TBH its not so much a case of “nicking” the monkey (the cops pointed out themselves that it is not committing any offence) but making sure it is not actually someones family pet, and doesn’t cause hazards to others or itself, they don’t want it on the busy roads of getting run over by a underground train..
in modern Japan if it runs out of food or ends up in a unsuitable place it will at least get a place at Tokyo Zoo.. or someone may even take it in as a pet. There are far more formidable creatures in rural areas of Japan.
