  • A while back Buzz mentioned being off his head and going into some sort of restaurant, where some Asian chaps were apparently highly amused and remarking on the state of him in their native language.

This has made me think – when the Asians there are speaking to other people in Scotland – do they speak English or Scots, or both?

I think it depends on the person, and where they were brought up.

the drumclinic folk did tell me there are many different forms of Scots and people in Scotland sometimes can’t understand one another :laugh_at:

During the 1990s ITV London used to show crime documentaries from and they would subtitle hidden camera footage of Scottish criminals!

I’m sure there was this comedy programme on telly a few years back what centred around an Asian family with a corner shop in Glasgow or Edinburgh.. (one of the actors is a sort of famous comedian/writer but I have forgotten his name)

I think it depends which generation they’re from, I’ve heard some strong accents from asians in glasgow, ones which edinburger folks wouldn’t even understand 😉

i worked with a Glaswegian chinese bloke for a while, it was initially disconcerting to hear him talking broad scots especially since I lived there when I was young too 🙂

they normally speak their local dialect in my experience – it can be disconcerting to hear an asian come out in broad scots as its not always what you expect :weee:
