  • thinking of fucking off work and going either later this year or next, anyone been? whats it like etc, etc. Been told theres lots of psytrance, whoop! :weee:

like Malaysia with strong laws and a bit of Islamic fundamentalism, but a more corrupt government and it wasn’t that long ago it was a virtual dictatorship. In all parts of SE Asia there is now a risk of “anti-Western” feeling especially with the economic crisis.

I have been to Malaysia which is where my extended family live, virtually next door and has many common features (including a similar language) with Indonesia. They used to be all the same sort of country with similar cultures until British, Europeans and Japs carved up the nations and put in their arbitrary divisions.

in the current climate I would not go to any of these countries (including supposedly “safe” areas like Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore) unless and until you have made good and trustworthy friends who are citizens of that country or have friends out there. Unless you have very trustworthy native friends I would avoid the party scenes in these nations as they are seen as “moral cesspools” by those in power and you could get stitched up or worse. Westerners are going missing/getting fucked over left right and centre in these nations every week. At the very least some of the natives will befriend you but try and rob you or turn you in to the Police if you aren’t careful.

What might be a “good” scene can change within seconds if a local police commander gets told to “clean things up” (a bit like what has happened in East Anglia) or doesn’t get enough bribes, and they aren’t namby-pamby like British cops. If there is a party scene in one area its because the Islamic fundamentalists are kicking off elsewhere and so the cops can’t do two things at once. (A bit like “Londonistan” and the Met…)

have a look at the foreign news sites, but bear in mind news in Asia is censored to report “good news” and less crime reporting than the West, or they don’t want to admit raves happen (mind you British media did this in some areas). When a rave in an Asian nation does get turned over it makes the worst of British riot cops look like fluffy kittens.

and just because they seem to have become a bit more lax on natives taking drugs etc (probably because they don’t want to hang their entire rising generations) doesn’t mean the authorities are gonna tolerate foreigners doing it as much. also by going there you are probably putting money into the hands of the governments what invaded East Timor, Papua New Guinea etc and kill their indigenous peoples to provide your tourist areas.

you should go for a job at the indonesian tourist board with that write up! :hopeless:
the girl im going with knows some people out there, so hopefully we’ll be fine…

Could do the Malaysian one as there used to be bitter rivalry between the two nations (its not as bad now since the dictator Suharto retired)

there is a youth/rave/drugs culture in these nations in recent times (ironically its because Al-Quaeda have managed to keep the local feds very busy)

We’ve got Snowwolf in Malaysia posting here, the Indonesian psy trancers occasionally try to sell their hippy tat and download our mixes (and to be fair they have even subscribed) and of course Benbear lives in Thailand..

its a matter of keeping your wits about you and not avoiding “bad news” from international news sources (Al-Jazeera is a good place for less censored reports from SE Asia..)
