Ketamine is the fastest growing drug on the dance scene, the chemical of choice for tens of thousands of clubbers.

But the class C drug, which is abused for its hallucinogenic effects, is now being hailed by scientists as a breakthrough treatment for severe depressives.

New research has found that patients who have failed to respond to more conventional drugs can be cured of depression within as little as two hours with an injection of ketamine. A study by the National Institute of Mental Health in Maryland found that in a third of cases the mood-lifting effects of the horse tranquilliser, known as Special K on the street, lasted at least a week.

This compares with prescription antidepressants that can take up to eight weeks to have any positive impact on patients who are hard to treat. Experts say that it could pave the way for a new class of faster and longer-acting medications.

Researchers believe that ketamine reduces depression-like symptoms in treatment of resistant people by blocking the protein or receptor in the brain that regulates mood, unlike antidepressants currently prescribed by doctors.

Ketamine is one of several banned drugs that have been found to have therapeutic benefits. Ecstasy has proved effective for traumatised servicemen who have fought in Iraq, and trials are also taking place involving rape victims who are given the drug to help them to recount their ordeals without triggering anxiety. Scientists have used LSD to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety.

Thats very interesting and I hope they do more research into it to establish dosage and long term side effects. Too many ‘party’ drugs have potential therapeutic uses which are being ignored by those trying to enforce their prohibition.

i suffer from bouts of depression every known again and have always founda night on K sorted me out… and i sware its a mood elevator when high also rather than a proper sedative thingy… love it… mmm K…. mmmm

sick, i need to get me sepressed.

I’m surprised they didn’t think of trying k as an anti depressant a while ago. K blatently takes the edge off things.!

I think it can work, as do other recreational drugs, but they just work by supressing your negative emotions and the bad memories or worries come back when you stop doing the drug…. thats the real side effect…

I’ve been shocked at how quickly some people change when the comedown sets in (and I am talking just a few hours after a party, not midweek), they often get quite angry, irritable and impulsive….

True true, i’ve got a mate who’s off home as soon as he hits the smallest hint of sobriety at any party cos his comedowns are so shitty! like not feeling shit physically, he jus thinks theres no point to anything and everythings completely terrible in his life. then give him a day and he’s out having it again thinking life is wonderful! i’ve had many an instance when i’ve had loadsa stuff to do which was causing me stress and after a line of k or some other substance i cant remeber wat all the fuss was and feel so much better. then of course sobriety hits in and the things i was meant to do havn’t been done and stress returns wearing a black suit of armour carrying a mace over its shoulder.. certainly wouldnt reccommend it!

All illegals have such potential in medicene, did anyone ever heard about the tests they did in the 60’s & 70’s where they found acid is an amazing cure for acholisim but they won’t allow treatment coz it can be fun

wat about mdma being used for weight loss! i swear they could have thought of something that made u lose weight without making you buzzed off ur tits and wondering why suddenly you have a deep undying love for everything in the world! :you_crazy

Yeah man MI5 used acid around the time of the of the second world in experiments with mind control and now they have to pay compensation to all the ex spies who are having acid flashbacks years on! If only babylon would do some real research into the thing they condem so much then illegals might be given the chance to actually help people.

MDMA was being studied and used to treat post traumatic stress [PTS]when they made it illegal – how useful would it be to have a drug to aid treatment of PTS? The applications are manifold.

amfetamine type drugs have been previously used for weight control and even at one point only classed OTC or P (pharmacy) sales!

they were made illegal because too many people suffered psychosis after bingeing on them and the NHS had to deal with the after effects, also a lot of sportspeople were takign them for performance enhancement and a few died.

A famous example of this was “Major” Tom Simpson, one of Britain’s best cyclists in the 1950s and 1960s. The way in which he died is very similar to the heatstroke reaction that sometimes claims Ecstasy users who get themselves overly dehydrated

I do think the UN anti-drugs laws (which dictate to the world that drugs must be illegal) need to be reconsidered but another problem with Britain is that people binge on everything.

Lets face it, drugs are so easily available in this country and the penalties for small posession relatively low (usually a caution) that they may as well be legal!

A big problem at the moment is the NHS havign to deal with adverse reactions and mental illness due to our countries binge culture, which causes an inevitable backlash from the right wing.

A relative of mine works in an Emergency Department and regularly gets (as well as the alcohol related problems) various people presenting to ED who have overdone their weekends party drugs.

Sometimes 5 or more in a weekend – mostly young, healthy people who would not have needed to be there had they self-regulated their intake.

OTOH people sometimes only buy or take less because they are worried about being nicked (not so much going to jail, but the hassles with work/family etc when you get done by the criminal justice system)

there is a big counter argument that if recreational use was legal, the emergency treatement facilities in this country could be swamped by a similar level of casualties to those caused by alcohol…

Yeah thats a well good point man. Moderation can be a real alien thought to some when apllying it to their drug intake. I know myself how easy it is to see how far you can push it but luckily i’ve never put myself in the position where a hospital visit is needed. I find K is particularly menacing in the way that i can work myself into a state where i think i;m fine until suddenly ur tumbling down the hole.. But yeh back to ur point i think the bingeing attitude that this nation has towards getting mashed would be a definate downfall in the legalisation of reacreational use
