  • subtitled “Driver Training for Indians” but the road system is (supposed) to be the same standard in both IN and UK. Someone pointed out that one of the roundabouts he pictured is actually in Hounslow :laugh_at:

actually all of his videos appear to be shot in Hounslow, or the surrounding areas. His aim must be to use West London as a benchmark for safe driving standards amongst the native Indians (which gives some idea as to what it must be like in Indian cities  )

ahh Hounslow, a place i don’t miss. Actually quite a useful video, i never realised roundabouts worked like that. The hectic version i had in mind would’ve probably lead to constant pile ups though

Always be vigilant on roundabouts, they’ll give you the run around and pull be chasing ya tail.

There’s also a massive Indian community in Hounslow.. honestly i’d say atleast 60% was Indian (or at least from the Indian sub-continent)

yep I think thats why the doctor picked that particular area.. my mum’s side of the family is Tamil Indian (originally from South India but over the years they migrated to Malaysia).

Before Reading went more multicultural in the 1980s it was not uncommon to make a big family trip to Southall, Hounslow and similar areas simply to buy groceries / spices. but driving standards in that area back then weren’t much better than mainland India, its only comparatively recently the roads of Hounslow have been as peaceful and safe as that :laugh_at:

That doesn’t surprise me, i remember there being a massive market filled with all sorts of exotic plants/herbs etc. that i’d never even heard of lol. Although that is actually quite a distance to travel just for groceries.
Used to be able to get the best curry i’ve ever experienced in my life there though – was a proper small traditional place run by a family, even other Indian families would go there because it wasn’t a cheap crap takeaway, it was proper high quality and i expect is what they’d have cooked for themselves at home etc.

yes the best way to decide if an ethnic restaurant in Britain is any good is to check how many of that same ethnic group go there who are not related to the owners or their family or simply to show off..

Bear in mind this was a British Asian extended family so there were literally 3 cars and boxes full of stuff being purchased in bulk, shared across 3 main family groups. Petrol was far cheaper, and most British Asian families drove small family cars (often Japanese), so it worked out cheaper and less hassle than buying these things locally, as the stuff in the local shops came from TRS (T R Suterwalla and Sons) in Southall anyway.

Then Waitrose opened up in the 1980s and started selling “multicultural food” so our parents bought it all from there instead.

Coincidentally on my last few driving lessons I am always getting caught up in a big traffic queue in a double roundabout which was fine until they built a new Waitrose there (first one in Ipswich) and now it is solid with traffic (Waitrose are apparently funding a entire new road junction to deal with this)
