include meat in the original diet for Adam and Eve. He gave them fruits, nuts and vegetables,” reads a chapter entitled Do We Need Flesh Food?
The chapter details the “benefits” of a vegetarian diet and goes on to list “some of the characteristics” found among non-vegetarians.
“They easily cheat, tell lies, forget promises, they are dishonest and tell bad words, steal, fight and turn to violence and commit sex crimes,” it says.
The chapter, full of factual inaccuracies, refers to Eskimos (Inuit) as “lazy, sluggish and short-lived”, because they live on “a diet largely of meat”.
It adds: “The Arabs who helped in constructing the Suez Canal lived on wheat and dates and were superior to the beef-fed Englishmen engaged in the same work.”
The publishers, S Chand, did not respond to the BBC’s requests for a comment.

BBC News – India textbook says meat-eaters lie and commit sex crimes

So, do the bacon eaters want to get together and start a class representative action to sue the publishers arse off?

Ugh. If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s lies being published in textbooks. Especially in this day and age a lot of people will believe something if it’s in a book, with extra points if it’s a textbook. Things like this should definitely be disallowed. Then again, given that astrology is an official science there I can’t be entirely surprised. I feel sorry for the learned individuals who have to put up with that sort of thing there.

I would do, but I’ve got lies to tell and sex crimes to commit, sorry!

From the country that still has arranged marriages and sell their children for dowries and status

I believe I heard of a study several years that claimed to have proved that red meat eaters were more aggressive and competitive, not sure how accurate that was.

Bet you a tenner I can chin whoever made that study!

Well, there have been comparative studies on aggression between Caucasian and Chinese Americans (both groups had Christian upbringing).

The Caucasians were much more confrontational and tended to be more aggressive, although it was a tendency, not true of all individuals.

Would not make sense. The dowery is money presented with a bride (never a male). So you couldn’t sell children for a dowery.

You could (theoretically) sell a child into prostitution in Thailand and use the money to pay a dowery on another female child.

Indians tend to just strangle the extra female children. It’s going to lead to a lot more sex crimes, in my opinion. And for those who want to sue me – tough. Official statistics on births and child mortality in India show that little girls are being killed to avoid the “problem” of no dowery.

Thing is even if your religious upbringing is the same your cultural upbringing won’t be.

i saw a doc on eskimos and they looked quite active to me… maybe an entertaining doc would be ‘indian goes to live as an eskimo eating only veg’

Maybe they have a point. I eat meat every day and I lie, take illicit chemicals and am a sexual deviant!
